Any party that seeks to form government should be subject to the exact same level of scrutiny as the sitting government. As voters, we deserve a fulsome accounting of all our choices at the polling booth. 1/9
In recent years, this has not been happening. Journalists seem to have decided that a Liberal government is the enemy. For ownership reasons discussed in a previous thread. 2/8
But, in reality, this does Canadians a grave disservice. News media cannot reasonably turn a blind eye to the behaviour of other parties just because they are not in government. They want to be in government. They want to make decisions that will affect us all. 3/8
Do we not deserve to know as much about them as the sitting government? Do we not deserve to know if they are trustworthy? That they offer a commitment to our best interests? We should not have to vote blind, driven only by criticism of the current government. 4/8
And why do news media not cover successes of the current government? Who has seen any coverage of boil water advisories lifted? Just as an example. When have we seen successful vaccine negotiations celebrated? 5/8
Political parties have well-paid PR departments. Canadians do not need journalists to do that job. Journalists should not be stenographers and promoters to promote any party. Their job is to report the news and fact-check statements by politicians. 6/8
There should be no partisan filter. If a party does good, report it. If a party does bad, report it. But make sure you are accurate in your reporting. 7/8
We deserve so much better from our media. What has been happening recently is wrong and it sucks and we need to demand better. 8/8

We are in an age of rampant journalistic malpractice. There is a reason one of the first things an invader does is seize control of the media. We can't trust that our news media is not being manipulated. See my earlier thread re: vaccine deliveries. 1/7
Our media has been seized. Harper made it possible for a conglomerate of American right-wing interests to run most of our print, radio, and online news media. 2/7
This is a quiet hostile takeover of Canadian minds & votes. When you see an opposition MP make statements & these statements are demonstrably false, but news media does not challenge, this is subversion of democracy at work. Traditionally, journalists are 1st line of defense. 3/7

"The two pharmaceutical firms were originally scheduled to deliver two million shots in the next seven days, but shipped 1.4 million of those doses last week instead in anticipation of the May long weekend." We got them EARLY. And CTV is trying to make it sound bad. WTAF?
Here is an example of how our news media (which are mostly owned by conservative interests in the US) spin the news to affect people's perceptions. 2/7
Most people only read headlines. CTV can't actually just make stuff up and pass it off as news, but they can present information in such a way as to control what a majority of people will take away from the article. 3/7

First off, this is such an obvious crawl back because the previous post was ill-received. A bad mistake was made. People reacted. There is such a thing as letting it go. This is not that thing. 2/8
Responding with this, in the face of public outcry, is just cheesy and sad. "Oh, you didn't like that? Well, forget that, now there's this". 3/8

Yes, handing your spouse a beer can just be being nice. And we should all try to be nice to those we love. However, nothing the leader of the CPC posts is ever spontaneous 1/18
Let's just agree on that one point. Anything that appears on the social media accounts of the CPC leader has been crafted, discussed, and is based on PR theory. He's not just tweeting on a whim. They don't let him do that. 2/18
To be fair, the PM's social media feed is not spontaneous either. People in these positions in Canada have people who make sure they are on message. Even if they write things themselves from time to time, it is vetted. And that's reasonable. Look what Trump did with Twitter. 3/18

It's an old political ploy, giving people and ideas they don't like a negative name. Rather than answer the criticisms of the curriculum, they accuse critics of having nefarious motives. #abLeg #abpoli #cndpoli 1/25
The Calgary Chamber of Commerce supports paid sick leave. The Ontario Chamber of Commerce supports paid sick leave. Everyone not blinded by ideology can see that paid sick leave helps stop the spread of the virus. 2/25
And the virus must stop spreading before there can be any "economic recovery". Jason Kenney is speaking ideology that has no relationship with how the world actually functions. 3/25

Government budgets deal with money residents have contributed in their taxes. This is important to know. When a conservative government , federal or provincial, says "We have to cut funding for schools/social programs/health care" while giving big #cdnpoli

tax breaks/grants/bailouts to corporations, they are saying that they are taking our money & doing whatever they want with it. Seriously, what do we, as Canadians want more? For everyone to have health care when they need it, or for top execs at O&G companies to get bonuses? 2/20
When conservatives say that programs like CERB are too expensive and they will make workers lazy; when they suggest people should have to get back to work; when they support the owners of plants that are COVID hotspots instead of supporting the workers; 3/20
