.. from the enemy and turning it on them.
Though severely wounded, he refused to be evacuated so that he does not reduce the numbers available for the fight, by diverting them to take him to safety.
Instead he kept on fighting till the time he could.

#ObituaryOfTheDay
Soon thereafter he succumbed to his injuries, right there on his final battlefield.
This 24 year son of an SBI employee, had done what under normal circumstances, might have been considered impossible.
But circumstances that summer were far from 'normal'.

It was yet another small step in Indian Army's steady march towards the Line of Control, paved by the blood of yet more young men whom delusional Brown Panted Pakistani Generals had failed to take into account as they fantasized about glory in Kargil & Siachen

Young Clifford, a keen footballer and an excellent boxer, had put his stamina and skills to brilliant use on a hill so obscure that it didn't even have a name, just called by its map depiction - Pt 4812.
11
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Yet it was important enough to him to merit a suicidal climb and a mad charge.
And these were men who did it with a smile.
God Bless Capt Clifford his men that defied all odds to evict the enemy from THEIR land that summer.

Brig Mohd Usman, Naushera ka Sher.
Martyred in the thick of battle this day 73 yrs ago Image
2
#ObituaryOfTheDay
He was commanding the Indian Army Brigade in Jhangar, riding on a high of brilliant victories recently in this war in a sector that had only seen one setback after another thus far.
The victory at Naushera had already earned him the name, Naushera Ka Sher. Image
3
#ObituaryOfTheDay
However, a badly stung enemy was about to launch a final, desperate effort to wrest the lost territory from Brig Usman.
4
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Early in July 1948, tempo of enemy activities around Jhangar had increased.
Recce reports indicated that he'd brought up artillery guns to pound Jhangar.
5
#ObituaryOfTheDay
At about 1840Hr on 03 Jul 1948, the bombardment started, with four shells landing in the North-West of the camp. Next moment eight more shells landed right into the gun area.
6
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Brig Usman, who was sitting under a rock near his HQ,called his chief gunner & ordered him to engage Pt.3150 with guns immediately.
The chief gunner was surprised when asked to engage a point in the West when enemy guns were firing from South & South-West.
7
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Brig Usman repeated his orders.
Only then the chief gunner realised that Pt 3150 was the obvious place where enemy could place an observation post & have a direct view of the Camp as well as those places where shells were falling.
8
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Usman's eight guns engaged the target & enemy shelling stopped.
Usman took advantage of this lull to move from the rocks to a bunker.
As he was entering the bunker, a 25 pounder shell landed near him, killing him & wounding another officer & two other ranks.
9
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Thus fell Brigadier Mohammad Usman, 'Naushera Ka Sher', in a blaze of glory, less than two weeks shy of his 36th birthday.
10

Ironically, his last signal message received by the Army HQ in response to a query about his well being by his family contained a characteristically cheerful reply - 'Fit and flourishing, still in the world of the living.'

Capt Manoj Kumar Pandey, Param Vir Chakra (Posthumous), captor of Khalubar, breathed his last this day in 1999 on the treacherous slopes of 'Bunker Complex', paving the path to further glory for his comrades with his blood in the process. Image
2
#ObituaryOfTheDay
His last words, his last order to his men in fact, sum up the kind of man he was. "Na Chhornu" (Don't Spare Them), he commanded his equally brave Gorkha brothers.
And boy, did they follow up their fallen commander's last orders to the 'T'!
3
#ObituaryOfTheDay
No prisoners were taken by those maddened hill people that night.
Each & every Packie facing them in Khalubar that night was dispatched to his maker. Thus ended the 24 yr and 8 day long journey of this immortal soul in this world.
4
#ObituaryOfTheDay
However, he wasn't the only one to fall that night. Young Capt Manoj fell not very far from the body of Rifleman Arun Kumar, who too made the supreme sacrifice, providing the all important covering fire to his commander.

#ObituaryOfTheDay
On 05 Jul 1971, he moved out with a column of 60 men, to raid a hostiles' camp.
They reached their objective after a gruelling 12 hour march over difficult mountainous terrain. As they approached the target, he divided his men into different parties ..
3
#ObituaryOfTheDay
.. and attacked the camp from two different directions.
When Capt Mahra was just 30m short of the camp, the insurgents opened accurate fire.
Retaliating immediately, he charged at the camp, firing his weapon.
4
#ObituaryOfTheDay
He shot dead the insurgents in front of him but sustained serious injuries.
Despite profuse bleeding, he continued to encourage his men to charge at the camp.
Inspired by the courageous action of their leader, the men executed a gallant charge.

#ObituaryOfTheDay
Seeing the above obit got me thinking.
The #KargilWar was more than a month and a half old. These men, and others like them who lived to tell their stories, must have been in atleast a couple of major attacks / skirmishes if not more, by now.
3
#ObituaryOfTheDay
They would have been under devastating fire on a number of occasions, not just when in an assault, but also from enemy artillery.
They would have seen dead enemy soldiers from close quarters and realized they too were fellow humans mostly just following orders
4
#ObituaryOfTheDay
They would have seen their comrades and leaders fall, mortally wounded.
They would have prepared their mortal remains for the journey back home.
Before seeing them off, they would have prayed to Durga Mata to give them their well earned moksh.
5
#ObituaryOfTheDay
And then they would have gone right back into battle.
It was nearly two months since the patrol of Capt Saurabh Kalia went missing.
It was more than a month since the news of their mutilated bodies being returned by a cocky enemy would have reached them.
6
#ObituaryOfTheDay
It was nearly two months since they themselves would have been engaged with the enemy in Khalubar and thereabouts.
It was nearly two months WITHOUT A SINGLE DAY OF REST.
It was nearly two months WITHOUT ANY WEEKEND.
7
#ObituaryOfTheDay
It was nearly two months since they would have actually slept on a proper bed with a mattress.
It was nearly two months instead since they would have been sleeping behind the largest rock they could find so that a stray enemy shell doesn't account for them.
8
#ObituaryOfTheDay
It was nearly two months since they would have had any sort of break, be it during day or during night
It was two months since they had been living in the very shadows of death
It was two months since they had been regularly cheating death, even as others fell
9
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Not just content with cheating death, it was nearly two months since they were regularly mocking it in the face and daring it to claim them even as they went about ridding their Motherland of the unwanted infestation from across.
10
#ObituaryOfTheDay
It was nearly two months since they had been willingly going to sure-shot deaths heroically and steadfastly, without any fuss.
Let me say it again - NEARLY TWO MONTHS.
Let that sink in a bit.
11
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Yet they carried on, spurred by the prayers of an entire Nation.
This, when lesser mortals like us in other walks of life would have simply given up and quit.
12
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Seeing this obit, it just makes me wonder what kind of men these would have been.
There didn't seem to be any fatigue of war anywhere in the Indian Army.
13/13
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Day after day, night after night, they walked up those jagged slopes, sparring with the enemy - putting their very lives on the line.
Thank God for such men.
Thank God they were willing to give it their all.
Thank God they walked amongst us.
Om Shanti ..

Went down in a blaze of glory in Tithwal this day 73 yrs ago. Here's his story .. Image
2
#ObituaryOfTheDay
His battalion had been tasked to secure two major features critical to continue further ops by Indian Army in the sector.
His 'D' Company launched its attack at 0130Hr.
Enemy was strongly entrenched, knowing the importance of those features.
3
#ObituaryOfTheDay
The path leading to the forward positions of the feature entrusted to Piru Singh was about 1m wide with sheer falls on either side.
From five well sited bunkers along this narrow path, enemy covered the approach he knew the Indian soldiers would HAVE to take.
4
#ObituaryOfTheDay
As 'D' Company advanced along this path, it was subjected to heavy automatic fire: three MMGs fixed on this bottleneck, supported by small arms fire, hand & rifle grenades, 2-inch & 3-inch mortars.
5
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Terrific fire pinned down own troops.
Within 30 minutes the company suffered 51 casualties, despite the cover of darkness.
It was at this moment of crisis that CHM Piru Singh Shekhawat earned his place in history.
6
#ObituaryOfTheDay
He personally led the leading section, more than half of which had been mowed down by enemy fire.
He rushed forward to deal with the nearest MMG post that had been playing havoc with his men.
7
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Enemy grenade splinters ripped thru his clothes and wounded him. But he pushed on, dispatching the crew of the offending MMG with his sten gun, even putting his bayonet to good use.
By this time all his companions lay behind him, dead or wounded.
8
#ObituaryOfTheDay
This bunker cleared, he moved on towards the next MMG bunker, hurling grenades.
In doing so, an enemy grenade thrown at him wounded him in the face.
Yet this blood soaked soldier from the lands of the Rajputs, pushed on, clearing this bunker too.
9
#ObituaryOfTheDay
After silencing the second bunker, CHM Piru Singh, all alone in this sea of uniformed men, all unfriendly, doggedly charged on.
As he was rushing towards the third one, an enemy bullet hit him in the head and he was seen falling at the edge of the third trench
10
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Even though dead, Piru Singh wasn't quite done with the job he had taken upon himself.
11
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Soon there was an explosion inside the trench, indicating that his last grenade too had done its work.
(Incidentally, 51yrs later, a young Manoj Pandey too would fall in much the same way, his last grenade too doing a similar work even after he was martyred)
12
#ObituaryOfTheDay

2Lt Rajeev Sandhu, Maha Vir Chakra (Posth), Seventh Battalion The Assam Regiment
Earned a warrior's death this day in 1988 in Sri Lanka.
Here's his story .. Image
2
#ObituaryOfTheDay
This day in 1988, this 21 yr old was leading a convoy from Madurengkenikulam to Mangani to collect rations for his battalion when they were ambushed.
He was in the leading jeep which was hit by an RPG round right at the beginning of the ambush, lifting it up..
3
#ObituaryOfTheDay
.. and toppling it to a side. This was followed by a furious volley of fire from the LTTE militants.
This was one convoy that both sides, Indians as well as LTTE, knew would never make it to its destination.
4
#ObituaryOfTheDay
The LTTE militants soon came out to pick up weapons, ammo and equipment of the Indian soldiers.
However, unknown to them, 2Lt Rajeev still breathed, and had managed to drag himself, unseen, to a firing position nearby, despite his legs having been crushed ..
5
#ObituaryOfTheDay
.. in the initial RPG blast, and wounded further in the firing that followed.
One LTTE militant, named Kumaran approached the mangled jeep with his comrades to loot whatever he could.
6
#ObituaryOfTheDay
As he came near, 2Lt Rajeev lifted his carbine with his blood soaked hands and sprayed Kumaran with hot lead, killing him instantly.
And this, when Rajeev could have safely stayed hidden and hoped to live.
Instead, he chose to avenge his comrades.
7
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Soon a fierce firefight followed, with entire LTTE ambush party on one side and a lone, mortally wounded young 'Rhino' warrior from the Land of Five Rivers on the other, hell bent on making them pay for killing his brothers from the 'Seven Sisters' of the NE.
8
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Needless to say, 2Lt Rajeev, the only son of Mr DS Sandhu of Chandigarh, was soon dead in far away Sri Lanka, four months short of his 22nd birthday.

A josh box.
Bravest of the Brave.
Went down guns blazing this day in 1997.
Here's the young martyr's story .. Image
2
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Lt Puneet was born on 29 Apr 1973, to Maj Pramod Nath Datt of 1/11 Gorkha Rifles and Mrs Anita Datt.
Even as a child, his aim was clear - To join the army. More specifically, to join his father's Paltan - 1/11 Gorkha Rifles.
3
#ObituaryOfTheDay
He worked hard towards making that dream come true.
An excellent trainee, he excelled while in NDA & later, the IMA Image
4
#ObituaryOfTheDay
He achieved his aim when he was commissioned into 1/11 GR in Dec 1995, and moved to Palampur to join his battalion.
A josh box, he'd already proved himself as an excellent leader during his training days. Image
5
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Here too, he carried on in the same zeal, at the same time commencing a love affair with his Enfield. He and his bike travelled up and down the hills, mostly so that a deeply religious Puneet could pay obeisance at the temples that abound in the region.
6
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Then there was the one time when reckless abandon of invincible youth took him on a 12hr nonstop ride from Palampur to Delhi when proceeding on leave!
Happy days in the hills finally came to an end and the Paltan moved to the Valley in the thick of CI Ops.
7
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Here again, Puneet was in his element, carrying out successful ops one after another.
However, his moment of glory would come on 20 July 1997 when he & his Gorkhas managed to hole up a group of foreign terrorists in a building in Naoshera locality of Srinagar.
8
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Unsurprisingly, this intelligence too had been generated by Lt Puneet Nath Datt himself, via the excellent intelligence network he had created in the area.
The op commenced at 0400Hr in morning. It was a three storied building in a thickly populated area.
9
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Adding to the defensibility of the building was a thick boundary wall running all around it.
At daybreak, terrorists realized they were surrounded. Disregarding appeals to surrender, they opened indiscriminate fire.
10
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Puneet and his boys had to exercise utmost restraint to prevent collateral damage, making good use of the compound wall for cover.
Sensing that the house afforded excellent protection to the terrorists, Puneet left his cover and blew a hole in the house ..
11
#ObituaryOfTheDay
.. using an explosive charge. This enabled own troops to now fire inside the house. Sensing that his game was up, a terrorist tried to make a break for it and rushed out of the house, firing at own troops.
12
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Realizing the imminent danger, Puneet ordered his men to lay low and sprang up to face the terrorist.
In a most audacious eyeball to eyeball encounter, Puneet shot dead the terrorist at near point blank range.
13
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Keeping an eye on the situation, he maneuvered his troops to the rear of the building and killed another militant trying to escape from an opening that the militants had created over there.
14
#ObituaryOfTheDay
However, just as he dispatched this one, the third militant opened up fire on him from a window above, hitting Lt Puneet Nath Datt in his face.
But this young warrior still retained his senses and managed to lob a grenade through the same window from which ..
15
#ObituaryOfTheDay
.. the terrorist had shot him.
This grenade not only killed the last terrorist, but also set off the huge cache of ammo and explosives they had stashed inside their house, bringing the house down.
16
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Job accomplished, Lt Puneet finally succumbed to the grievous injuries he had sustained in the process.
He had turned 24 just three months ago.
Puneet had earned an Ashok Chakra for his Paltan on his last day in this world. Image
17
#ObituaryOfTheDay
In an irony of fate, it was also the first day in the Paltan for a young officer by the name of Manoj Kumar Pandey, who would earn a Param Vir Chakra for 1/11 Gorkha Rifles less than two years later.

Rifleman Mohan Singh, Vir Chakra (Posth), 11 RAJRIF
Fell in Sri Lanka this day in 1989.
Here's his story .. Image
2
#ObituaryOfTheDay
This day in 1989, Rifleman Mohan Singh was deployed in Sri Lanka as part of his battalion, 11 Rajputana Rifles.
The battalion was in receipt of intelligence regarding frequent move of militants in Tanniyuttu town in their area of responsibility.
3
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Accordingly, they had planned an ambush to finish these militants.
Rifleman Mohan Singh was entrusted with the LMG of the ambush platoon.
4
#ObituaryOfTheDay
However, since the ambush site was located in a built up area, surprise was lost and the militants came to know of presence of own troops.
At approx 1220Hr, they suddenly opened up heavy fire on the 11 Raj Rif boys from well sited positions.
5
#ObituaryOfTheDay
The ambush party themselves had been ambushed.
However, the men from Rajputana were not ones to be cowed down by this minor hitch.
They hit back. Hard.
Amongst them, Mohan Singh too responded immediately and brought down heavy, effective fire on the militants.
6
#ObituaryOfTheDay
The Rajputs were at a huge disadvantage tactically, but stubbornly held on.
During the firefight, Mohan Singh noticed a group of militants rushing to the neighbouring section in order to snatch weapons from the injured personnel.
7
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Unmindful of risk to his own life and with indomitable courage, Mohan came out of his covered position and CHARGED towards the militants with his LMG and brought down heavy fire upon them, inflicting many casualties, while saving his injured comrades' lives.
8

The startled militants fired back, but had to beat a hasty retreat due to this one man charge.
In the process, however, Rifleman Mohan Singh was hit and fell down, dead.

6

Needless to say, the Ganpats of 17 RR (Maratha LI), led by their equally ferocious Kashmiri Pandit leader, Maj Aima, soon made their presence felt.
The Pakistani terrorists suffered heavy losses, Maj Sushil Aima personally accounting for two of them.

A forgotten conflict .. A forgotten martyr.
Capt Eric James Tucker Ashok Chakra (P), OC 'Bravo Company' 2nd Maratha Light Infantry (Kali Panchwin).
Here's his story .. Image
2
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Capt James Tucker was deployed in the Naga Hills in 1957. A mighty dirty campaign out there, he had already proven his mettle a couple of weeks ago, on 18 Jul 1957 when he had outmaneuvered a large group of militants and inflicted heavy casualties on them.
3
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Then again, this day in 1957, while proceeding from Khuzami to Kivikhu with a platoon, he was ambushed in the thick undergrowth of the jungle near Milestone 70 by militants bent on revenge, who had obtained advance information about his movement.
4
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Undaunted by the inherent disadvantage due to terrain and the fact that initiative lay with militants, Capt James stood his ground and engaged the militants till his last round.
5
#ObituaryOfTheDay
His ammo exhausted, Capt James Tucker did the only thing that his instincts told him.
No, he didn't try to escape.
Instead, he CHARGED at the militants, bayonet first.
In doing so, he received a fatal burst of automatic fire that felled him on the spot.

Their moment of glory came when they engaged a huge group of terrorists in Village Zafarkhani.
It was one hell of an engagement between the boys of 18 Dogra, led by Maj Shankla and the rats from across that numbered close to 50.

Needless to say, it was our boys that came up tops that day, dispatching 9 and apprehending 22, along with enough arms & ammo to arm a small militia.
It had been a crazy engagement indeed, with the rats desperate to flee and own boys in no mood to oblige them.

This is the story of a unique bond between a dog & its handler - Mansi & Bashir Ahmed War - BOTH of whom fell fighting in Tangdhar, this day six years ago. Image
#ObituaryOfTheDay
3/10
The duo were posted in densely forested areas near the Line of Control and had brought successes to the Indian Army by successfully tracking down terrorists, leading to their elimination, on two previous occasions on 25 May & 21 Jul in the same area.
#ObituaryOfTheDay
4/10
On night of 08-09 Aug, the two were deployed at a known infiltration route when suddenly Mansi sensed movement & started barking & pulling her handler towards an area where clouds were low, when suddenly the terrorists opened fire & killed her instantly.
#ObituaryOfTheDay
5/10
This enraged Bashir, who radioed back about the location of the terrorists and started firing relentlessly at them, alone, maddened by the death of his faithful friend whom he had looked after ever since she had joined his unit.
#ObituaryOfTheDay
6/10
As fate would have it, even death couldn't part this man & his faithful canine companion.
He too was soon martyred, having alone engaged a large group of terrorists.
#ObituaryOfTheDay
7/10
But his call for reinforcements and his audacious charge that delayed the the terrorists further, had already sealed their fate.
Fellow soldiers soon eliminated the entire group of Paaki infiltrators.
#ObituaryOfTheDay
8/10
Mansi and Bashir were the only casualties on own side.
Mansi was soon laid to rest at her unit lines at Trehgam, while Bashir too was buried not very far, in his native village in Kupwara.
#ObituaryOfTheDay
9/10
Bashir Ahmed War, a local Kashmiri lad from Kupwara, was honoured with a posthumous Sena Medal for his gallantry, while Mansi was 'Mentioned-In-Despatches', immortalizing her name too in the Gazette of India, for her supreme sacrifice for the Nation.
#ObituaryOfTheDay

Mansi was four years old when she was martyred.
Bashir would have been in his 20s.

So I came across this tweet a couple of days ago.
I cannot describe how happy I felt upon seeing this.
Reason?
I had tweeted something on similar lines more than four years ago, on 22 March 2017. Image
2
However, since I managed to break that short, 13 tweet thread while tweeting it, I shall share here the same thread that I replugged in Jan 2018 before moving ahead.
3
Do go thru the thread quoted in the tweet above. It is hardly 13 tweets long, but brings out my take on the issue.
It is indeed unforgivable to have had so many of our finest spill their blood in these lands of Rishi Kashyap, and not have any memorial outside of cantonments.

On the second anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370, replugging a twitter thread that I tweeted a few hours before the announcement of the abrogation in the Parliament of India.
Here goes ..

Firstly, let us be very clear, we didn't reach the current situation in the past week, or month, or the past year.
Far from it.
The genesis of the Indo-Pak Kashmir imbroglio lies in the breach of the standstill agreement by the Dominion of Pakistan way back in 1947.
3
Kashmir was doomed from the moment Paaki army sent in its non-uniformed foot soldiers into the state and after a few initial, dispersed skirmishes, captured & raped Muzaffarabad on 22 Oct 1947, followed by the capture & rape of Baramula a few days later.

This day in 1999, the ceasefire in #Kargil was in its sixth day, to give the Paakis an opportunity to vacate the heights they were still in possession of. But, true to their 'style', the fcukers, instead of vacating, went about happily mining the approaches to those positions.

So today is the 36th anniversary of the bombing of Air India 'Kanishka' by Canada based terrorists.
Replugging some thoughts on the same.

Letting out some thoughts and some facts when it came to Western nations not merely looking away at terrorism aimed at India in the 70s, 80s and the 90s, but in cases, actually encouraging it.
This state sponsored terror cost us dearly then, and costs us dearly even now.
3
70s - 90s were not very popular years for Govt of India in Western capitals. At best, they looked away when it came to matters that were detrimental to Indian interests and at worst, they actively fomented trouble within Indian borders.
Primary reason was that the ..
