Mayor Naheed Nenshi is giving more details on how to celebrate Canada Day in Calgary. It starts with thousands of kits including things like a beach ball and sidewalk chalk that can help you mark the day. #yyc
There are also online kits (without the beach ball and chalk). Special show on CJSW on Jul. 1. Nenshi adds that, for the last time, he will push the "big button" to launch fireworks. They will be launched from Tom Campbell Hill, so it should be visible around most the city.
The fireworks will be launched at 11pm.
As that is the first day of loosened restrictions on Canada Day, Nenshi knows there will be mixed feelings. No large public events this year, hopes people stay safe. Wants people to reflect on the past 16 months and hold some hope for the future.
Nenshi says the "saddest thing" about the pandemic is he hasn't been able to oversee a citizenship ceremony, hopes there may be a virtual one on Canada Day that he could watch. Nenshi will attend some small events, but much less than past years.
Question from @AdamMacVicar about how to celebrate this in the wake of the discovery of unmarked graves at residential schools.

Nenshi says it's okay to have some conflicting feelings on the day. Lots of stories of success, but also lots of work to still be done.
.@CBCScott asks about guidance for people who may want to be in a big crowd.

Nenshi says we can maybe ease up a bit, you can pop in the businesses, walk with family or friends, but just be careful once again.
Nenshi adds that typically, he would attend a large pow wow on Canada Day and it's a big moment for education, hopes we can get back to that soon. But, you can explore the city or go around your neighbourhood.
.@meksmith about masks, have you had some contact with the province on things like wearing masks on transit.

Nenshi says he not aware of conversations, he was "surprised" about what Dr. Hinshaw said yesterday.
He says the announcement was good, but it was odd. Also a "bit disrespectful" to announce it while Edmonton was debating the bylaw at the same time.
I ask about conversations he's had with the premier about masks.

Nenshi says he's had some chats, didn't want the city to come off as a place that didn't understand the threat of COVID. Chats that Kenney referenced today apparently happened quite some time ago, though.
.@LiveWire_DK asks how business owners should grapple with this.

Nenshi says he doesn't think people are "so dumb" that they cannot comprehend different rules for different cities. He finds it "insulting" that it would be suggested people could get confused.
.@CameraGuyNick asks does the messaging around vaccines and first dose coverage add to the confusion?

Nenshi says there's a chance we could see a stall in people getting second doses, and that would be a problem. Fortunately, vast majority of people with one dose want the second

Starting soon, Premier Jason Kenney and Indigenous Relations Minister Rick Wilson will announce more details around the plan to search for unmarked graves at residential school sites in Alberta. Follow along here for details or watch live on our website. @660NEWS #ableg
We're now underway, with Wilson beginning the formal proceedings after a prayer from Chief Billy Morin.
Wilson says everyone was "deeply shaken" about the discovery of graves in Kamloops and in other places recently. He says truth must precede reconciliation, and that is why they are here today.

Calgary councillors are set to make a decision about the face coverings bylaw. During discussion this morning, councillors heard from Dr. Raj Bhardwaj and I have some more details here. #yyc #yyccc 660citynews.com/2021/06/19/cal…
Cllr. Farkas starts off this new round with an amendment. He is pushing for the city to repeal the bylaw on Jul. 1, wonders what the city knows that the province and the CMOH doesn't.

There are several options on the table for the bylaw, listed here. Image
"Let's embrace hope over fear," says Farkas. He adds that people can still wear masks on their own and businesses can set their own policies, even if the city repeals the bylaw.

Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi says "things are bad", as he gives an update on the local response to COVID-19. Highlighting a need for personal responsibility and discipline. #yyc
Starts with a story about a friend who recently got a vaccine, but before it was fully effective they caught the virus. They have been in the ICU for six days.

He also has a friend in India who caught one of the variants, amid the horrendous outbreak over there.
But something to keep in mind: the infection rate in India is half of what is is Calgary. "It is absolutely critical for all of us to manage this with incredible vigour."

He now lambastes the "maskless idiots" who continue to hold protests. He knows it's "maddening."

The City of Calgary is announcing how it will further support citizens, businesses and city operations with COVID-19 funding. #yyc Image
This money comes from $202 million in multi-government funding aimed at supporting the community. Some money was spent last year, much more to be spent this year.
This list also shows some of the initiatives already taken. Image

The Alberta Teachers' Association is calling for a moratorium on the province's draft K-6 curriculum. ATA President Jason Schilling will be speaking more about this soon, and will have details in this thread. #yyc #yeg #ableg
Schilling starts us off. Just beginning with a summary of the press release above. He says there has been a lot of discussion on the curriculum lately, with an "overwhelming message that this curriculum is not fit for students."
He says it is poorly structured, full of random facts, and isn't appropriate for some age groups. Also there is a distinct lack of enough Indigenous education. He says it will cause kids to get frustrated with learning, and cause more issues down the road.
