SOCAR representative on Facebook just deleted his earlier statement which said the cause was likely a mud volcano, and has reposted it without that statement.

@Archer83Able Per @cavidaga, the Head of the Dept of Mud Volcanism of ANAS, Adil Aliyev, stated there is no mud volcanoes in the area, an explosion on a ship is a possibility.

Turkish media outlet Anadolu Agency had a reporter claim that the explosion happened on board a tanker, that claim is yet to be confirmed, but the statement from Aliyev suggests it could be possible.

Azerbaijan Ministry of Extraordinary Situations says no emergencies occurred at offshore oil infrastructure or industrial facilities. Investigation into the incident is underway. (ht @cavidaga)
