Psaki, on strikes on Iraq/Syria border: The president's view is that it was necessary, appropriate and deliberate action, and the strikes were designed to limit risk of escalation..
Psaki: We continue to believe &never held back from noting that Iran is a bad actor in the region
At same time, we feel we are moving forward & seek opportunity to move forward on negotiations to prevent Iran from ever obtaining a nclr weapon.

Psaki, asked if US looking to post JCPOA talks to deal with UAV threat from Iran-backed militias in Iraq:
I would say as it relates to responding to attacks on men & women serving, threats to our facilities in region, don’t see that as on the same exact track.
Our objective is to de-escalate.....
But will respond to threats on our interests
Psaki: US selected these targets because Iran backed militias used them to conduct at least five UAV attack since April...Selected these targets in response to those five attacks

🧵 New from me: US: Still ‘serious differences’ to resolve for Iran deal, talks won’t go on indefinitely

diplomatic.substack.com/p/us-still-ser…
While the US considers the outcome of Iran’s recent election “pre-manufactured,” it “does not affect our determination to try to reach a deal or the pace at which we will go about pursuing it,” senior State Dept official said. diplomatic.substack.com/p/us-still-ser…
US official pressed for follow-on talks, and said it would seem they would be in Iran’s interests too, “because they have issues that they’re going to want to bring to the table.” diplomatic.substack.com/p/us-still-ser…

Snr State Dept official says Iran deal not done: Still have serious differences with Iran, incl. on nuclear steps Iran needs to take to come back into compliance, & on sequence of steps by both sides that would need to be taken. Nothing agreed til everything agreed. 1/
Still issues that need to be resolved. Not there yet, and he will not speculate as to if and when we will get there.
On impact of Iran elections,...from our point of view, it does not affect our determination to try to pursue a deal or pace we go about pursuing it.
On Iran asking for assurances the US won't quit deal again, senior State Dept official says: there is no such thing as a guarantee. We know it, Iran knows it. ...Best guarantee is to get back into the deal and implement it faithfully.

State Dept spokesman Ned Price says he does not have anything to say on the alleged US govt seizure of Iran Press TV website domain, but says he thinks the Department of Justice may have something to provide on that shortly
It has been almost two hours since @StateDept said @TheJusticeDept should be able to provide some info on this shortly, but they have not said anything, despite multiple inquiries. Baffling.
A CNN Justice Dept correspondent cites an unnamed US “national security official,” presumably from @TheJusticeDept, saying the US seized dozens of US website domains connected to Iran. cnn.com/2021/06/22/pol…

Prominent Iranian reformist commentator tells #ACMideast event that Raisi press conference earlier today was a disaster. That he seemed unprepared for obvious questions, and answered as if he was still a judiciary chief.
Zibakalam says some reformists think silver lining of Raisi taking presidency is that now hardliners control every power center & have no one else to blame. Said they had already been making important strategic decisions and sending Mr. Rouhani the bill
.@borzou references FP piece foreignpolicy.com/2021/06/19/the… assessing Raisi as more of an opportunist than ideologue. But Borzou says, as we know from recent US experience to, right wing opportunists just as dangerous as right wing ideologues.

🧵Jerusalem Post: Former Mossad Chief Tamir Pardo today “said it was a massive strategic error for Netanyahu to be in open conflict with the Obama and Biden administrations over Iran.” jpost.com/middle-east/ir… by @jeremybob1
Pardo “said that Netanyahu’s policy had helped push the Trump admin to leave the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, which now has led to Tehran passing the 60% nuclear enrichment level.”
He accused Netanyahu of having “top notch tactics, but zero strategy.” jpost.com/middle-east/ir…
btw, re: Pardo, Sen. Tim Kaine recounted at SFRC hearing yesterday Netanyahu trying to cancel a congressional delegation briefing with Pardo, and then-SFRC chief Corker threatening to cancel all their other meetings in Israel if Netanyahu did not let it proceed. It did.

The second Iranian presidential debate that just finished was very boring, says @fresh_sadegh, at SAIS Rethinking Iran panel. She got sense the candidates were cautioned from somewhere to stick to the framework, few of them directly answered the questions asked of them.
Many people are indifferent to this election, @fresh_sadegh says. Polls suggest maybe 40% turnout. A lot of reasons, main one: people are disappointed, don’t expect any change from the candidates put on the table. Of 7 approved candidates, none of them really represent different
groups of people. Economic problems, add to problems that already exist in society people.
