NEW—the faster transmission #B16172 variant will likely dethrone #B117 and become the dominant variant in 🇬🇧 “in a matter of days” and could pose unknown dangers. Since B16172 was upgraded last week by both WHO & UK, it has *doubled* in cases. 🧵#COVID19

2) #B16172 has now exceeded 30% of total variants. And likely to pass 50% very very soon and become dominant. The same thing happened before when #B117 replaced previous slow old strain(s).
3) I want people to consider this… Dr @larrybrilliant, who once led the eradication of smallpox off the face of the Earth 45 years ago—is worried as heck about #B16172. It’s not just me/ @chrischirp concerned… the preeminent pandemic epidemiologist in the world is worried too!!
4) Dr @larrybrilliant is right—it is *not* enough that the vaccine is “effective” for preventing severe disease from #B16172, the variant virus will keep spreading to uninfected and less than fully vaccinated people, which is still a lot of people in UK and the rest of the world.
5) This is why I’m so upset that people are taking off masks— it’s too early, and many experts say people will lie that they have been vaccinated to justify their non masking.
6) There is now outbreaks of #B16172 in multiple countries in SE Asia too including Singapore. Now there is a warning about pediatric risk with #B16172 as well from SG MOH…
7) the pediatric warning for #B16172 is also confirmed in India 🇮🇳 by doctors there too who are seeing more severe pediatric cases of #COVID19
8) Now the #B16172 variant is invading the US too. All while mask compliance is falling fast.

BREAKING—Oklahoma State Department of Health announced that it identified a cluster of 17 cases of the #B16172 variant, including 3 that were in fully vaccinated people. 2 others were partially vaccinated. Travel didn’t play a role.

2) “Dr. Dale Bratzler, the chief COVID officer for the University of Oklahoma, said data indicates B.1.617.2 variant — also called an India variant for where it was first detected — is about 6 times [lower neutralization] than other variants to antibodies generated by vaccines.”
3) That said, “Department of Health officials said last week that vaccines are still thought to provide some protection against the India variant, and contact tracing efforts were underway to learn more about the infections.”

TRAGIC—A key doctor & 12 of his family was killed in a Gaza air strike. Dr Abu al-Ouf was head of internal medicine at the Palestinian territory's main hospital, & oversaw al-Shifa's hospital response to #COVID19. The 12 dead included 2 of 3 of his kids.

2) As well as being in charge of internal medicine at al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City, Dr Abu al-Ouf oversaw its response to COVID.
He supervised the treatment of an entire ward of people with severe Covid-19 in a place where there are few specialists in respiratory illnesses.
3) He also trained students from two local medical schools. "To get someone as qualified as Ayman, you need at least 10 to 15 years of training," said Dr Zaanin, who named his own daughter Tala after his friend's.

A top Japanese medical organization now calls to cancel the Tokyo Olympics saying hospitals are already overwhelmed as the country battles a spike in #COVID19 infections less than three months from the start of the Games. 🧵 Image
2) The Tokyo Medical Practitioners Association representing about 6,000 primary care doctors said hospitals in the Games host city "have their hands full and have almost no spare capacity" amid a surge in infections.

STOP VARIANTS—The AstraZeneca vaccine is ineffective for mild and moderate #B1351 variant from South Africa 🇿🇦. Prior to Oct 31st (before B1351), 75% effective for non-B1351.

2) Look at the efficacy yourself — it is incredibly low overall 10-20% and not significant (not distinguishable from 0%).

It was only 75% in early part of the trial before #B1351 emerged. Image
3) Lots of questions about vaccines versus Indian variant #B16172– we just don’t know yet.

But what I worry is if some of the bad variants mix together and do recombination inside of a co infected person with both variants/strains… that could be very bad.

Different types of #COVID19 and vaccine hesitancy — the most worrying kind is “COVID skeptics”—the least likely to get vaccinated. The primary barrier for people are deeply held beliefs about Covid & at least one conspiracy theory. They are 14%. Oy.🧵

2) Covid skeptics believe supposedly “that microchips are implanted with the Covid vaccine; Covid-19 has been exploited by the government to control people; or that the pandemic was caused by a ring of people who secretly manipulate world events.” 🤦🏻‍♂️
3) “Covid Skeptics are common in Arkansas, North Dakota & Nevada. Considering that 84 percent of this group believe that the government is exploiting Covid-19 to control people, leaders of vaccination campaigns should consider tapping nonpolitical figures to mobilize this group.
