Here is a summary of today’s #COVID19AB update: Over the last 24 hrs, we ID’d 2,012 new cases, completed about 15K+ tests & ID’d 1.9K new variant cases. Variants currently represent about 64% of our active cases. Our positivity rate stands at 13.2%. (1/9)

For the previous week, the R value for AB was 1.12, incl 0.99 in #YEG Zone, 1.16 in #YYC Zone, & 1.18 for the rest of AB. There are active alerts/outbreaks in 808 schools, which represents 33% of the schools across AB. Above 1 means growth. (2/9)

We have added the Town of Okotoks and Rocky View County to the hot spots list. Both of them have met the threshold and so the additional restrictions now apply. alberta.ca/enhanced-publi… (3/9)

There are 658 ppl in hospital, incl 154 in the ICU. Sadly, 4 new deaths were reported in the last 24 hrs. It is critical to remember that these are not just numbers, they are people. My deepest sympathies are with anyone grieving the loss of someone they loved. (4/9)

As the variants spread & older ABs are vaccinated, we have seen cases rising fastest in our younger age groups. I know teachers & childcare workers have been waiting their turn & will be booking appointments first thing tomorrow. (5/9)

Today’s announcement is important. 52K+ certified teachers, 29K support staff + 24K child care workers will be able to get the vaccine, helping protect schools, daycares and the health of children & youth province-wide. (6/9)

Despite the recent delay in Janssen vaccines, Alberta will also deploy 20K additional vaccines to support the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo & Banff. The age group eligible for immunization in these communities will be lowered to 18 + in these communities as well. (7/9)

I also want to reiterate the importance for everyone who is eligible to choose protection for themselves & those around them. If you are 50+, FNMI 35+, a health care worker, firefighter, caregiver, or anyone else listed on our website you can get the vaccine right now. (8/9)

If you’re eligible & on the fence about whether to get the vaccine, I urge you to do so. It is the best available protection. By being vaccinated, you will reduce the risk of COVID-19 for you & those you love & help to reduce spread of this virus in your community. (9/9)
