1/ 🧵Unethical and apparently uninsured experiments to remove isolation in schools.

Its ridiculous, and are they seriously considering continuing while B1.617.2 begins circulating whilst also removing masks?
#edutwitter
2/ Many questions have been raised regarding the ethics of these experiments, not only does it potentially increase risks but only those who skip isolation need to give consent
3/ I know its in the link above, but @neupresident and @HoppySaul are right to be stunned by this.
Thank you @SafeEdForAll_UK for seeking and and sharing the FOI
4/Some of the answers to the FOI are interesting, there 2 other I want to pick out.

This answer claims studies show DCT could cut transmission and this was a key decision in the "balance of risks"

Love how even they use quotation marks
5/ However the study they cite at the start of the FOI is the SPI-M-O one I've previously covered.
The study says this could cut transmission IF take up of LFDs was very low and those who weren't previously taking LFD tests took up testing because of this

6/ So @SafeEdForAll_UK, relying on their own modelling, they need to have data on take up of LFD and should be monitoring take up. If they cant demonstrate an increase then the model itself says this will be less safe.
7/ Of course this still ignores the fact the model which wasn't originally designed for schools assumes 50% of identified close contacts fail to isolate.

Schools have 100% isolation, we don't let identified close contacts through the gates
8/ The other answer from FOIs

PCRs are also taken, but this isn't ad a safety precaution, results aren't revealed for 2 weeks.

Why?

PCRs are for data collection, revealing results would alter the experiment and the DfE doesn't intend on using PCRs for back up.
9/ So if an asymptomatic close contact tests positive on a PCR, and the LFD doesn't pick it up, they will allow that person to go on public transport and into school to preserve the experiment.

This is the careful control that makes it legal and ethical 🤷‍♂️
10/ Carefully controlled...
11/ On the question of liability in general, its interesting the conversations at least one MAT is having with its heads.

inews.co.uk/news/coronavir…
12/ Been working with staff and parents in trials schools to challenge these experiments
If your involved in one of these schools @JamesCarr_93 of @SchoolsWeek and @Zubhaque of @IndependentSage have done a lot to draw attention to these trials
As has @dgurdasani1 @Dr2NisreenAlwan
13/ Several parents in these schools have felt so uncomfortable about these trials they contacted the heads, asking about consent and safety, in a mind to withdraw their children.

Think how families with an immune suppressed member must feel about their children being in these.
14/ After pushing until they get to speak to those running the trials, what reassurance are they getting?

1/2
15/ So the message is, we don't need to ask for your consent, if you don't like that then leave.
2/2
16/ Yet these trials continue while local directors of public health, including my own, are coming out to the spikes in cases are linked to schools (Over 40% of cases in my LA are from schools)

At the same time gov are writing letters to UfT regarding masks not being recommended
17/ UfT are particularly excited by this statement from gov.

Where is gov getting its epidemiological information from? Its not SAGE, they advise keeping masks in schools for now.
18/ Also wondering about what evidence they are using on damage to wellbeing as they "balance risks"

I don't know what they are, but we do know the risks of long covid

@LongCovidKids
19/19
Whats really frustrating is how little the school trials have been raised in the media, for instance the nightclub experiments gained a lot of attention.

I'd like to see the science that says masks are needed in staffrooms but not classrooms.

Any other countries end up with a policy like this in schools?

Don't think so
#edutwitter #r4today @LBC
Every media studio this week

Scientist/Union/Parent: SAGE say masks should stay for now

Presenter: Cant keep wearing them for ever, if not now then when?

S/U/P: Couple of months?

P: What about balance of harms

SUP: What harms?

P:.er..learning..mental health?

SUP:Evidence?
Presenter: Now after dismissing SAGE advice, for balance I turn to a member of CRG/GBD/ or skeptic lobbyists group who have proliferated disinformation and opposed lockdowns and all safety measures in schools throughout, while also dismissing long covid in children and staff.

1/ 🧵 Arguments about data, confidentiality, consent and masks.

Interesting couple of days.
Data on VOC were released later than usual, B1.617.2 outbreaks are occuring in education settings as government seems set on removing masks
2/ There has been a lot of disinformation in the press about masks in schools, including promoting a court case that was found to be fundamentally flawed as the judge explained masks are encouraged but not mandated.
3/ This led to pro government media putting out headlines like "Johnson defies unions" ignoring the fact SAGE are advising for masks to be kept for now.

Certain media voices have been promoting the harms of masks for many months,it encourages the online abuse we recieve.

1/ 🧵Gaslighting and media misrepresentation, May edition.

Currently there's a push to remove masks and isolation in schools, some think nows the time, SAGE and ISAGE think otherwise.

Very tired of the abuse and accusations of an "agenda" just for thinking caution is best
2/ Scientists and Unions put out a letter calling to keep masks up to at least June.Yes we might want them after that but we don't want them forever as some might claim. This is part of the issue, misrepresentation

Some delightful replies to this tweet.⬇️
3/ Of course there will be trolls and the typical blue ticks but there have been ppl I respect who I think are usually thoughtful take an accusing tone.
Too political
Using children for my own agenda
Were the ones that annoyed me.

1/🧵 Questionable ethics in experiments with unvaccinated adults and children

Indian variant found in Leicestershire, few days later a Leicestershire school announces it will be entering experiments to not isolate close contacts.

Wise? ImageImage
This is how the trials work, screenshots are from the official documents sent out to schools taking part in the trials and the SPI-M-O paper the government put out as its scientific evidence for conducting these live experiments.
3/ Here's the local news

No mention of LFD reliability
Glosses over the consent issue
Quotes parent saying its wonderful they are finding ways to reduce isolation

Shouldnt we use measures that cut transmission like ventilation instead?

Would this be the Daily Mail that opposed schools being included in lockdowns, argued against safety measures and ran a double page hit job on senior NEU leaders on the day I later recieved death threats by phone?
@toryboypierce?
#edutwitter
This was the day I spent talking to the police after an anonymous phone call that afternoon telling me they wanted me to die and that I would die soon.

It also included descriptions of some colleagues homes and the area they lived in. Image
Its become an injoke with @neupresident that we are still waiting for the Mails NEU through the key hole edition of his home, for some reason they missed out the respected head teacher of a top grammar school when they tried to label us all as dangerous left wing militants

April 28th a bumper day for BS

1. Tory MPs writing to constituents to smear a group representing 10k NHS workers.
2. GBD skeptics trying to downplay covid deaths in India.

3. Man who downplayed long covid in children and never wanted masks in school because of "balance of harms" calls for masks to be banned in schools
