Last year @SenWarren, @RepRobinKelly, & I requested @USGAO conduct a comprehensive study on the healthcare costs of gun violence to get a better picture of the price of inaction.

Today, Rep. Kelly, @SenMarkey, @RepCori, gun safety advocates, and I are releasing the results. 1/8
THE BIG TAKEAWAY: we spend at least $1 BILLION/ year on just the initial hospital costs of gun violence.

We still don't know the longer-term costs including readmissions, surgery, physical rehab, long-term care, mental health crisis care, counseling, and more. 2/8
WHAT'S MORE: >60% of the $1B initial hospital cost of gun violence is borne by public health programs.

Roughly ½ of that falls on Medicaid, the health care safety net for people with lower incomes. 3/8
So why don't we know the longer-term costs?

According to the GAO, it's simply because the data isn't being collected.

@SenMarkey and I have a bill, the Gun Violence Prevention Research Act, that would provide $250M to @CDCgov to provide us answers to questions like these. 4/8
One final, horrifying finding: MORE THAN HALF of people hospitalized for gun violence in the US are Black, although Black people make up just 13% of the population.

ADDRESSING GUN VIOLENCE IS A HEALTH EQUITY ISSUE. 5/8
I've authored many pieces of #GunSafety legislation to honor the victims of gun violence with action.

And I don't plan on slowing down. 6/8
For too long, the @NRA and its accomplices in Congress have blocked any meaningful action.

That must change.

As Chair of @OversightDems, I intend to lead the way so Americans can better understand the corrupt, dark money forces standing in the way of a safer America. 7/8
Finally, I want to thank the staff at @USGAO for compiling this detailed report and @PublicHealth, @AMarch4OurLives, @Everytown, and Families Advocating Safe Streets for joining me in releasing this report and all their advocacy. 8/8

I am proud to announce that I have secured $6.3M for #NY12 in House appropriations legislation!

The organizations receiving this funding are integral to our community, and I’m thrilled to be able to support their work.

First up, @TheFloatingHosp is slated to receive $925,000 to fund health care and IT upgrades to better meet the needs of the community, especially the vulnerable populations that rely on them for care.
Second, @thealliance_nyc is slated to receive $1 million for their PATH to Jobs program, which provides career readiness and job placement services for low-income NYers living with chronic health conditions, and includes vocational education, training, and benefits counseling.

Big Pharma's favorite talking point is that without the high prices they charge, they would not be able to produce life-saving drugs.

This is a lie.

Our 2-year @OversightDems investigation, started by the late Chairman Cummings, now has the internal docs showing why 🧵👇
1. From 2016-2020, the 14 biggest drug makers spent $56 BILLION more on stock buybacks and dividends than R&D.

$56B more to enrich execs & investors instead of developing & improving medications.

They're projected to spend $1.15 trillion on buybacks & dividends from 2020-2029.
2. When you and I think "research & development," we think about innovation to produce new drugs or improve existing ones.

But, many of these companies spent significant portions of their "R&D" budgets on suppressing generic or biosimilar versions of their drugs from coming out.

Let’s take another look at some of the emails @OversightDems uncovered in our investigation of Trump's campaign to pressure the DOJ to overturn the election:

Mark Meadows, Italian vote changing satellites, Rudy Giuliani, and the Acting Attorney General🤯🧵
On Dec 30, 2020, Meadows emailed then-Acting Attorney General Rosen a translation of a document from an individual in Italy claiming to have “direct knowledge” of a plot by which American electoral data was changed “in coordination with senior US intelligence officials (CIA)” 2/7 Image
This data was then supposedly loaded onto “military satellites.” The individual claimed that the true data, as well as sources within the conservative wing of the Italian secret service, confirmed that Donald Trump was “clearly the winner” of the 2020 election. 3/7

I promised I would investigate Jan 6, regardless of the outcome of the impeachment or vote on a bipartisan commission.

This morning, @OversightDems, the Committee I chair, released new docs about Trump’s pressure campaign on DOJ to overturn the election.

What we found👇
On December 14, 2020—the day electors in each state certified the Electoral College votes—President Trump’s White House Assistant sent an email with the subject “From POTUS” to then-Deputy Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen. 2/
The email attached materials about alleged voter fraud in Antrim County, Michigan, including “talking points” that asserted, “a Cover-up is Happening regarding the voting machines in Michigan,” and, “Michigan cannot certify for Biden.” 3/

My full statement on the Senate impeachment trial below:

“Just over five weeks ago, our Capitol was seized, and our democracy halted by insurrectionists incited by former President Trump... 1/
At his behest, a mob desecrated the seat of our democracy with Confederate flags, wearing shirts extolling Nazism and the Holocaust, chanting that they wanted to murder the former Vice President... 2/
“The facts of that day are incontrovertible, which is why this was the most bipartisan impeachment of a president in our nation’s history – in both the House and Senate... 3/

Today, I introduced 5 #GunSafety reform bills.

These laws will keep guns away from criminals, close loopholes, promote smart gun tech, and much more.

This is just the start, but I hope in the 117th Congress we can finally pass laws to #EndGunViolence & #HonorWithAction 🧵 Image
Law enforcement officers need every tool available to go after gun traffickers & have been asking Congress to act for years.

The Gun Trafficking & Crime Prevention Act would make straw purchases, like the one Kenosha shooter Kyle Rittenhouse used to obtain a gun, a felony. Image
Each year, about 5,200 gun shows are held across the US, attracting thousands. Many individuals who would otherwise not be able to purchase a firearm, can do so w/out a background check there.

The Gun Show Loophole Closing Act would close this dangerous loophole. Image
