Technically, it's a defense mechanism where people unconsciously "project" negative thoughts/traits onto others. On the surface, it appears as hypocrisy. It can often be a confession of past/current behavior, or predictive of future behavior. ....1/
It's often a window into how someone engages/reacts to their environment. It's often indicative of someone who is hyper-subjective in how they see the world, and/or lacks ability conceptualize an alternate reaction in another person. Basically, the unconscious thought process: 2/
"Since this is how I would respond in this situation, everyone must respond the exact same way".

With Trump, since he views every situation as a transaction to exploit, lie, cheat, steal, he projects (subjectively interprets) that everyone else must be doing the same. 3/
Since it never occurs to him to act ethically/honestly/humanely/morally, his pathological subjectivity prohibits him from being able to understand or accept that other people would act ethically/honestly/humanely/morally. 4/
An example of this was when Trump was standing with John Kelly.... at the grave of Kelly's fallen son...., and Trump said: "I don't get it, what was in it for them". This was indicative of not only Trump's inability to grasp another person's honor/selflessness/patriotism...5/
...but it was also indicative of Trump's inability to grasp not only John Kelly's loss/pain, but also an inability to understand the contextual inappropriateness of the comment, or the effect his comment would have on Kelley. 6/
This inability to put themself in another person's shoes ("pathological subjectivity) is also a source of their lack of empathy:

Since they can't conceptualize another person's perspective/pain, at best, they're oblivious/indifferent to it.

And, at worst, they feed on it. 7/

An addiction model may actually explain tribalism, confirmation bias, and even conspiracy theories/Qanon. Let’s unpack….

Several years ago I started observing the parallels between addiction and political tribalism as marriages/friendships/families imploded over politics….1/
Specifically, I started noticing the parallels between the effect that addiction has on relationships when those relationships (interventions) threaten the continuation of the addictive behavior/activity.

Basically,….2/
…when confronted with a threat to the addiction, the addict will often cut the loved one out of their life, rather than cut out the addictive behavior.

This has occurred countless times over the last 5 years as people have cut family/friends out of their lives over politics. 3/

Not aware of studies, but I've written/talked about (Lincoln Project podcast) the "proxy phenomenon":

A transition from people acting as a proxy in an ideological war....to ideology becoming a proxy in those people's personal wars with ideological/political/personal enemies…1/
.....with the ideology increasingly becoming fluid. 3/

"The leaders of the Democratic Party no longer believe in democracy, & they definitely don't plan to lose another election..."

Incessant projection. This literally describes the Republican Party from the Big Lie...to Jan. 6th....to voter suppression laws.

This is one of...1/
...Carlson's go to moves: use actions the Right is engaging in to create a false equivalency...which paints the Right as the "victims"....and then retroactively "justifies" the Right's initial egregious actions.

Basically it's "pre-emptive retaliation": 2/

In Nov., Trump pushed election lies.

2 months later, the insurrection/first non-peaceful transition of power in U.S. history occurred.

Aside from August being 2 months away, there’s another dangerous parallel:

"Pathologically unrealistic expectations"

On election morning…1/
...I laid out a road map describing how Trump would manipulate/gaslight the election results to incite his base. Basically, it included
1.Create pathologically unrealistic expectations
2.Lie about the results
3.Incite people to react violently
