📍THIRD SHOTS BEGUN—Israel’s 🇮🇱 Ministry of Health began offering a third dose of Pfizer vaccine to severely immunocompromised adults—likely the first phase to provide booster shots for older people and the most vulnerable, amid #DeltaVariant surge. 🧵 washingtonpost.com/world/israel-v…
2) “The recommendation clarified that the goal of the new program was to raise antibody levels among immunocompromised citizens — including cancer patients and recipients of liver transplants, and others who data shows have recently exhibited weakened vaccine protection”
3) “The decision comes as Israel, which was among the fastest to vaccinate and among the first in the world to begin reopening in the spring, is experiencing a surge in new cases, spurred by the prevalence of the more transmissible Delta variant first identified in India.
4) “Over the past month, infection rates in Israel have spiked from single digits to around 450 a day.”
Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett announced he has coordinated a fast-tracked delivery of the next batch of Pfizer doses to arrive Aug. 1.
5) Israel’s ministry of health reported a 64% efficacy of 2 dose Pfizer in June when #DeltaVariant dominant, compared to 94% just in May recently. That’s a big drop. Another 🇮🇱 study found 70% against delta. Hospitalization efficacy now 93% instead of 98%
6) I noted last week that this 3rd shot Israel 🇮🇱 MOH decision was forthcoming. #DeltaVariant just so aggressive that a 3rd shot needed for fuller protection. I also warned yesterday of vulnerable elderly.
7) Vaccines work well. But not perfectly. We still need to protect elderly and/or frail even if they are vaccinated. Avoid indoor gatherings amid #DeltaVariant surge even if vaccinated if you’re vulnerable — this is a great move by Mississippi— now where is the CDC’s guideline?
8) Please note— the #DeltaVariant is 4x more severe than other older strains. This study is from the Singapore Ministry of Health data. It also is more severe than Alpha variant, which was already more severe than original. we need to stop deluding ourselves about Delta.
~1000 infected out of 20,000-person music festival in the Netherlands. Maybe this type of thing is bad idea during a pandemic while #DeltaVariant ⬆️? NL also had the sharpest #COVID19 spike in the world last week. Now I worry for soccer ⚽️ even more. 🧵 ad.nl/utrecht/bijna-…
2) Another factor - when Dutch people goto bars and restaurants - they don’t mask.
📍“I AM AFRAID FOR MY STATE”—On July 12, Dr. Michelle Fiscus, the top vaccine official in Tennessee, was fired. She was scapegoated to appease Republicans angry about efforts to vaccinate kids. After losing her job, Fiscus wrote a blistering statement. 🧵 tennessean.com/story/news/hea…
2) “Today I became the 25th of 64 state and territorial immunization program directors to leave their position during this pandemic. That’s nearly 40% of us. And along with our resignations or retirements or, as in my case, push from office, goes the institutional knowledge…
3) “and leadership of our respective COVID-19 vaccine responses. I will not sit quietly by while our public health infrastructure is eroded in the midst of a pandemic.”
📍Pregnant woman died of #COVID19–she carried a 30-week old child. She wasn’t vaccinated despite public health urging—but her brother-in-law led a large anti-vax group. The 32-year-old pregnant mom arrived at hospital too late—baby also died. 😢 #vaccinatetimesofisrael.com/family-of-preg…
2) there are many other reasons to vaccinate including pregnant women being at greater risk of #COVID19 due to their pregnancy….
3) brother-in-law of the deceased pregnant mother of 4 said he had set up an anti-vaccination Facebook group that swelled to thousands of members, and that he is still a member of several other groups. His sister in law is now dead, and her 4 kids without a mother. Shameful.
⚠️New #COVID19 recommendations amid spike in #DeltaVariant ➡️All Mississippi residents ages 65+ & anyone with chronic conditions, should avoid all indoor mass gatherings **regardless of vaccination status**. Good. Delta is ~4x more severe than old strain🧵 mississippitoday.org/2021/07/09/msd…
2) The rapid rise of Delta variant cases and virus outbreaks combined with the state’s low vaccination rate led the Mississippi Department of Health to release a slew of new COVID-related guidelines on Friday.
3) The new recommendations, which will stay in place through July 26, also include:
📍All unvaccinated Mississippians wear a mask when indoors in public settings.
📍All Mississippians 12 years of age and older get vaccinated.
A new “signal” of new variant—Public health officials are investigating a new variant that could have emerged in the North-East 🏴 even amid #DeltaVariant takeover—the region has seen fastest rise in #COVID19 cases in past 7 days. How about #ZeroCovid now? inews.co.uk/news/politics/…
2) “Six out of the top 10 UK areas with the highest prevalence for Covid-19 in the past week are now in the North-East, including South Tyneside, where there are 828.6 infections per 100,000 people, and Newcastle-upon-Tyne, with 744 per 100,000.”
3) “While the Delta variant is the dominant variant in the region, as in the rest of Britain, scientific advisers have noticed a “signal” in the North-East surge which could be linked to a new strain that originated in the UK.”
