Breaking: #Taiwan reported 206 confirmed local #COVID19 cases, 1 imported cases.
Taipei: 97, New Taipei: 89, Yilan: 3, Taichung: 1
14 are related to the Wanhua tea parlor cluster and 19 cases have travel history to Wanhua.
More than 85% of the cases are still concentrated in Taipei and New Taipei city.
The CECC is releasing four major medical guidelines: 1. Offload some unnecessary and not urgent medical treatment or needs. 2. Increase monitoring, testing and reporting at the community level. 3. Suspend international treatment. 4. Increase the monitoring of employees' health.
Hospitals are now advised to test all incoming patients before they hospitalize anyone. They are also advised to test anyone who has already been admitted.
Businesses and companies continue to be urged to initiate remote working, especially for those who need to travel from one county to another county. If businesses can't ensure social distance in the office, they are advised to start remote working.
Update: Chen corrected himself: New Taipei City has 97 cases, including 32 in Banqiao and 89 in Taipei City, including 58 in Wanhua District. This doesn't change the fact that more than 80% of the cases are in the two major cities.
Changhua County also has 9 #COVID19 cases, Yilan and Hsinchu County have 3 cases each, Taoyuan and Keelung City have 2 cases each and Taichung has 1 case.
Chen urged citizens again they should all refrain from leaving home and going out to meet friends. He also called on everyone to stop passing around fake news at a time when concerns in civil society rises.
As the number of people getting tested at the rapid-testing stations increases, Chen calls on those going to get tested to let those with symptoms get tested first.
To deal with the latest #COVID19 outbreak, officials are calling on everyone to let those with symptoms to be treated at hospitals first. They are calling on those without symptoms to not rush to the hospitals in order to prevent any chance of cluster infection.
The number of empty beds for #COVID19 treatment is dwindling in Taipei and New Taipei. They are calling on hospitals that have been designated as #COVID19 hospitals to focus on treating those who have been identified as confirmed cases.
105 cases are related to the tea house in Wanhua, 44 are related to Wanhua travel history, New Taipei City club cluster has more than 50 cases.
Chen also confirmed that the government will try to establish more rapid testing stations not only in Taipei and New Taipei, but also in other parts of #Taiwan. He is discussing relevant mechanisms with the doctors' association.
Police stations have been checking out the massage parlors across Taipei and New Taipei, hoping to prevent further outbreaks through these channels.
Chen said that there are typical activities that are strictly prohibited but he is also calling on citizens to prevent very intimate interaction with others outside of their houses. He admitted that this is not something that the government can outright prohibited.
At least 119 #COVID19 confirmed cases are spotted through the rapid testing stations across Taipei.
One of today's cases start to have symptoms on April 6 but the person had a travel history at the end of last month and May 10. The person was only tested after he/she received the text from the CECC for his/her travel history to Wanhua district.
Chen also admitted that the government has faced difficulty trying to secure treatment places for all new confirmed cases, which is why he is advising everyone to let those with symptoms be hospitalized first before those without symptoms.
To ensure students don't contract #COVID19 virus, Taipei City and New Taipei City have announced that they will turn all 9th graders and 12 graders' classes to remote classes starting May 17.
Chen kept emphasizing that #Taiwan needs to adopt a measure that is strict enough but at the same time that fits the democratic nature of the country. He emphasized that pure enforcement may not really have the real positive effect that is expected as citizens might resist.
"Personal responsibility is very important and if everyone can strictly adhere to the disease-prevention measures, past examples have shown that these measures can be effective," said Chen before he ends today's presser.

I'm working on an explainer about #Taiwan's worst #COVID19 outbreak but I want to share some very sensible analysis by Professor Chi Chunhuei from Oregon State University, who has been closely studying Taiwan's disease prevention mechanism since the SARS epidemic:
"Taiwan has done well since the beginning of the outbreak by strictly guarding the border while domestically following a strict guideline of mask-wearing and maintaining social distancing. This allowed Taiwan to have no local cases by mid-April 2020.
The successful control quickly led Taiwanese people into what I called post-pandemic mode, largely living a very normal life."

From @nytimes: A rare insight into how @Apple has made compromises with #Beijing in order to do businesses in #China. "They offer an extensive inside look at how Apple has given in to escalating demands from the Chinese authorities." nytimes.com/2021/05/17/tec…
"@tim_cook, Apple’s chief executive, has said the data is safe. But at the data center in Guiyang, which Apple hoped would be completed by next month, and another in the Inner Mongolia region, Apple has largely ceded control to the Chinese government."
"Chinese state employees physically manage the computers. Apple abandoned the encryption technology it used elsewhere after China would not allow it. And the digital keys that unlock information on those computers are stored in the data centers they’re meant to secure."
