1 Madras High Court ordered HR & CE to monitor the Mural Paintings in Adhikeasava Perumal – Thiruvattaru
Since 2015, renovation has been going on in the Adikesava Perumal Temple. The only paint allowed to be used in all renovation works is mural paint.
2 In addition to paint the artistic works on the walls inside and outside the sanctum sanctorum, mural paint is used to paint the deities and all the sculptures on the gopuram. In essence, all the painting works in the temple are, traditionally, done only by mural paint.
3 Mural paint is a combination of seasonal herbs collected and refined using traditional methods.
For years, devotees have been continuously complaining that acrylic paint is used in the renovation works instead of mural / herbal paint.
4 The present contractor has no trained manpower to undertake mural / herbal paint and only acrylic paint has been used so far in the renovation works. Many people complained to the HR & CE Department in the past about this use of acrylic paint.
5 Even in his public interaction on 1st November 2020, it was again reiterated to the Commissioner, HR & CE Department that ordinary paint (acrylic paint) is used in the renovation works instead of herbal paint and this issue needs to be examined on urgent basis.
6 The Commissioner agreed to examine the issue. In this connection, one Mr. Sridharan, Advocate, Chennai filed a Public Interest Litigation in WP MD No.8839 of 2021. The WP came up before the Division bench of Justices TS Sivagnanam and S Ananthi yesterday.
7 After hearing the arguments, the bench was pleased to direct the HR & CE department to monitor the mural paintings done from the beginning of the renovation works and take necessary action.
