Sam, your true life line is service. Service is the one thing that never goes unrewarded in this life and in the one to come. Those who are truly happy, wealthy and wise are always rendering service.
They are giving away their time, energy, resources, money, all and more through service. They plant trees in whose shades they may never sit under because they realise a life well lived is lived in the service of others.
Anything you do for you stays with you, anything you do for others stays with them. One thing that will outlive you is your selfless service to your world.
In the ancient text, we see the Rabbi commending faithful service in several of his parables. But one epic display of service was that of the four friends of the man sick of palsy. Now recognise that we live in a world where people are always about "what is in it for me".
Yet this man sick of palsy had four friends who will not abandon him but go all out to ensure that he was back on his feet again.
They removed the roof so they could drop down their sick friend to meet with the Rabbi who seeing their faith through their service healed their sick friend. But what kind of a person was the sick man, that his four friends went all the way for him?
Sam, it may not have been categorically stated but you can infer he was a person of service. That is the only reason he was not abandoned by his four friends.
You already know that the nature of people is to abandon the one who is no longer profitable and useful to them. But this person must have rendered service to each of the four friends that they felt indebted to him for life. His life life was his service.
Remember, the woman who broke her alabaster, the Rabbi said of her that as long as the gospel is preached, her name will be mentioned as a memorial. Her service got her into the gospel memorial for life. When push comes to shove, service becomes your only life line.
