The big winner of the evening was Nomadland, which won:
⭐ Best Picture
⭐ Best Actress (Frances McDormand)
⭐ Best Director (Chloe Zhao)
British winners:
✅ Daniel Kaluuya
✅ Emerald Fennell
Missed out:
❌ Olivia Colman
❌ Vanessa Kirby
Emerald Fennell won Best Original Screenplay for her debut feature Promising Young Woman.
Fennell was so sure she wasn't going to win she didn't even write a speech. "I’m going to be in trouble with Steven Soderburgh," she said on stage
Daniel Kaluuya picked up the award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. He thanked God, people from "London town to Kampala" and his parents for "having sex"
Vanessa Kirby missed out on the Best Actress award to Frances McDormand.
Olivia Colman was overlooked for the Best Supporting Actress award as Youn Yuh-Jung became the first Korean to win the prize for her role in Minari
There were a number of awards handed to black and Asian actors, including Yuh-Jung Youn, who became the first Korean to win the best supporting actress Oscar.
Mia Neal and Jamika Wilson became the first black women to win an Oscar for best hair and makeup
“I also stand here as Jamika and I break this glass ceiling with so much excitement for the future. Because I can picture Black trans women standing up here and Asian sisters and our Latina sisters and Indigenous women" | Mia Neal
Yuh-Jung Youn was wonderfully giggly to be on the same stage as Brad Pitt, asking where he had been all her life.
Paying tribute to best supporting actress nominee Glenn Close, Yuh-Jung almost appeared embarrassed to have won, saying: “I think tonight I’m just luckier than you”
🏆 From trainers on the red carpet to gowns embellished with 62,000 sequins
Regina King's ice-blue Louis Vuitton gown reportedly took 140 hours to make and is comprised of 62,000 sequins, 3,900 pale sparkling Swarovski crystals and 4,500 in darker tones, plus 80 metres of chain stitching.
Angela Bassett wore Alberta Ferretti
⭐ The underdresseds ⭐
Frances McDormand opted for a plain black dress with subtle feathered detailling, barely-there make-up, mussed-up hair and a tiny pair of earrings.
She was joined in this casual approach by Nomadland director Chloe Zhao, who wore trainers with her dress
⭐ The midriff flashers ⭐
Zendaya offered a hint of a toned stomach through strategic slicing. Andra Day, in Vera Wang, worked with a welder to seal her chainmail gown, while Viola Davis’s laser cut Alexander McQueen bodice was dyed to match her skin tone
⭐ The Gwyneth impersonator ⭐
Gwyneth Paltrow's presence was felt in British actress Vanessa Kirby who opted for a pale rose pink Gucci gown which looked like a modern riff on Paltrow's 1999 Ralph Lauren concoction
⭐ The new queens of frou-frou ⭐
British winner Emerald Fennell announced her pregnancy on the red carpet wearing chintzy Gucci. Laura Dern won the award for most feathers worn on the night, in Oscar de la Renta
⭐ The simple and chics ⭐
Youn Yuh Jung was a greynaissance Grace Kelly in her navy Marmar Halim gown accessorised with a silvery updo. Margot Robbie in a shimmery silver Chanel dress and Reese Witherspoon in Grecian red Dior also looked simply lovely
⭐ The statuettes ⭐
Dresses that sculpt the body in gravity defying feats served to show off lockdown toned figures - see Halle Berry’s draped Dolce and Gabbana and Amanda Seyfried’s plisse pleated Giorgio Armani by way of example
⭐ Wearing the trousers ⭐
Glenn Close beat young Hollywood at its own game, twerking for the cameras in her Armani Privé. Styled by Chloe Hartstein, her look was a beaded tunic, worn over sharp navy satin trousers. She accessorised with inky leather gloves
🏆 The best looks from last night's awards ceremony
"McDormand has now won three Oscars in the lead acting category – bringing her level with Daniel Day-Lewis, and only one behind behind Katharine Hepburn, the all-time champ" | Writes @robbiereviews
"Childlike vulnerability hasn’t been something Hopkins has opened up to show us in a long, long while, but he seems ready for this role, hungry to do it, and you may not be prepared for how deep he goes" | Writes @trim_obey
"The men at this year’s Oscars were on point in their interpretations of formal-meets-free-and-easy. Let’s call it ‘soft smart’, and it should be your dress code for easing back into the world"
"Watching live, it felt like the opposite of the great La La Land/Moonlight mix-up of 2017 – not so much 'wait, what?' As 'oh, right'" | Writes @robbiereviews
"Fennell’s acceptance speech for writing Promising Young Woman, the first award of the night, was spontaneous and loopy, the sort of affectionate gush we only get from a dyed-in-the-wool British luvvie" | Writes @trim_obey
📏 While the Government is confident that restrictions on meeting others will cease on June 21, it appears likely that some form of social distancing will stay in place.
Pubs have warned that if distancing rules stay in place, it will be a disaster
🍻Venues that rely on full houses to profit are awaiting results of the Gov review into the 1m distancing rule.
❌ Chief executive of UK Hospitality, said 'Unless the Gov lifts restrictions in full our businesses will remain unviable... they will not be able to make a profit'
👙 Compared to those photos of glistening bikini-clad models, obesity expert @drnickfuller’s interval weight loss strategy is a touch less glamorous. But that’s the point.
📉 If you started following it today, you’d only have lost a maximum of 2kgs (4.4lbs) by the end of July
His programme is divided into four-week cycles:
⭐ Week 1 ⭐
You aim to lose nothing in order to “wash out” any effects of a diet or over-eating
