the thing that is actually incredible about the space race and both the Russian and U.S. space programs is how FEW people died. I don't expect the same from corporate run, exploitation driven space races.
i've been watching 'for all mankind' lately, an alt-history about the USSR reaching the moon first. They have the first cosmonaut give a propagandistic speech about marxist-leninist civilization. and tbh, I don't believe that would've happened.
the U.S. was drowning in propaganda just like the USSR, and the stakes were high. But Neil Armstrong didn't waste that moment on politics or propaganda. I don't think any person capable of being first on the moon would've let that happen.
i am pretty fundamentally pessimistic about the United States. but I've always been proud of Neil's words. and I've been proud of the plaque we left behind on the moon: "We came in peace for all mankind."

hi does anyone in Oregon know where I could get horse meat? Ideally an entire horse.

I have a recipe I need to try once it is eel season again
since i was a young man I have dreamt of an Eel Horse: an entire horse carcass stuffed with eels, seasoned, wrapped and buried in a pit fire and cooked until crispy.

as far as I know no one has ever made this and I aim to be first
i haven't entirely ironed out the spices but I think a lot of truffle salt on the eels and saffron / chili powder for the horse

i have had hundreds of interactions with the police over my life. I have never been arrested. I have never once felt safer as a result of their presence in a situation.
i have never been arrested for the same reason I have never been seriously injured by an angry dog. The same tactics work on both. Your best best bet for safety with with cops is to treat them like violent and unpredictable animals.
this all of course presumes you are white. I would not attempt to give anyone else advice on dealing with the cops.

the state under Trump and Biden has made it very clear that we have two options:

1. Radical mutual aid

2. Death
Radical mutual aid does not just mean "donating canned goods" or whatever.

It means creating and expanding a durable safety net that exists outside the state.
I don't precisely know yet how I plan to help with this, besides raising funds as I have done for years.

I will be announcing something this year though.

I just got an ad for "Trump Passports" for "Trump Citizens" who want to get ready for "MAGA 2024"

whoever is selling this, I don't think it's the official trump campaign. the address is listed as 1600 pennsylvania avenue and the website seems...off a picture of a bearded hipster dude with a nose ring and the
here's an internal page from the passport. it is absolutely impossible to know if this is a joke or not Inside page of a passport. There's a picture of a wall next

If you are wondering why Texas's electrical grid is on the brink of collapse, it's because Texas is the only of the lower 48 states with its own power grid. The reasons for this boil down to "fuck the federal government."

This does not work well.

texastribune.org/2011/02/08/tex…
In 2011, and on other emergency occasions, Texas has had to borrow power from Mexico, who are objectively better neighbors than us.

On the last big winter storm I was here for, much of Dallas lost power for 2 weeks. We had electric workers from like a dozen states come to help.
The message of all this is that Texas's toxic style of libertarianism is not real. "Rugged individualism" repeatedly gets us into trouble and we have to be bailed out by our neighbors.

Anyway, 100,000 people in DFW have to boil their water now because the treatment plant broke.

Antifascists tried to warn everyone about this for years

Nothing that happened today was a surprise

the seeds of all this were documented by people like @EmilyGorcenski, @RoseCityAntifa, @socialistdogmom, @AntiFashGordon, @GoadGatsby and @lilsarg for years.
Goad and Emily stood against Nazis during Unite the Right in Charlottesville, 2017. Joe Biden used footage of them being assaulted in his campaign ads.

But no mainstream politician actually listened to them.
Also @danieleharper and his wonderful podcast I Don't Speak German. @idsgpod. No one put in more work following these people.
