This is disturbing. The rights to freedom of expression and assembly are not dependent on the popularity of the ideas or of the group... Or whether the prime minister agrees with them...

Freedom to say only what's popular and government-approved is no freedom at all.
Democracy is not simply, "whatever the majority says, goes".

Disagree?

➡️ Imagine you're in a room with 9 other people, and 6 of them vote to throw you out the window.

6 out of 10: a majority. So, you're ready to fall to your death?

No, something's not right. You know it.
Democracy is meaningless without respect for human rights.

The situations described above are what’s sometimes called, “a tyranny of the majority”. That’s not democracy. That’s not freedom.
In a democracy, some things are more important than voting, more important than what the majority want.

Those things are called fundamental freedoms, or human rights, and no vote can take them away.

A court in #Russia has convicted prominent human rights defender Semyon Simonov on criminal charges related to the abusive “foreign agents” law.

This caps nearly 8 years of harassment & intimidation against him in retaliation for his human rights work.

“The criminal case against Semyon Simonov has been a sham from start to finish.” - @Damelya_HRW
One area of Simonov’s work was documenting the exploitation of and abuses experienced by migrant workers involved in construction for Russia’s Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics & the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

He was also involved in human rights education and monitored police conduct.

Germany's official line: only 1% of people in poor countries have had a jab, yet the pace of vaccine rollout is "encouraging". 🤔

Deadly arrogance…

FACT: only 12% of people are fully vaccinated.

FACT: it needs to be 70% at least.

FACT: at current rate, it will take years
The lies and disinformation about global vaccinations that pour out of certain parts of the EU - in particular, from the German government and the European Commission it dominates - are just appalling.

They serve the pharma companies only.

The rate of global vaccinations is a disaster.

At current vaccination rate in low income countries, they will be waiting years for a jab.

There is nothing "encouraging" about it in any way.

Torture is:

➡️ immoral;

➡️ illegal (in international law & usually national law);

➡️ ineffective (people will say anything to make it stop);

➡️ counterproductive (it acts as a recruiting poster for your enemies).
The first one is enough for me, but, you know, for those who need other reasons, there are at least three more...

The vast majority of people haven't even had one shot yet, and at current jab rates, most won't for years…

And the more booster shots rich countries need, the more years it's likely to be…

All because rich governments impose global vaccine scarcity.
abcnews.go.com/Health/booster…
The need for 3rd-shot boosters is one reason why calls for rich governments to donate spare doses will achieve limited results.

Yes, such donations would be good, but govts will likely want to avoid being attacked for not prioritising those at home.
wired.co.uk/article/covid-…
The other reason why donating spare doses would achieve limited results is the scale of global need.

A few governments have talked about donating tens of millions of doses; one or two have said maybe hundreds of millions.

💥 But we need 11 billion doses at least.

Tatiana Kouzina, a prominent #Belarus researcher & policy analyst, detained in Minsk.

She will be held in pretrial custody for two months.

The charge?

Authorities won’t say…

hrw.org/news/2021/07/0…
Kouzina’s lawyer may know the charges against her, but he cannot disclose them because he was required to sign a nondisclosure agreement.

This absurdity is typical in politically motivated criminal cases in #Belarus.
#Belarus courts hold hearings behind closed doors and force lawyers to sign nondisclosure agreements, prohibiting them from commenting on all matters related to the case, including the actual charges.

Should we start naming corona variants after political leaders who are blocking wider vaccine production, thus prolonging the pandemic & making the emergence of new variants more likely?

- The "Merkel variant"?

- The "von der Leyen variant"?

- The "Johnson variant"?
The EU, UK & a few other rich governments have been blocking & delaying wider vaccine production globally by obstructing the #TRIPSwaiver, a proposal to temporarily waive some intellectual property (IP) rules on vaccines & other health products.
reliefweb.int/report/world/e…
These leaders are literally prolonging the global pandemic. And they know full well that’s what they are doing by prioritising pharma companies' profits over human lives.

They should get credit for it, no?
