This #weekend when you’re off to see your #family, hugging parent(s), having a pint with mates, pls spare a thought for hundreds of foreign #NHS doctors who’ve no family in the UK & are desperate to go home to see their parents/loved ones after 18 months of working non stop 1/n
This includes me, too. I haven’t seen my parents since Jan ‘20. This is the longest I’ve gone without seeing them. Even when living in Aus 🇦🇺 I used to fly home at least x2/year. We are a v close family and this has been the toughest thing to endure for all of us 2/n
It is incredibly difficult to hide your emotions on a video call when you see your parents getting older (comes as a shock every few weeks) & when they ask you ‘just come home we miss you’. You need to be strong for them and yourself and hv an ugly cry after hanging up 3/n
I’ve had dozens of int’l doctors (mostly frm South Asia) tell me how incredibly homesick & exhausted they are. I know drs who’ve decided to resign from their jobs & go back home as they can’t see the light at the end of this very dark tunnel. All this goes unacknowledged 4/n
While most ppl living in the UK are worried abt not being able to hv a holiday this yr, all we foreign #NHS drs want is to see our parents and family. No holiday, no beaches. Just want to hug our parents and never let go. Pls remember most Intl drs are frm #redlist countries! 5/n
The @ukhomeoffice needs to urgently review the prohibitive requirements for #NHS drs frm red & amber countries. We basically need to pay £££ to quarantine for days & then go into work the next day to be exposed to the virus all over again! How does that make any sense? 6/n
Pls keep in mind the huge #mentalhealth cost of these severe restrictions on foreign NHS drs who’ve worked flat out through the pandemic, are fully vaxxed & still unable to see their loved ones. Most of us hv elderly parents back home with not many ppl to look after them 7/n
Hundreds started their first UK/NHS job in August ‘19 with plans to visit home in 8-12 months time. It never happened. The number of drs telling me they feel ‘trapped’ here is alarming. Pls look after your IMG/foreign #NHS drs before it’s too late. Hv a lovely weekend ☀️! 8/8
