WHAT HAPPENS DURING CANCER

Imagine a group of secondary school students observing morning devotion. They are well spruced up, in form and are completely harmless. This is how the cells in your body are. They will likely remain in this shipshape state in the absence of any ImageImage
external insult.

Now imagine a mad cow suddenly runs towards the direction of those students. What do you expect to see? The reaction will be panic, anxiety, commotion. The students will take to their heels, they will bump against each other. Some will try to run into the
classrooms, destroying the furniture; some into the school farm, destroying the crops. There will be a frank stampede. Some students may even lose their life in the process. Note that these students were initially harmless before the arrival of the "initiator"

This is exactly...
what happens in cancer. Cancer is quite different from other diseases like malaria. In malaria, a foreign body is fighting your system. But in cancer, your own cells which have become "mad" for some reason, so to speak, are the ones fighting you. Normal cells of your body are i
n form, with constant interaction with one another. Their rate of growth and multiplication is strictly controlled. This occurs through a complex process mediated by certain genes in your body e.g P53 and RB gene.

Whenever there is a mutation in those genes and in the presence
of certain environmental factors, the cells go haywire. The rate of multiplication of the cells is no more controlled. The cells enter a state of stampede, multiplying uncontrollably. In some cases, the mad cells remain in their area of origin(benign tumours e.g fibroadenoma of
the breast and uterine fibroid). In other cases, the mad cells may spread to other sites of the body causing severe problems (malignant tumours also known as cancer e.g cervical cancer)

The cervix is a tubelike structure which is the lower portion of the uterus (womb). It's like
a doorway to the where the baby forms. For some reason, it is one of the most susceptible parts of the body of a woman to undergo tumorogenesis and subsequent malignant transformation

Every Nigerian woman is susceptible to cervical cancer but the risk significantly increases at
age 45 . Cervical cancer is associated with lacklustre sequelae like infertility, decrease in quality of life, paralysis and death.

Fortunately enough, the causative virus, Human Papilloma Virus (HOV) has be vaccinated against.

There is a tradition in Akwa Ibom and Cross River State called “Ekpo Nka Owo.” People in this states believe that if you cheat on your husband, during childbirth, the lanour will be prolonged and the baby and mother will be killed by the deity called Ekpo Nka Owo Image
Ekpo Nka Owo literarily means Deity of Adultery. Women suspected to be in this situation are usually asked to mention the names of all the men they slept with and confess to their husband a free which a fetish rite is carried out to appease the deity before the woman can deliver

Told my friend in Finland that sometimes, I slap my patient arms for veins to become visible to site IV access or obtain blood sample. She started sobbing profusely and said, “How can you be slapping a human that is already sick when you can just use a VEIN FINDER?’
Initially, I felt she was mad for her to cry but later I realized I was the mad one for not crying too. My country has made the abnormal seem normal for me. My country has ruined me.
After that, she sent me a picture of this vein finder. With this device you can never slap a patent’ s arm for veins. You can never pierce a patient more than once looking for vein to put cannula no matter how fat he is because it brings all the Veins right before your face.

THE TEARS AND WOES OF THE HOUSE OFFICER, THE MOST ABUSED AND MALTREATED DOCTOR IN NIGERIA

Medical education in Nigeria lasts for 6 years, after which the new Doctor has to do a compulsory one year program called internship or Housemanship in a teaching hospital or
Federal Medical Centre. This Doctor called a House Officer, practices with a temporary (provisional) license under the supervision of more senior Doctors which can be registrars, senior registrars or consultants. It is only at the end of this program that he can enroll in the
mandatory NYSC program.

A House Officer is the first port of call when a new patient reaches the hospital. He clerks the patient and presents same to his seniors who make a diagnosis and write out what the house officer should do for the patient.

This is Dr Okorie Ifeanyi Venatus,an intern Doctor in UPTH. He collapsed with his forehead to the ground after a 72 hour shift as the only House Officer in the unit.

He and other intern Doctors all over Nigeria have not been paid for 3 months now (Since December 2020).
A country which treats bandits and herdsmen better than her Doctors is headed for doom.
There is no one to speak for these young, helpless, Vulnerable Doctors called House Officers . Their umbrella body NARD, which they pay dues to, keeps telling stories after stories since January. No action. Imagine working for 3 months under harsh conditions but no pay.

In december of 2003, Joyce Vincent died of an asthma attack in her North London flat. The television was left on.

The mail continued to be delivered. Her rent was set up to be automatically deducted from her bank account.

The days rolled by and no one noticed she was gone.
Those days turned into weeks and the weeks into months.

There were large trash dumpsters on the side of the building next to her unit, so the neighbors never thought much of the smell emanating from her flat.
The floor was full of noisy kids and teenagers and no one questioned the constant thrum of television noise in the background.

Eventually, Joyce’s bank account dried up.

Her landlord sent her letters of collection. These letters, like the others, simply fell into the stacks
