As @MatthewGreenNDP aptly says: “Burn It All Down” is a call for decolonization, not arson… not an ignition of actual, literal fires... but burning down structures of injustice to create better futures.
I agree with @garthmullins & countless others who speak both of the profoundly principled & progressive decades of community organizing that @HarshaWalia has done, as well as @bccla’s cowardly caving to clear racism & misogyny.
Two decades ago, my dear friend Erin (now Eliyanna) Kaiser was sued by the anti-choice “Genocide Awareness Project” — bigots who were represented by then @bccla President Craig Jones in #BCCLA capacity.
The @bccla’s history, two decades ago, of taking on legal cases (and internal @UBC student disciplinary cases) on behalf of anti-choice bigots, with the pro-bono support from former #BCCLA President Craig Jones, seems relevant.
There’s no question that @HarshaWalia’s hiring many months ago by @bccla was a radical departure from what I would hope most would agree was an embarrassing history of #BCCLA representing bigots & right wing crackpots.
As always, @cultureofdefeat makes a salient point: the “free speech fetishists” of the far right are nowhere to be seen when @HarshaWalia is attacked & forced to resign for a single apt tweet.
The real free speech struggles, day-to-day, are almost exclusively in workplaces & jobsites, where bad bosses fire workers for expressing opinions… like @bccla firing @HarshaWalia for a tweet.
I was in #Havana for March 11 2018 Cuban parliamentary elections, and agree entirely… and was also there during the February 24th Cuban Constitutional referendum & saw vibrant & democratic public debate.
During the March 11th 2018 Cuban parliamentary elections, Suzanne (@esooze) & I saw competing candidate posters in our Centro #Havana neighbourhood & apartment block.
During the Feb. 24th 2019 Cuban Constitutional Referendum, we saw vibrant debate… and 90.61% in support.
