#Thread #COVIDSecondWave

Marriage season in #TamilNadu has begun, and if people do not confine it to a very close family event, there are possibilities that weddings emerge as super spreaders. The situation could be alarming in rural areas. (1/n)
Government has put a cap on the number of people for marriage, but that is not followed in many places. In villages, marriages are held at the homes of either the bride or the groom. They are normally closed spaces. And neither social distancing nor masking is followed. (2/n)
Some 100 people will easily gather in a house for the wedding. And in villages, food will be served in houses that are close to the venue. The spread will be rapid of proper measures are not taken. Many people are shifting weddings to their residences from marriage halls (3/n)
Many people in rural areas still hesitate to wear a mask or get vaccinated. The responsibility of ensuring an incident-free wedding primarily lies with the family. And the government should also pitch in to ensure they don't turn super spreaders. (4/n)
Some of the things that can be done are to alert the local bodies to keep an eye on marriages. The Village Administrative Officers (VAO) can be asked to collect a list of marriages to be held in their area. There will be practical difficulties, but this can be done (5/n)
In case of town panchayats which have more staff, the Executive Officer (EO) can collect details of marriages to be held. The families should be sensitised on the need to keep it a very closed event and the importance of maintaining social distancing and masking. (6/n)
Panchayat staff should monitor the marriages. It is again difficult but can be done. If proper rules are not followed, the family can be imposed a fine. There is no other way than being strict in public interest. Covid behaviour is almost NIL in villages and small towns (7/n)
I can vouch for the NIL fact having lived through whole of the lockdown period in a small town during the first wave. My town witnessed at least 30 marriages on an auspicious day. Imagine what will happen if so many number of marriages happen in a day and people gather (8/n)
Government should be proactive in this though the primary responsibility is that of the family to follow the rules. Local panchayat staff should ensure compliance. If weddings lead to more cases in villages, the crisis will only compound. (9/n)
Already government hospitals in rural areas are handling more cases than their capacities. People should understand stress that health care workers are under and reduce on the guest list for weddings. All Covid protocol should be followed. This is only in public interest (10/n)

An unsolicited advice to families of those testing positive for #COVID19 .

Do not hesitate to take them to government hospitals in Chennai and elsewhere in #TamilNadu if doctors have advised immediate hospitalisation. (1/n)

#CovidIndia
Priority is to save lives. Do not waste crucial time in looking for a bed at a private hospital. Yes, the government hospitals may not offer the luxury that their counterparts run by private sector possess. (2/n)

#COVID19 #CovidIndia
But the treatment is very good in Govt. Hospitals (three of my close relatives who were critical recovered at some of these facilities) And the government has enough stock of Remdesivir and other drugs for now. (3/n)

#Thread on #TamilNadu politics

As many talk of recreating #MGR magic in 2021, here is a look at how the late matinee idol made his mark in politics.
He actually rose from the ranks in #DMK . One can argue it was a meteoric rise - yes it was within the party. #TamilNadu #AIADMK #Politics
#MGR did not come to power within months or years of taking the political plunge. He had 20 years of experience in politics when he launched his party, and he was a three-time MLA when he was sworn-in as CM. #TamilNadu #AIADMK #Politics

#Thread As the Supreme Court delivers its verdict on a petition challenging the Madras High Court scrapping land acquisition for #ChennaiSalemGreenCorridor , a re-plug of the long story that I wrote after visiting several villages and talking to farmers

deccanherald.com/salem-chennai-…
#ChennaiSalemGreenCorridor in a nutshell. The government's plans and the farmers' objections.
Ramalingapuram is a small village located on the existing highway between Chennai and Salem. Women from this village were the first to take to streets against the project. A school, and a temple were to be demolished for building the highway. #ChennaiSalemGreenCorridor

#Thread : For every political party or individual who wants to emerge as a "change agent" in #TamilNadu , the first thing to do is to acknowledge the role of the Dravidian parties in bringing social and developmental change in the state.
One cannot keep saying no development has taken place in #TamilNadu when there is no much to see around you. In cities, towns, and villages. When you keep shouting from the roof-top that there is no development, people tend to compare and look around.
When they compare the development, they look at states near-by and far-away. If one goes by that standard, all is well. More than well, actually. But if the change agents want a new culture to prevail and a new system to be in force, they need to say what is lacking now.

#Rajinikanth will not be the Chief Ministerial candidate, say people who are advising the star on his political entry. Who else will the superstar endorse? #KamalHaasan ? It may look like a wild guess, but such an endorsement would help the long-time friends.
#Rajinikanth and #KamalHaasan cannot succeed on their own. They can make an impact if they come together, feel many people who are pushing for an alternative to #DMK and #AIADMK . They also understand that the two coming together is not that easy.
#Rajinikanth announcing Ra. Arjunamurthy as chief coordinator of #RajiniMakkalMandram has surprised many including those in Kamal Haasan's party. The perception that the superstar is close to #BJP will make MNM wary of a tie-up with Rajinikanth's party.
