This is a thoughtful take on the whole Basecamp situation:

"Basecamp’s new policies, and how they were communicated, are sufficient evidence of poor decision-making on their own.

The policies are openly hostile to the workforce."

@fakebaldur
"Basecamp went from ostensibly being an open and trusting workplace to lockdown in the space of a few days.

Changes as drastic as these mean there has been a rupture between staff and management."

@fakebaldur
Yesterday (before @CaseyNewton's second article came out), Jon and I recorded a conversation on Basecamp.

Many of you will know that we've been fans of theirs for a long time. This was a tough one to process.

🎯 "People are what they do. You are what you do. Let your actions be informed by what you read and hear, but always apply ideas with a critical and experimental mindset."

@fakebaldur Image
This is a good time to reflect:

"Do my actions reflect my values?"

"Do the people I follow, read, and support online reflect my values?"

Indie makers, leaders, tech workers, founders, writers, podcasters, creators...

It's what we repeatedly do that matters. Every action is a vote for the kind of person we'll be.

For those of us who share our thoughts/opinions with the world, this is a sobering reminder:

"Act like a scientist, not like a preacher.” (@AdamMGrant)

The problem with preaching strong beliefs is that it closes you off. You're not open to correction. You become entrenched.
For those of us who looked up to Jason and David, wrestling with this stuff is uncomfortable.

Basecamp's example is what inspired many of us to build our own companies.

But truthfully, this was a parasocial relationship. We didn't really *know* them. We only saw one side.
"Parasocial relationships may be the most important psychological effect of the modern tech era.

In our minds, we believe that we “know” someone that we don’t." – @edzitron

In my 20s-30s all my followers were my age, but now I’m 40 and most of y’all are still 20-30s?
Folks in their 40s-50s have been making stuff on the internet since the early 90s, but soon we’ll all be working for 22 year-old billionaires who got rich minting NFTs and buying dogecoin. 😅
Like, 80% of you don’t know about Commander Keen.

Curious about Apple's new Podcasts Connect?

I just got access and tried to submit a new podcast RSS feed.

Here's how it went...
It took about 10+ hours before I was able to get access to my existing Apple Podcasts Connect account and see the podcasts I already had active on Apple Podcasts.

Overall, the new interface feels cleaner. 👍
For existing podcasters, the biggest improvement is Apple Podcasts' new analytics.

You can drill into each episode, and see where listener drop-off occurred.

Really helpful feedback if you're trying to optimize your show. 💯

Wow. Ok. Some pretty big @ApplePodcasts announcements for podcasters at today's #AppleEvent.

I'm still digging through it, but here's a thread with some quick thoughts.

First, in true Apple fashion, they didn't let me (or @TransistorFM) know any of this was coming.

There was speculation, but no official word from anyone at Apple.

The only thing we knew was yesterday, as reported by @Podnews, submissions went offline. Image
There's a total refresh of Apple's Podcast Connect.

Lots of new features: "ability to edit metadata, organize shows into channels, manage multiple users and roles." Looks like new analytics too.

I haven't been able to access it yet. Anyone else have luck? Image

🎙️ Want me to help improve your podcast's listing on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, etc?

(One of the best ways to get more listeners is to improve your show's "packaging:" cover art, title, description)

Reply to this thread with a link to your pod, and I'll record a video for you. 👉
More info here.

(Note, I'll be publishing these videos publicly so everyone can learn. 👍)

If you're selling anything online, pay attention to these two variables:

1. Unit economics: how profitable is one "unit" of your product or service? (one digital download, 1 month of MRR)

2. Sales volume: how many units can you sell every month?
📊 Unit economics

Think about a musician. 👩‍🎤🎸

## She used to make:

🎵 On iTunes:
Retail price: $0.99 / track
Artist profit: $0.69 / track

## But now she makes:

🟢 On Spotify:
Artist profit: $0.007 / stream

Her profit per unit has gone WAY down.
📉 Sales volume

🎵 On iTunes, an artist needed to sell 3,623 tracks to earn $2,500 in a month.

🟢 On Spotify, she needs to get 357,143 streams to earn $2,500 in a month.

Because of poor unit economics, the volume required to hit baseline has gone WAY up.

“Treating social media providers as [a public utility] threatens to convert natural monopoly or essential facility claims into self-fulfilling prophecies.”

mercatus.org/system/files/P…
Odd to see folks advocating that Twitter should be a “government controlled utility.”

So, you want to fight censorship by giving a central government control over the big social media platforms?

(Personally, as a citizen, I’m more afraid of being censored by the government)
A central totalitarian government controlling communication channels is the literal definition of “Orwellian.” Image
