In 1995, Howard, a Navy vet, was convicted of a first-time marijuana offense. Virginia’s strict mandatory minimum laws for drug crimes didn't give him many options. He pled guilty without knowing the devastating immigration consequences that would result from this decision. 🧵👇🏽
After completing his sentence, Howard worked hard to rebuild his life. He devoted himself to his wife, two children, and starting two small businesses.
In 2005 he applied to become a US citizen, disclosing his old offense.
Five years later, his application was denied.
At 6 a.m. one morning, ICE agents handcuffed & detained him at his home in front of his family. After two years fighting his case in immigration detention far away from his family, Howard was deported to a country he had not seen in 24 years.
To make matters worse, the ruling political party is asking the gov't to declare emergency powers to deal w/the protests, which they say have been infiltrated by illegal groups 🙄
Each day, 600+ kids arrive at the 🇺🇸 🇲🇽 border w/o their parents.
Make no mistake, families don't make decisions like this lightly.
But ultimately, however dangerous the trek north may be...staying behind is, many times an assurance of violence and/or poverty.
A thread 🧵👇🏾
Upon arriving, unaccompanied children are supposed to be held in CBP custody for a max of 72 hrs after which they're sent to an Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) temporary shelter.
There, they wait to be reunified with a family member/sponsor. But that’s not the full story...
Inside influx shelters like Carrizo, our staff provides Know Your Rights presentations for kids.
Bc we believe it's imperative every child know their rights & have access to legal rep, as their time detained is coupled w/the start of deportation proceedings in immigration court.
Today our Director of Released Children’s Services is visiting the Carrizo Springs detention center along with members of Congress. We're currently providing the kids detained there with legal services.
As RAICES, we’ve been at the frontlines of this issue for many years.🧵👇🏽
Let us be clear: There is no “security crisis” or “surge” at the border. The situation we are facing is nothing new. Child migration and the numbers of kids we're seeing enter through the border is not unprecedented, unusual or surprising. Statistically this was very predictable.
The number of children coming into the US changes depending on the time of year.
This is normal. This is expected. This is something the government can prepare for.
To no surprise Operation Lone Star is Abbott's latest attack on the migrant community, an operation upholding racist rhetoric from the previous administration.
Abbott seems to be incapable of protecting Texans under a pandemic, yet highly skilled in criminalizing migrants. 🧵👇🏽
Under Operation Lone Star air, ground, marine and tactical border security units will be deployed to "high-threat areas for cartel activity and drug smuggling".
The data backing this increase of criminal activity seem to stem from Abbott claiming to know "cartel strategy".
Abbott's blatant hypocrisy of stalling efforts to approve federal funds for #COVID19 safety & lifting the mask mandate only supports the xenophobic characterization of immigrants as a risk to public health.
Which is what Title 42 is & what he's using to his political advantage.
.@ICEgov is saying these facilities will simply become “3 day processing centers” for those given Notices to Appear (a charging doc initiating removal proceedings).
But we've been representing families inside of Karnes for years & can pretty much call BS on this.
For the past 3 years we’ve observed up close countless & frequent policy changes directly impacting the lives of people seeking safety, imprisoned by our gov't.
ICE can resume expedited removal & prolonged detention at any moment.
