From WAPO editorial on #Haiti today: "Swift and muscular intervention is needed"

The US & its top allies have trampled democracy & human rights in #Haiti through most of the 21rst century are never held accountable - & therefore keep doing it

THREAD

washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/…
The editorial provides sanitized overview of the 13 year UN occupation of Haiti from 2004 - 2017 - so sanitized that even tho it says the occupation was "far cry from perfect" but nevertheless calls for it again.

"It's good enough for Haitians" seems to be the msg.
Editorial mentions that UN troops brought a cholera epidemic to Haiti but not that it killed 10,000 people. Obama's government fought in court (successfully) to shield the UN from a lawsuit aimed at holding it accountable

telesurenglish.net/opinion/US-Cou…
"The U.N. force did manage, however, to bring a modicum of stability to Haiti following the 2004 uprising that deposed President Jean-Bertrand Aristide. "

US troops kidnapped Aristide after economic sanctions it imposed shortly after he was elected in 2000 failed to oust him
After the US perpetrated a coup in 2004 (literally kidnapping Aristide) UN troops came in to prop up the US-backed Latortue dictatorship that killed thousands of Aristide's supporters (probably ~ 4000 by 2006)
In 2006, despite the election rigged against them by the dictatorship, Rene Preval (who was barely able to campaign) won what was undoubtedly a legitimate victory, but his tentative steps towards restoring Haiti's sovereignty were destroy in the wake of massive earthquake in 2010
Thanks to Wikileaks we are able to flesh out that US & its allies basically see Haiti as a small but important pawn in the region

zcomm.org/zblogs/wikilea…
Wikileaks also gave us a sense of what little room Preval had to maneuver before the earthquake in 2010 gave the US a fresh excuse to impose completely illegitimate governments on Haiti
zcomm.org/zblogs/wikilea…
Key article to read from 2011:

U.S., EU Backed Haitian Election, Deeming “Too Much Invested” to Pull Out
haitiliberte.com/us-eu-backed-h…
So reinvigorated US bullying after 2010 leads Haiti to right wing candidates winning elections where barely anyone shows up. Moise, who was just assassinated, received the votes of about 10% of the electorate in 2016.

& WAPO just called for the wretched history to repeat itself
One other thing important to recall from 2004: #Venezuela under Chavez along with Cuba and CARICOM states oppsed the US coup against Aristide’s democratically elected government

Prominent human rights fraud (@jmvivancohrw of @hrw) objects to the arrest of US-backed ex-dictator Jeanine Áñez in #Bolivia . Vivanco & his boss @KenRoth parroted the OAS lies that incited the coup that installed her in Nov, 2019

THREAD
The OAS lied repeatedly & boldly about the election won by Morales in 2019. Key OAS lies were not even subtle.

@jmvivancohrw & @KenRoth spread those lies and eagerly smeared Morales. Vivanco explicitly called #Bolivia a "democracy " months into Áñez murderous illegitimate rule
Of course Empire-serving outlets like @reuters also played a key role in shielding the OAS from accountability for its despicable role in the coup that install Áñez. But big NGOs like HRW do a kind of tag team with western Establishment media.

Ignorance about #Ecuador , specifically about Yaku Perez & Manuela Picq (his partner), can badly confuse people outside Ecuador who should know better than to promote Perez as a leftist. Let's go over some things again
THERAD
Here is 41 second clip of Yaku Perez saying that Rafael Correa, from Belgium, will use Venezuelans to infiltrate Perez's supporters to cause violence at their protests of the CNE (electoral authorities)

Perez has just taken to Ecuador's rightwing private media to spread the smears of the Colombian d Ecuadorian right wing that Presidential candidate, and winner of the first round, Andres Andres received campaign funding from ELN rebels in Colombia.

Quite a contrast here with @Reuters coverage that @brianpablo10 et al provide of #Ecuador under Moreno

Thread
Article says “Maduro's government says opposition figures are regularly involved in plots to topple him, though officials often do not give evidence for such accusations”

US & the opposition have been openly working together to topple the government for years. Not a secret plot
Meanwhile #Ecuador’s President Moreno - a close US ally - just said he would not be surprised if Rafael Correa had been behind this weeks gruesome prison riots. Batshit thing to say but no mention from Reuters

Wow. Let’s see how many big scandals Alexandria Valencia of @Reuters can tiptoe past in her latest on #Ecuador
reuters.com/article/idUSL1…
1) Health Minister Zeballos quoted with no mention of all the calls for him to resign over queque jumping to get vaccines for family members
2) Cites official COVID_19 death toll of 10.8k with no mention of @FT excess desth toll of over 40k

1/ The “dictatorship” label for #Ecuador will be justified if the Correaist candidate @ecuarauz is banned by electoral authorities as this piece suggests may happen. I do not throw that term around lightly
2/ I have not used that label to describe #Ecuador under Moreno despite the many ways he has assaulted & degraded democracy since 2017. Let’s review (as @GuillaumeLong ‘s does very well)
3/ Moreno created & HANDPICKED a body that took on constituent assembly powers to stack judiciary & electoral authorities to his liking in 2018.

UN report "considers that [Leopoldo] López was a victim of 'torture and cruel treatment or punishment,' even though there are no examples or records that confirm this"

The UN report is badly discredited for this claim alone.
If you claim this about Lopez then you should claim it about anyone in prison for a serious crime anywhere in the world.
If the UN report suspends judgement or otherwise fails to concede that an assassination attempt against Maduro took place in August of 2018, then that also badly damages the reports credibility
