It is evident that Congress has always been led by a conglomerate or mixture rather than a fusion of leaders of different ideas from left to right and were guided by democratic culture, principles, philosophies of Congress.
But they were united in addressing public concerns.

The domination of groups within started happening possibly post-Nehru-Shastri period. There were instances even before of leaders with identical, similar views grouping together.
But post-Shastri period the tussle became power-centric in the garb of principles, policies.

Indira was more in the mould of Nehru who said ‘He was revolutionary in spirit, did not believe in the status quo, wanted to change India and the world—but in a human way. For him means were important but ends were far more so’.

It is natural and acceptable if leaders hold a different mindset on issues but in public life but there should not be ulterior motives, urge to usurp power and position.
In a way, it is short-circuiting the power of the people in a democracy to choose their leader and party.

People elect their representatives on the basis of their trust and hopes in political leaders and the party concerned. In reality people rely more on political leadership than the party. This is true even for cadre-based parties.
So the party should respect these mass leaders.

The ambitious leaders refuse to see where they draw their power and they do not have the necessary trust and support of the masses. Even good and potential leaders fall into unrealistic beliefs and hopes.
They start dividing the party and people. Finally, they lose both.

Some of these opportunistic leaders formed parties; pulled out some cadres of parent parties into their groups.
They could become power centres and could bargain with their own parent parties or other parties.
They were fluid and unethical to keep their political lifeline.

The group culture was never reversed. The divisions, mutual suspicions, hatred were spread. The cancerous growth of these destructive, disastrous political practices culminated in fascist leader and the right-wing sectarian group usurping power hoodwinking the people.
