Anyone I have ever known in academia — humanities and sciences — would give anything to stress-test their field’s dominant paradigms as rigorously & imaginatively as Jones has.
It is a monumental achievement. The cries of dissent from towering American historians like Sean Wilentz are *proof* of what an visionary accomplishment the 1619 Project is. It has awoken the field “from its dogmatic slumbers” (as Hume said of Kant).
Are there really regular Joes, non-academics, non-researchers, walking along thinking, One thing I never want to have to do is question the American history I vaguely learned in third grade?! Do they feel the same about the Bohr Model? About Pluto’s status as a planet?
I can’t wait for her to get a dual appointment w/tenure, the Galileo Chair, & a laughably light teaching schedule at the École normale supériore & Magdalen College, Oxford so she never has to deal with drunk illiterate rightwing American censors again
