Here is a summary of today’s #COVID19AB update: In the last 24hrs, we ID’d 1,345 new cases & completed ≈ 13.1K tests. We have ID’d incl 816 VoC cases in the last 24hrs. Variants make up about 57% of active cases. Our positivity rate is 10.4%. (1/8)
There are active alerts/outbreaks in 567 schools which represents 23% of all schools in AB. I would like to remind all Albertans that it is important that we continue to follow all public health measures inside & outside the classroom. (2/8)
Hospitalizations continue to rise. 476 people are in hospital incl 105 in ICU. Sadly, 5 new deaths were reported in the last 24hrs. My condolences go to their loved ones & anyone who is grieving. Each death is a reminder of the continued importance of containing this virus. (3/8)
W/limited vaccine supply, the interval between 1st & 2nd doses is max 16 wks. Once we offer 1st doses to all ABs 16+ we will start 2nd doses. Pls do not try to book a 2nd dose yet. As more doses arrive we will look to shorten interval when possible, later in the year. (4/8)
In clinical trials, AZ showed better overall protection when the interval was longer, so the shortest interval we would use is 12wks. We are monitoring emerging evidence for 2nd doses for cancer patients & severely immunocompromised & will update ABs if any change is made. (5/8)
I received my 1st dose of AZ this morning. This vaccine is a good choice. Immunization is the best way to protect your health & the health of those around you. All 3 vaccines used in AB are safe & effective at preventing severe illness. (6/8)
Thanks to high vaccine uptake in LTC staff & residents 776 active cases on Dec. 30 have declined to 37 today. Hosps are down by 93% & deaths by 94%. That is the power of vaccines. That is why it is important we all get vaccinated as soon as we’re eligible. (7/8)
We need to bend the curve & drive cases down until vaccines offer widespread protection. Limit in-person interactions. Don’t gather indoors. Wear a mask. Stay home & get tested if unwell. We need to stick to these habits now to get through to a better summer. (8/8)

#YMM public & Catholic school boards have moved Grades 7-12 to online learning for 2 weeks to limit the spread of #COVID19AB. This is similar to a move announced by the #YYC Board of Education & #YYC Catholic School District last week. (1/4)
To complement this shift, indoor extra-curricular activities, youth sport, rec & performance activities will also either be paused or moved outdoors for these ages for the same time period in #YMM. This is similar to the approach taken w/#YYC public & Catholic last week. (2/4)
The most effective way of preventing transmission of COVID-19 & its variants in schools is to limit spread in our communities. Please continue to follow all public health guidance incl remaining 6 feet from ppl outside your household, wearing masks & not gathering indoors. (3/4)

Today, we announced a case of a rare blood clot disorder linked to the AZ vaccine. The patient was diagnosed, treated promptly and is recovering. Now that we know about this rare side effect we can watch for it and reduce the risk of serious harm or death even further. (1of5)
I understand some Albertans have concerns about the safety of this vaccine, so let me provide some additional context. This case is only the second in Canada. More than 700,000 doses of AstraZeneca or CovidSHIELD/AstraZeneca have been administered in Canada. (2of5)
The global rate of this blood clot disorder has been estimated at only one case in 100,000–250,000 doses of vaccine. In contrast, those age 55 and older who get COVID-19 have a one in 200 chance of dying. (3of5)
Here is a summary of today’s #COVID19AB numbers: Over the last 24 hours we have identified 1,616 new cases & completed about 16.9K tests. There are an additional 898 variant of concern cases. 53.5% of all active cases are variants & our positivity rate is 9.6%. (1/4)
There are 423 people in hospital, including 93 in ICU. I am pleased to say that no new deaths were reported to Alberta Health in the last 24 hours. While this is positive news, we must remain vigilant. (2/4)
Here is a summary of today’s #COVID19AB update: We have admin 1M+ doses of vaccine. Over the last 24hrs, we have ID’d 1,646 new cases & completed about 17.2K tests. Our + rate is 9.5%. We have ID’d 1,020 new VoC cases. Variants now represent 53.5% of our active cases. (1/11)

Here is a summary of today’s update: AB Seasonal influenza season has ended w/0 reported cases. Thank you for getting immunized & protecting each other from influenza, #COVID19AB & other respiratory illnesses. This success reminds us we can beat COVID if we work together. (1/7)
Over the last 24hrs, we have ID’d 1,081 new cases & completed about 12K tests. Our + rate is 8.9%. We ID’d 705 additional VoC cases in the last 24hrs. Variants currently represent about 52% % of our active cases. (2/7)
There are active alerts/outbreaks in 453 schools w/ 2,653 cases linked to schools since Jan 11. We are seeing a sharp rise in school-aged ABs & other age groups, often linked to social gatherings. This reinforces the importance of following measures before & after school. (3/7)
