It was an emotional week as the country focused on a 10 mile stretch from Minneapolis to the suburb of Brooklyn Center Minnesota. First the conviction of Derek Chauvin in the death of George Floyd and then the funeral of Daunte Wright. #velshi

With the soul-stirring mix of events its certainly understandable if you missed Earth Day on Thursday. It’s a day that usually figures prominently in my life - but this week was displaced in the news cycle. #velshi
3/13
The conviction of Derek Chauvin was a reflection of a changing consciousness - something brought about, in part, by almost a year of constant protest. Protest & demonstration that included up to 26 million Americans. #velshi
4/13
Protest works. It changes things. It gave America Independence, it got women the right to vote, it achieved the Civil Rights Act & it led the country to understand that police brutality against Black People has to end. #velshi
5/13
Protest also got us Earth Day & widespread recognition that human activity causes environmental degradation & human activity can change that. #velshi
6/13
That understanding & desire to change the way we treated the planet was harnessed by Wisconsin Sen. Gaylord Nelson. Who, in 1969, worked to combine the energy of student anti-war protests with the public’s growing concerns about the environment. #velshi
7/13
Nelson looked to quote: “shake up the political establishment and force this issue onto the national agenda” and he did - on April 22, 1970 Earth Day was born when an estimated 20 million Americans took to the streets in protest. History was made that day. #velshi
8/13
History was made this Earth Day too as President Biden committed to cutting U.S. greenhouse-gas emissions roughly in half by 2030. It’s an ambitious plan focusing on renewable energy and significant cuts in emissions from fossil fuels. #velshi
9/13
The goal doubles the previous target and is something the last president not only didn’t do, but actually did the opposite of by removing America from a crucial leadership position in the fight for our planet. #velshi
10/13
The U.S. blocked meaningful climate discussion for 4 years. The last year has been about social justice, police brutality, voting rights, equality. #velshi
11/13
Acting like the Ever Given ship stuck in the Suez, the U.S. blocked meaningful climate discussion for four years. The last year has been about social justice. Police brutality, voting rights, equality. #velshi
12/13
Long after we have solved the issues that politics *can* solve - we will still have this big blue marble on which we all live. But it’ll be dirtier, hotter & will threaten our health & our ability to feed ourselves. We need to fight for it. #velshi
13/13
Guaranteeing everyone clean air, clean water and a livable planet is, also, social justice. And just like communities of color are getting the short end of the stick on policing and voting - so, too, are they bearing the brunt of environmental degradation. #velshi

In 1971 an unlikely pairing of a black community organizer and a member of the Ku Klux Klan were asked to co-chair a “charrette” - a 10-day meeting – to address school desegregation in Durham, North Carolina. #velshi
4/14
Ann Atwater and C.P. Ellis were that unlikely pairing, each chosen for the same reason - because their connection to the matter made them prominent and relevant voices for each side of the contentious issue. #velshi
5/14
Both were invested in the outcome, as both also had children in Durham schools. Ann Atwater was said to be a no-nonsense black activist who distrusted all white people and wouldn’t take “no” for an answer. C.P. Ellis was a leader in the local chapter of the Klan. #velshi

One thing many of us have learned in the last year is how productive we can be when we aren’t spending an hour or two commuting to and from work. The pandemic has made us efficient, if nothing else. #velshi
2/12
All this working from home didn’t break the internet so, with a laptop & a phone or 2, we sure get a lot done. In fact, even before Covid, the American worker was about as productive as we have ever been. #velshi

As business picks up & unemployment falls, all that productivity is going to be a problem. It’s an economic concept but it’s Sunday so I won’t give you equations and stuff. #velshi

53 years ago today Martin Luther King Jr. was shot by a white racist as he stood on the second floor balcony outside his motel room in Memphis, Tennessee. #velshi
2/13
King’s dream, that all people be judged by the content of their character, and not by the color of their skin, is a fight that continues today and was the reason King received a Nobel Peace Prize just three years earlier. He was celebrated with high honors in NYC. #velshi
3/13
The reception in his hometown, Atlanta, however, was a different story. It was 1964 Atlanta was still a self-segregated city - so plans for an interracial dinner honoring King were not well supported by the city's top business leaders. Tickets weren’t selling. #velshi

During an interview on Fox, the now Senate minority leader said: "I don't believe I have spoken with him [President Biden] since he was sworn in.” #velshi

Mitch McConnell’s office later confirmed that wasn’t accurate since McConnell himself told reporters just last month that he and Biden had spoken about issues in Myanmar, the budget process and the coronavirus relief bill. #velshi

McConnell, seeming to want to score some points said: “there has been no effort whatsoever by the president or the administration to do anything in the political center." #velshi

While we await more information about the recent fatal shootings of 8 people, 6 of whom were Asian women, in GA, we know enough about the chilling effect the killings have had on Asians in American, especially in light of the recent surge in violence against them. #velshi
2/12
None of this is new. Anti-Asian racism has a long and troubling history, including the passage of the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 - a law specifically designed to prevent Chinese American laborers from entering the country. #velshi
3/12
To this day it’s the only law ever passed to prevent all members of a specific ethnic or national group from immigrating here. Scapegoating Asian Americans for public health issues is not new, either. #velshi

There’s a special relationship between a shark and a pilot fish. On the surface it appears friendly, but it’s better described as “mutualistic,” where each species benefits from the relationship. #velshi
2/11
In this case, the pilot fish gets protection against predators while feeding off fragments of food in the shark’s teeth which, in turn, helps the shark avoid potentially deadly parasites. An unlikely pairing - a Pilot Fish and a shark - but together they work. #velshi
3/11
That seems to be the best analogy for the relationship between Lindsey Graham and Donald Trump. And if it wasn’t already clear - Trump is the shark and Graham is the pilot fish in this scenario. #velshi
