In the nearly six months since the Jan. 6 attack, the FBI’s unprecedented manhunt for Capitol insurrectionists has been aided by a motley crew of online sleuths keeping the feds on their toes.

Here’s my look inside the #SeditionHunters network. #OSINT
huffpost.com/entry/sedition…
“You can get really deep in there and addicted. You can spend hours going down this rabbit hole.” huffpost.com/entry/sedition…
The Domino’s Tracker, but for FBI tips. huffpost.com/entry/sedition…
“Once I had to open up a spreadsheet so I could keep track of everything, suddenly it felt less like an online adventure game and more like an occupation.” huffpost.com/entry/sedition…
Yet another example, from today, of the FBI following the lead of the #SeditionHunters community:
"On February 10, 2021, the FBI received a tip that originated from a group known as the Sedition Hunters…"

Yet another case with #SeditionHunters origins. I heard about this one in March. Chase Kevin Allen was arrested in Seekonk, Massachusetts, today. (H/T @JustinRohrlich)
A sedition hunter told me in March that the Chase Allen case was "low hanging fruit, so it didn't take a huge amount of sleuthing.” Turned out Allen had some FBI interactions… on Jan. 7. #bostonwhitebeanaom documentcloud.org/documents/2098…

My book (working title: Sedition Hunters) will examine how the sprawling FBI manhunt for the Capitol rioters, aided by a smorgasbord of tech-savvy sleuths, will reshape the bureau and 21st century law enforcement.

The FBI has enlisted the public’s help in manhunts since its foundation (sometimes for good, sometimes… not so much). But the Capitol riot investigation is truly a pivot point for a bureau and the federal government’s approach to domestic terrorism. huffpost.com/entry/sedition…
A partial peek at the research hoard. What other FBI-centric books am I missing? Image

New Capitol case: Timothy Hart, who stormed the Capitol in a Q shirt and pushed up against the barricades during the initial breach, was arrested in Ohio.
A FBI affidavit line that never fails to crack me up: "Based on my training experience, I know that marijuana is commonly referred to as weed…”
"The video shows HART pushing the barricade and eventually going around it towards the Capitol… helping to push the barricades until the crowd successfully pushed the barricades against the officers.”

This is a remarkable work of journalism. Take the time to watch it.
Featuring an appearance from #FacePaintBlowHard Sam Lazar (a devotee of Trump and Pennsylvania state Sen. Doug Mastriano) screaming “LET’S GET THEIR GUNS!” huffpost.com/entry/samuel-l…

Here’s a Capitol update that #seditionhunters have been waiting for: Gabriel Brown — who repeatedly said his name and even signed it — has been arrested. He was FBI 204-AOM and #IAmGabeBrownPB.

BREAKING: A man in the Oath Keeper stack has testified before a grand jury under a plea deal with the federal government that includes a cooperation component. Mark Grods is in court this afternoon. huffpost.com/entry/mark-gro…
"Delaying the government’s need to notify other defendants about Mark Grod’s related case… will ensure the defendant’s safety while he cooperates pursuant to his plea agreement and testifies before the grand jury.” huffpost.com/entry/mark-gro…
Grods will admit he entered the Capitol rotunda carrying a large stick moments after others he’d traveled with entered and assaulted law enforcement. huffpost.com/entry/mark-gro…

Back in January, when the feds first charged Michael Foy with attacking officers with a hockey stick during the Capitol attack, they said they found him through "open source research.” Now, in discovery, they disclose a facial recognition search.
They don’t disclose the name of the facial recognition software in the discovery letter, but you can tell from the affidavit that it scrapes public Facebook photos and you can make an educated guess. justice.gov/opa/page/file/…
So in a addition to finding a violent insurrectionist off his girlfriend’s Instagram, the feds got a violent insurrectionist off his dad’s Facebook page. huffpost.com/entry/facial-r…
