This year the #Oscars significantly expanded its voting body, inviting more than 800 new members.

Based the 2021 nominations this seems to have made a real difference to diversity.

We have analysed 92 years of the winners in the main categories - here's how the stats add up 👇
Our analysis shows that Oscar-winning actresses are on average nine years younger than their male counterparts.

The average male winner is 46, the average female winner is 37
For every woman who has won an award for screenwriting, there are 12 male winners.

And in 92 years of Academy Awards winners there has only ever been one woman to win the award for best director – Kathryn Bigelow, for The Hurt Locker, in 2010
In all four acting categories, plus directing and screenwriting, only 40 people from ethnically diverse backgrounds have ever won an Oscar
It will be no surprise to hear that Oscar winners are overwhelmingly American.

Some 543 awards in the six categories analysed went to Americans, which is almost three-quarters (74%) of the total since 1929
