Justin Hendrix: There was legitimate bipartisan effort to implement the changes that McCarthy & others asked for to determine how the investigation would go.
@justinhendrix
Justin Hendrix: There's a real chance this will go to the Senate, and the Senate Republicans will put a stop to it. We'll see--others have withheld their judgement so far. It would be hypocritical for Repubs to filibuster this & would be another stain on McConnell
@justinhendrix
Justin Hendrix: This is an incredibly emotional & dramatic vote: will they go with Trump, continue to obfuscate, continue the big lies?
@justinhendrix
Justin Hendrix: I talked to my Congresswoman's aide about how 1/6 has changed how he views his job & what it felt like.
@justinhendrix
Justin Hendrix: On some level, maybe this is the start of a crack. Maybe things are changing a little. I'm very hopeful this commission passes in the Senate. If not, Dems have some options avail to them. We need to get to the bottom of this.
@justinhendrix
Justin Hendrix: Personally, I'm in favor of getting rid of the filibuster. We need to move forward. We need to get away from the tyranny of the Republican party.
@justinhendrix
Justin Hendrix: Americans deserve to know the truth about what happened on 1/6.
@justinhendrix
Justin Hendrix: Even in the current legislation, there's a deadline of Dec 31st. The longer this goes on, the better the chance we'll see a constrained commission. It's crucial we get this done right now.
@justinhendrix
Justin Hendrix: All parties seem to want to get this done before the midterms kick off & the commission becomes a political football. Will it even have a chance to get the queries out in order to get the info back in time?
@justinhendrix
Justin Hendrix: Political elites, the media, the information ecosystem, the way lies propagate are all important things we need to investigate, but it'll be difficult to do it in 6 months. The big lie continues to get advanced every day, going through permutations
@justinhendrix
Justin Hendrix: What 1/6 was about was denying the decision of the voter. That's where the Trumpist part of the Repub party would like to take things.
@justinhendrix
Justin: If just 1 or 2 people did things differently at the state level, we could be in a totally different place right now. Certainly by the time we get to 2024, it could happen again if Repubs have control of House & Senate. That's why we need the commission.
@justinhendrix
Justin Hendrix: Hopefully the commission can have live hearings with live testimony; that will grip the country & get them interested in it.
@justinhendrix
Justin Hendrix: Call your Senators. Call your friends & family in red states & encourage them to call, too. It all comes down to how a few folks feel about this & whether they're willing to part from Trump & McConnell.

Sarah Burris: The Capitol Police released a letter that basically took these Republicans to task for saying the insurrectionists were peaceful tourists. The Capitol Police basically said, "How dare you?" If that had more breathing room, I wonder if it'll sway Repubs

Renato Mariotti: I think "grift disguised as an audit" is a good way to describe what's going on in AZ. If we could give truth serum to Republicans, I'm sure many of them would agree. Bamboo in the ballots shows they're from China? So racist & ignorant.
@renato_mariotti
Renato Mariotti: It's a conclusion in search of evidence. They want to find evidence that the election was stolen, but Arizona wasn't even one of the determining states. While it's horrible for our nation, it's good the Repubs are divided.
@renato_mariotti
Renato Mariotti: It's good Repubs are at the level of deciding if landing on the moon really happened, because when they get serious, they focus on suppressing voting rights, for ex.

David Carroll: been recently discovered, esp. w/ all the shenanigans at the Postal Service, that their law enforcement arm is using Clearview AI to find people in social media very easily.
Rick: Okay, but WHY is the Postal Service using this?!
@profcarroll @parsonsdesign
David Carroll: This erases a boundary between social media & law enforcement that needs to be there.
Police depts also use Clearview AI; that software can be used to find child predators, for ex.

Bob Ney: One thing you have to say about that lawyer [Albert Watkins, defending one of the 1/6 insurrectionists], he managed to offend three different groups in one statement.
@bobney
Bob Ney: You can argue whether you need the commission or not. I think they could have set it up differently internally. It's bizarre to use the vote for the commission to determine if the people on 1/6 were tourists or insurrectionists.

Bob Ney: Steny Hoyer & I had put together a group to investigate what went wrong with ricin, anthrax, and 9/11. We wanted total transparency.
