Here is a summary of today’s #COVID19AB numbers: We have identified 1,731 new cases and completed 16,567 tests. Our positivity rate is 10.3%. Over the last 24 hours, we have also identified 1,132 new VoC cases. Variants currently make up 62% of active cases in Alberta. (1/6)
There are 648 people in hospital, including 155 in ICU. Sadly, three new deaths were reported over the past 24 hours. My deepest sympathies to the friends and families of these individuals and to anyone grieving the loss of a loved one. (2/6)
With the rise in COVID-19 cases, our lab system has adjusted our testing strategy to ensure sufficient capacity for general COVID-19 testing. (3/6)
Starting yesterday, and similar to other provinces, Alberta labs have shifted to a targeted representative screening approach for VoCs on positive COVID-19 test samples. (4/6)
We are continuing to conduct variant screening of populations at high risk of VoCs, including returning travellers, outbreak cases and health care workers. (5/6)
Please make safe, responsible choices and continue to follow all public health measures: no indoor gatherings, keep two metres apart and wear a mask in indoor public settings. If you develop symptoms, stay home and book a test at albertahealthservices.ca/topics/Page170… (6/6)

We’re making a small update to how youth born in 2006-09 (turning 12-15) with eligible underlying health conditions in Phase 2B can book appointments for the #COVID19AB vaccine. (1/6)
As you know, these youth are eligible because their health problems put them at greater risk of severe outcomes from this virus. (2/6)
Previously, we required a doctor’s letter for those 12-15 before booking an appointment. Starting today, a letter is not required. This change is made based on feedback from parents, family doctors, and pediatricians. (3/6)

I would like to update you on work that’s underway to reduce #COVID19AB testing wait times in #YYC. (1/6)
Testing volumes in Calgary Zone have more than doubled in the last 4-6 weeks & we are providing 5000+ tests/day. This has resulted in some waiting 3-5 days for tests, which is too long. (2/6)
In order to address this wait time we are implementing multiple strategies to increase swabbing capacity. This includes extending hours at sites w/ the highest demand & adding staff at assessment centres & swabbing sites. (3/6)
