Finding your dream job often feels like finding a winning lottery ticket

But why should it feel that way?

Announcing the launch of the “gregslist” job board

I pick the most interesting jobs from the most interesting community based companies:
Here is the link:

pallet.xyz/list/gregslist/

Sharing is caring

The world needs more people working for community based companies (not less)
But why a job board for community based companies?

People don’t want to just work for ANY company

Soooo many people want to work for community-based product companies

And finding great opportunities is like looking for a black cat in a coal cellar
What’s a community based company?

Either:

1) The community is the product (think Twitter)
2) The community enhances the product (think Bitcoin)

My belief:

Community based companies outperform non-community based companies
How gregslist works

If you’re looking for a job:

I’ve already put up 75+ jobs for you to take a look at from companies like Notion to Reddit

Every Tuesday I’ll add more

I want to keep it fresh
Example of some cool jobs:

1) Data Engineer at Sago Mini, who are leaders in building community and fun for pre-schoolers

pallet.xyz/job/b364a94d-4…

2) Community/growth manager at Together, who are building co-living around shared interests

pallet.xyz/job/4ae43804-4…
How gregslist works if you’re hiring

1. Standard post ($250/month) - Your role will be live in the feed for 30 days

2. Featured post ($750/month) - Your role will sit at top of the feed, will be featured in the Late Checkout newsletter of ~20,000 subs

You will hire better
Summary:

- gregslist is the home for community based company jobs
- This is a job board for a new type of company
- It’s live and it’s already working!!
- I’d love your feedback

Have a look and share: pallet.xyz/list/gregslist/

I made some mistakes that cost me $75 million

Confession: I’ve passed on investing in 7 companies that are now worth billions

I let them slip away…

7 painful lessons learned (so you don’t have to make them):
The mistake: If I can’t go for a beer with the founder, I don’t want to invest in the startup

The truth: there are plenty of great businesses led by founders I wouldn’t want to spend my Saturday nights with

Point: you don't need to become BFFs with your portfolio
The mistake: “Invest in founders with pedigree”

The truth: experience + attitude is way more powerful than pedigree

I don’t care that you graduated from Harvard or worked at Facebook

Point: I care that you have the life experience and attitude that equips you to outperform

Elon Musk often talks about hiring job candidates for “clear evidence of exceptional ability”

But how do you identify exceptional potential employees?

13 non-obvious habits to look for in hiring high performing employees:
1/ People who take notorious notes

Notes notes. Even your notes should have notes

Notes are the closest thing that humans have to time travel

You'll miss a finite detail and the notes will help you remember instantly

If you want to be more focused, focus on note taking
2/ People with a strong self awareness to accept and manage feedback proactively

Low performers:
Can’t take feedback

Average performers:
Take feedback and attempt to integrate it

High performers:
Seek feedback and integrate it as essential to their success

Anyone else love a useful how-to?

I put together a mega-thread of mega-valuable how-tos that can transform your startup, career or life

All you have to do is read these 10 how-tos:
How to write a cold email:

- Be short
- Humanize it. Record a 60s selfie video
- Write a cold DM instead of a cold email if possible
- Never follow up by saying “just following up”
How to write copy that isn’t boring (and that sells):

- Don’t write copy, write stories
- Can be long or short, but must take you for a ride
- Focus entire story on the problem the customer has
- Share credibility
- Use inviting, warm words
- Create a clear call-to-action

Mental models are the secret to making the best out of the world around you

But there is a million of them...

A guide to my favorite mental models:
Marketing

Luck Surface Area:

“When you do something you’re excited about you will naturally pull others into your orbit.

The more people with whom you share your passion, the more who will be pulled into your orbit.”

Orbits are powerful in marketing, business or life
Sales

Hunting whales vs flies:

5 types of sales prospects

1) Whales
2) Elephants
3) Deers
4) Rabbits
5) Flies

How can you hunt 1,000 whales, 10,000 elephants, 100,000 deers, 1,000,000 rabbits or 10,000,000 flies?

Who do you want to hunt? Why?

Startups taught me more about life and business than I ever could imagine

Thread: 20 tips I wish I could give to my 20 year old self
Startups are simple:

There are good times and bad times

Good times: enjoy the ride
Bad times: enjoy the ride
Beware of pessimistic people

Pessimism is the worst disease

New bold experimental cities/communities will boom over the next 10 years

These new "startup anti-cities" will unlock so much potential

Stop and think about this:
The state of cities:

1. Cities are becoming more unequal
2. Cities are becoming unbearably expensive
3. Cities have seen a surge of crime
4. Many people feel foreign in their own city
5. Many people post-COVID are craving new life
experiences
6. Many people work remote
Bottom line:

New experimental cities are inevitable
