1/6 #Libya: We are back in our meetings in the #LPDF. For those interested, I will reflect here on my experiences to the extent I am allowed to do so by the confines of the Code of Conduct.
2/6 Today we heard the suggestions of the Advisory Committee - there is much to discuss in the coming days but one thing that is clear is that we did not learn from our mistakes where it comes to eligibility criteria.
3/6 One criterion is that the candidate "has not been convicted of corruption or violation of #HumanRights or international humanitarian law in a final judgment and in a fair trial".
4/6 This criterion would mean that those who have been indicted or are being investigated (or even convicted but still have a right of appeal) can run for the highest office in the country.
5/6 This is a criterion that has been created with the perpetrators in mind, and not their victims.
Is this the basis on which we want to build our country: by appeasing those who commit violations over protecting those who are violated by them?
6/6 I hope that I will not be alone when I push for criteria that vet out those who are implicated in the worst crimes.

1/4 I feel another special episode of @libyamatterspod coming looking at the perils of a "cut and paste" approach to mediation by @unsmil lacking contextual understanding of the situation in #Libya peppered with a good dose of mansplaining on how the international system "works".
2/4 Confusing reopening agreed points and questions outside the #LPDF's mandate with a "general debate" we are now left with 1.5 days to re-agree everything as everything has been put on the table and the opportunity to table more proposals appears to still be open.
3/4 Again, this comes to questions of due process. The deficit created by the lack of terms of reference for the LPDF or a proper decision making mechanism from the first rounds, has created an environment that empowers those seeking a political deal above all else.
