Derek Chauvin has been sentenced to 22.5 years in prison for the murder of George Floyd.

But criminal justice experts don’t think that alone signals that America will start holding cops accountable for misconduct.

Ayesha Bell Hardaway, an assistant professor at the Case Western Reserve University School of Law and director at the Social Justice Law Center, said only systemic reform can prove that America has turned the corner when it comes to taking police brutality seriously. Text graphic that features a quote from Ayesha Bell Hardaway
A jury found Chauvin guilty of second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and manslaughter after being presented evidence that he used excessive force by kneeling on Floyd’s neck for 9 minutes and 29 seconds while he begged for his life.

A day before Chauvin was sentenced, Hennepin County Judge Peter Cahill denied Derek Chauvin’s request for a new trial.

insider.com/derek-chauvin-…
Bell Hardaway feels like too much of the conversation around Chauvin’s actions were framed around him being a “bad apple” and not representative of police conduct as a whole.

Attorney Eric D. Anderson, a senior trial attorney at Early Sullivan Wright Gizer & McRae, also feels that the decades Chauvin faces behind bars might not mean much in terms of far-reaching accountability.

Anderson said that most defendants in Minnesota will serve about 66% of their sentence before they are released.

The maximum amount of time Chauvin could have been sentenced to was 40 years in prison.

Members of George Floyd’s family, including his brother and 7-year-old daughter, gave impact statements at Chauvin’s sentencing.

Floyd’s uncle, Selwyn Jones, told Insider that his nephew’s death propelled him into activism.

Judge Peter Cahill also heard from Chauvin’s mother, Carolyn Pawlenty, who spoke in support of her son for the first time publicly.

Her comments didn’t address the Floyd family and only spoke about how her son’s sentence would affect him and herself.
insider.com/video-derek-ch…
Anderson said there are a lot of people like Pawlenty who don’t believe Chauvin should have ever been tried.

He said that her comments left him little hope that society was changing.

Queer inclusion in kids' cartoons has skyrocketed throughout the past decade. Here’s how shows evolved from Hays Code-era stereotypes and queer-coded villains to airing openly queer characters in groundbreaking wins for #LGBTQ visibility.

In 2018, @rebeccasugar's "Steven Universe" featured both the first LGBTQ wedding and the first LGBTQ marriage proposal in a kids' animated TV show. 👰‍♀️🤵‍♀️

And in 2020, Benson from "Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts" was the first kids' animated character to directly identify themselves as gay. Both were groundbreaking achievements in LGBTQ representation. 🌈✨

But the lake is shrinking fast amid a severe drought and is predicted to reach a record low this summer.

Droughts are common in California.

But this year's is much hotter and drier than others, evaporating water more quickly from the reservoirs and the sparse Sierra Nevada snowpack that feeds them.
