1/🧵@MattHancock just now in the Commons
Secondary students are seeing largest rise of Delta cases.
Children are much less likely to be harmed but they are "more transmissible"
Then he twice ignored questions about why masks have been removed in secondary
3/ Which is a bit odd seeing as I've been fed a daily diet of being told that there's no sign of meaningful transmission in schools and that children hardly transmit
Media have found lots of experts and pediatrics quite certain theres nothing to see here
4/ They are probably bashing away on keypads at this moment to explain why this is completely wrong, and that transmission in schools isn't really an issue
6/ It doesn't make sense that @MattHancock and gov adverts have made such a big deal about LFDs which although useful arent as vital a measure as masks, and he isn't even willing to answer questions to explain the govs logic
10/ Why weren't the trials acceptable for Alpha but they are now for Delta?
Vaccination?
I think they were worried about children transmitting into the community and increasing deaths
They are working on the idea the most vulnerable are double dosed so hope deaths stay low
11/ no concern for students and single dosed parents and staff, despite them knowing 1 dose has limited protection.
The thinking does seem to be that most vulnerable are double dosed, and single dosed and children have less risk anyway, so scrap masks and carry on with trials
12/ Although it doesn't account for risk of exponential growth, I understand why ppl think we could get back to normal once vulnerable are 2 dosed with more unlocking, however what I don't understand is taking unnecessary risks of increasing transmission in schools.
13/ Was scrapping masks to keep lobbyists happy? Appease CRG? For the impression safety to encourage adults to return to more normal spending habits?
Whatever the reason, their policies are too relaxed about infection in schools.
14/ But I'm sure the media will ignore all this and platform people who will keep telling us children are a lot less likely to transmit and there are no signs of transmission in schools
🧵Somehow in the UK we have a narrative that vaccines and masks are important for everyone except children.
Every hour experts and gov advisors are in the media claiming school arent really contributing to infection rates and arent driving Delta growth
How can children not be impacting infection rates when so many are being infected?
If over 40% of cases in my LA are in schools, how is that not significant? Local PH director says it is, PHE report says it is,yet PHE blog disagrees with own report? vip.politicsmeanspolitics.com/2021/06/05/bor…
3/ UK reports find infections high in children, other countries look at UK data as sign of the impact of schools on transmission, yet the reporting of these studies and data seems to completely minimise children's role in transmission.
While the Treasury baulks at the cost of lost learning, Johnson seems comfortable with Delta spreading in schools which will result in more disruption.
Whatever this government says education clearly isn't a priority
What's the bet that as B117 was falling in the community, it was in education where B1.617.2 was increasing.
And whilst they knew this, they still went ahead with removing masks and suppressing the data instead of acting. #edutwitter#ThirdWave
I think the government is hoping to obscure scale of the issue in schools and gamble that hospitalisations are still low by 14th June, they will announce further loosening but keep masks in certain places so they can claim this is a sign of caution
Cummings said the Telegraph kept swaying Johnsons mind.
This is definitely the case with school policy,
Been charting how the disinformation leads policy every month
Skeptics➡️contrarian blue ticks➡️ Telegraph&CRG➡️Johnson changes policy #edutwitter
Media have been most negligent about schools policy complicit in dismissing safety concerns, unfortunately schools were barely mentioned in the meeting. Id like to know what Gupta and Henegan advised on schools.
