📣 WOOT!! One of the best birthday presents I could ask for: @CMSGov throws out a bunch of Trump's rancid #NBPP2022 turkeys!!
acasignups.net/21/06/28/break…
Some of you may remember last winter I was freaking out trying to get people to post public comments opposing some last-minute time bombs that Trump's CMS Admin tried to plant on her way out the door.

The comment project was great but she shoved them through anyway....
...FORTUNATELY, the Biden Admin grabbed them and stopped them in their tracks anyway, and is now officially flushing them down the drain.

Last week SCOTUS saved the ACA; today CMS reversed some peripheral damage before it started. Mazel Tov to @SecBecerra & @BrooksLaSureCMS!
Among other changes:
1. Trump Admin gutted the federal ACA Navigator program; Biden Admin is restoring it.

2. Trump Admin slashed the Open Enrollment Period from 92 to 45 days; Biden Admin is extending it back out to 76 days.
3. Trump Admin slashed HCgov user fees to the bone; Biden Admin is partially restoring them in order to properly fund the exchange's outreach/info & navigator program.
4. HUGE: Trump Admin tried to let states COMPLETELY PRIVATIZE the ACA exchange (ie, it would let them eliminate HC.gov altogether & turn it over to private brokers exclusively); Biden Admin putting the kibosh on that. 👏👏👏
5. HUGE: Trump Admin tried to codify his bastardization of the ACA's Section 1332 Waiver provision, which would have potentially allowed (among many other things) ACA subsidies to pay premiums on NON-ACA plans (ie, #ShortAssPlans, etc)...thus defeating the whole point of the ACA.
6. HUGE: Trump Admin wanted to require insurance carriers to send a SEPARATE INVOICE FOR ABORTION COVERAGE (i.e., the $1/month "segregated" fee which every #ACA enrollee has to pay if their policy covers abortion claims). Biden Admin putting kibosh on separate invoice.
7. NEW *AND* HUGE: Biden Admin is creating a new monthly Special Enrollment Period specifically for those earning less than 150% FPL! (continued...)
...If I understand this correctly (?), it basically means that those earning <150% FPL would be able to enroll in #ACA exchange plans *year-round* like they can for Medicaid, MinnesotaCare in MN, the Essential Plan in NY and ConnectorCare in MA.
While I’m at it, here’s the OTHER half of the #NBPP2022 rule from April: acasignups.net/21/05/10/cms-r…

(sigh) This semantic parsing over the word "access" when it comes to healthcare has really gotten on my nerves over the years. 1/
Yes, there HAVE been times when it's used in a cynical/doublespeak way, usually by Republicans , who usually use it in the sense that "Anyone can go to the Emergency Room!" 2/
The response to THAT usage is usually to make a sarcastic metaphor like "Everyone has *access* to a Porsche in the sense that they're allowed to buy one, but that doesn't mean they can afford to!" 3/

HOWEVER...

📣 Old 'n Busted: Medicaid/CHIP enrollment breaks 80 million. New Hotness: Medicaid/CHIP enrollment breaks 88 million? acasignups.net/21/06/23/old-n…
Back in January, @xpostfactoid noted that total Medicaid enrollment in the U.S. had likely broken 80 million people. xpostfactoid.blogspot.com/2021/01/medica…
This was unofficially confirmed by @philgalewitz of @KHNews a couple of weeks ago...

📣 NEW: With Missouri apparently being the first state to see a major #DeltaVariant surge, I decided to run a SECOND county-level scatter plot to compare vaccination levels (left) versus new cases per 1,000 residents (since June 1st). Yowza.
It's impossible to make out most of the county names, but all 11 of the circled counties on the left can be found in the circled part of the blob on the right.
The 11 counties with the highest new case surges range from 23% - 32% fully vaccinated.

All 6 of the counties in the blue/purple regions range from 37% - 46% fully vaccinated.

I've only run the new case graph for one state so far.

⚠️ Thanks @SuMoh7 & @VABVOX for the heads up: This should be obvious, but it’s good to have the hard data: rollingstone.com/politics/polit…
📣📣 “An Associated Press analysis of available government data from May shows that “breakthrough” infections in fully vaccinated people accounted for fewer than 1,200 of more than 853,000 COVID-19 hospitalizations. That’s about 0.1%.”
📣📣 “And only about 150 of the more than 18,000 COVID-19 deaths in May were in fully vaccinated people. That translates to about 0.8%, or five deaths per day on average.”
