Governor @GregAbbott_TX's decision is going to uproot the lives of thousands of children while pushing them into even more sub-standard conditions.
dallasnews.com/news/politics/…
@GregAbbott_TX This order is clearly another brazen attempt by Abbott to align himself with the former president, who endorsed his reelection yesterday, and demonize immigrants.

Meanwhile, Abbott is doing nothing to solve the problem of the Texas foster care system.
@GregAbbott_TX Abbott is using facilities housing migrant children as a diversion from his terrible governing.

If he cared about children in TX then he would spend money on child welfare rather than pouring tons of $ into an unnecessary armed response at the border to children seeking asylum.
@GregAbbott_TX Threatening facilities housing migrant children with human smuggling and human trafficking charges is despicable. This move proves the governor is hell bent on rewriting criminal laws and exploiting his powers to round up immigrant families and terrorize their communities.
@GregAbbott_TX Migrant children are already in a precarious situation and should not be used as political pawns to advance Abbott’s right-wing agenda.
@GregAbbott_TX This order is an immediate threat to the safety of thousands of children in Texas and shines a light on the urgent need for @POTUS to keep his promise to provide immediate protection to immigrant communities. #KeepThePromise

The world's 👀 are on Colombia 🇨🇴 as human rights violations rack up amidst peaceful protests.

26+ ppl killed by police
10+ cases of sexual assault
87+ disappearances

🚨 We urge @POTUS to denounce the situation & pressure @IvanDuque to cease the violence
washingtonpost.com/world/2021/05/…
To make matters worse, the ruling political party is asking the gov't to declare emergency powers to deal w/the protests, which they say have been infiltrated by illegal groups 🙄

That means taking control of radio/tv, restricting protests...censorship. elespectador.com/noticias/polit…
Let's picture the equivalent to that here in the U.S. ⬇️

Republicans calling for Trump to get emergency powers because....Antifa.

Not a good look, huh?

Each day, 600+ kids arrive at the 🇺🇸 🇲🇽 border w/o their parents.

Make no mistake, families don't make decisions like this lightly.

But ultimately, however dangerous the trek north may be...staying behind is, many times an assurance of violence and/or poverty.

A thread 🧵👇🏾
Upon arriving, unaccompanied children are supposed to be held in CBP custody for a max of 72 hrs after which they're sent to an Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) temporary shelter.

There, they wait to be reunified with a family member/sponsor. But that’s not the full story...
Inside influx shelters like Carrizo, our staff provides Know Your Rights presentations for kids.

Bc we believe it's imperative every child know their rights & have access to legal rep, as their time detained is coupled w/the start of deportation proceedings in immigration court.

Today our Director of Released Children’s Services is visiting the Carrizo Springs detention center along with members of Congress. We're currently providing the kids detained there with legal services.

As RAICES, we’ve been at the frontlines of this issue for many years.🧵👇🏽
Let us be clear: There is no “security crisis” or “surge” at the border. The situation we are facing is nothing new. Child migration and the numbers of kids we're seeing enter through the border is not unprecedented, unusual or surprising. Statistically this was very predictable.
The number of children coming into the US changes depending on the time of year.

This is normal. This is expected. This is something the government can prepare for.

🧵THREAD: TPS for Venezuelans

Any action to provide relief by the Biden admin is a welcome gesture that'll improve the lives of thousands of immigrants living in the U.S.

This shows us an admin willing to use Executive Action to provide relief to the immigrant community.
With this, we are aware that other countries are in dire need of TPS.

People from places such as Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala are unable to return, and require Executive relief as well.
And while TPS would be a huge boost to the lives of many immigrants, we must also seek permanent solutions for immigrants already in the U.S.

We demand that Congress take action immediately and provide permanent protection for TPS recipients.

To no surprise Operation Lone Star is Abbott's latest attack on the migrant community, an operation upholding racist rhetoric from the previous administration.

Abbott seems to be incapable of protecting Texans under a pandemic, yet highly skilled in criminalizing migrants. 🧵👇🏽
Under Operation Lone Star air, ground, marine and tactical border security units will be deployed to "high-threat areas for cartel activity and drug smuggling".

The data backing this increase of criminal activity seem to stem from Abbott claiming to know "cartel strategy".
Abbott's blatant hypocrisy of stalling efforts to approve federal funds for #COVID19 safety & lifting the mask mandate only supports the xenophobic characterization of immigrants as a risk to public health.

Which is what Title 42 is & what he's using to his political advantage.

A lot of folks may be celebrating the end of immigrant family detention centers.

We're here to tell you this simply isn't true.
sacurrent.com/the-daily/arch…
.@ICEgov is saying these facilities will simply become “3 day processing centers” for those given Notices to Appear (a charging doc initiating removal proceedings).

But we've been representing families inside of Karnes for years & can pretty much call BS on this.
For the past 3 years we’ve observed up close countless & frequent policy changes directly impacting the lives of people seeking safety, imprisoned by our gov't.

ICE can resume expedited removal & prolonged detention at any moment.

This is a glaring PR stunt by ICE.
