🧵Somehow in the UK we have a narrative that vaccines and masks are important for everyone except children.

Every hour experts and gov advisors are in the media claiming school arent really contributing to infection rates and arent driving Delta growth Image
How can children not be impacting infection rates when so many are being infected?

If over 40% of cases in my LA are in schools, how is that not significant? Local PH director says it is, PHE report says it is,yet PHE blog disagrees with own report?
vip.politicsmeanspolitics.com/2021/06/05/bor…
3/ UK reports find infections high in children, other countries look at UK data as sign of the impact of schools on transmission, yet the reporting of these studies and data seems to completely minimise children's role in transmission.
4/ Longcovid in children seems to be marginalised by many experts particularly pediatrics, this is occuring in other Western countries as well.

"Balance of harms" keeps being mentioned, the anti-vaxers are having a field day on radio phone in on this.
5/ We were told Delta didn't have vaccine escape
We were told Delta wasn't more severe
We are still being told there won't be an increase in younger people being hospitalised.
It is more severe so surely unvaccinated groups will be hit harder than before?
6/ One thing the UK is particularly good at is data collection, the problem is how its then interpreted and acted on (or not) here.

ONS studies on #LongCovid are major studies yet seem to be regularly ignored.
7/But don't worry BBC headlines are comforting, unless you read the article.

Higher rates of hospitalisation in younger age groups, too early to know the scale we might see but we haven't seen a big Delta wave yet in a country with good data collection. ImageImage
9/ Which is why the data the government is collecting on Delta is of vital importance for the rest of the world

Think of countries with less vaccinated populations and less developed healthcare systems, how do we prevent more disasters like India & Nepal?
10/ The "balance of harms" argument for masks in schools wasn't based in science.

The argument children are so safe the vaccine would cause more harm also doesn't appear to match the analysis

Drosten in Germany is recommending vaccinations for children
11/ As happened in winter, the media still don't understand exponential growth, right now we have no idea what level of hospitalisation we will see in those with one jab.

1/🧵@MattHancock just now in the Commons
Secondary students are seeing largest rise of Delta cases.
Children are much less likely to be harmed but they are "more transmissible"

Then he twice ignored questions about why masks have been removed in secondary
2/ Higher transmissibility in school children

Higher transmissibility in school children!

No answer on masks

No answer on masks twice!
3/ Which is a bit odd seeing as I've been fed a daily diet of being told that there's no sign of meaningful transmission in schools and that children hardly transmit

Media have found lots of experts and pediatrics quite certain theres nothing to see here

Its like a PR spin doctor has been inserted into PHE to contradict the reports its staff have worked hard on.

This is preposterous

They quote data from March, ignore the data released yesterday which was only up to 11th May.

So this is before masks were removed in secondaries and wider restrictions were relaxed

While the Treasury baulks at the cost of lost learning, Johnson seems comfortable with Delta spreading in schools which will result in more disruption.

Whatever this government says education clearly isn't a priority

The government is suppressing data on Delta B1.617.2 cases in schools, this could have implications not just for the UK but for the rest of the world, and yet most our media are giving Johnson a free pass on this.

What's the bet that as B117 was falling in the community, it was in education where B1.617.2 was increasing.

And whilst they knew this, they still went ahead with removing masks and suppressing the data instead of acting.

I think the government is hoping to obscure scale of the issue in schools and gamble that hospitalisations are still low by 14th June, they will announce further loosening but keep masks in certain places so they can claim this is a sign of caution
Yet we still get voices in media claiming children are practically immune, that transmission is so low that UK schools don't need masks.

A lot of the world are shocked by the lack of measures in UK schools.

Cummings said the Telegraph kept swaying Johnsons mind.
This is definitely the case with school policy,
Been charting how the disinformation leads policy every month
Skeptics➡️contrarian blue ticks➡️ Telegraph&CRG➡️Johnson changes policy

You can see how disinformation becomes fact in RW media and then is adopted by others like BBC.

The push to remove masks, all evidence said keep them, but in the UK media masks are controversial
Media have been most negligent about schools policy complicit in dismissing safety concerns, unfortunately schools were barely mentioned in the meeting. Id like to know what Gupta and Henegan advised on schools.

Day masks are removed PHE, ventilation?
