Let's talk about the hike in food prices & other products & everything we need to understand about it as a people & nation.
It doesn't matter if we are willing to move or not, one thing is certain about life - It is not STATIC. The reality is here...
2. The recent hike in food prices is global.
With lots of angry citizens domiciled in our country, many tend to isolate our nation in challenges from the rest of the world. It can never be.
The pang from a price surge is global, only that ours may be predictable & avoidable...
3. What are the causes of hike in food prices?
i) The Higher the Global Oil Price, the bigger the impact.
Food products get transported at great distances and high oil prices raise shipping costs. On farming also, oil byproducts are a significant component of fertilizer etc...
This is the reason why a nation God has blessed abundantly with arable lands & favourable climate doesn't have an excuse for hike in food prices due to transported food from the US, Norway, Thailand etc.
This is the reason why having functional refineries is needful...
ii. Climate Change & hike in food prices
What can anyone or govt do to avoid extreme weather? Air temperatures increasing, It's raining less, water from lakes & rivers evaporating, lands drying up, floods are becoming irresistible, which in turn can damage crops 🤦🏾♀️...
But then, no country serious with high agric production wld solely rely on nature. Fortune only favours the brave. What stops us as a nation from Irrigation farming to stem hike in food prices due to unfavourable climate? Wld that be a 21st century scientific discovery?...
iii. Dwindling Govt Subsidies & hike in food prices
Nations of the world are earning less due to the general economic dip, a direct impact on the rate of agric output subsidies. Nigeria isn't left out. This is a govt still battling on providing basic infrastructural facilities...
It may be easy to say, "Let hawa govt forget about trains, roads, power deals for now. Let them concentrate on alleviating hunger & adequate food supply" but then, what do you transport the food supplies with interstate wise? How do u preserve harvests agnst hike in food prices?
As far back as 2015, the CBN had restricted access to inadequate forex earnings for at least 41 items at the Nig. FX market which it said can be produced in Nigeria.
This was done to encourage local production but no doubt short time hike in food prices is unavoidable...
iv. Covid-19 Pandemic & hike in food prices
Is there anything this bad boy didn't affect negatively aside social media technology?
From 2020, there was a 4.4% hike in food prices generally. Why? Amidst lockdowns, demand for food-at-home escalated...
Exports & imports were disrupted as countries closed their borders to stop the spread of the virus. Local farmers battled disruptions in supply due to geographical lockdowns, many investors even suffered casualty or collapse in finances. How wldn't there be hike in food prices?
Let's now dig even deeper... Insecurity & hike in food prices.
Catch me up in the Part II of this thread if you could find one or two points you agree with here. ✌️🇳🇬✅
☺️ Rescued Flt Lt. Abayomi Dairo of NAF tells his story:
Thank you so much everybody. I’m indebted to Bro Ekele and bro Olagbende, and everyone on this platform. Before Sunday I had been having dreams where I saw myself fighting and evading enemies like real-time war...
day in day out, like nightmares, so when my jet got shot with the explosives and my flight controls were destroyed and I had no choice than to eject, I just said ‘God, finally, here we go’…
As I was flanked by the bandits, I kept praying and I kept telling God...
to answer your prayers because I know you were all praying for me. I love you all. And I thank God for bestowing his love on me and saving me from death several times within that period... I will still share my testimonies but truly, God ordered my steps, the bandits...
Harry E. Fosdick wrote, "I hate war... for the dictatorships it puts in the place of democracies, and for the starvation that stalks after it".
The protests were initially dubbed, "End to Police Brutality"...
At least i joined at the inception with that same goal in mind but at last, there was far more to the rage - It was a subtle war declared & a civil coup against the ruling government.
The protests achieved one thing - The final demystification of our fragile security system...
The protests sparked a nationwide looting of food banks, storehouses and massive theft accessioned by breaking & entry.Aren't we lamenting already about hike in food prices now?
In the end, no #BuhariMustGo could work. Buhari remains in power, so is the hunger raging in the land!
Don’t compare today’s youths to Awolowo, Zik and Tafawa Balewa!
Alot of people say the likes of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Nnamdi Azikiwe and Tafawa Balewa, Gowon, Obasanjo, Buhari, etc all ruled Nigeria when they were young, so why can’t this generation do the same? (THREAD)
2/
Infact, the comparison grew during the #EndSARS protests. Don’t get me wrong, none is against the younger generation ruling this country but in all fairness they lack everything those Babas had.
These men engaged the British not by physical protests but by intellectual ones.
3/
They were philosophers in their own right, they had ideals, philosophy and a clear vision. These men contested the Clifford Constitution of 1922, the Richards constitution of 1945 until they pushed for independence.

A - The cost of electricity in Nig is N53 per Kilowatt/hr & what Nigerians have been paying is N31, meaning, there is a subsidy of about N22. FG has spent $1.5billion this yr alone...
2) Why is there hike in Petrol?
A - With Brent crude futures hitting a high of $55.53, the landing cost of PMS has also soared. With partial deregulation in place, consumers wld feel it more.

Why is there hike in DSTV Subs?
A - The company explained they had to accommodate the new VAT rate of 7.5%. Also, the current inflation at 12.82% influenced their decisions.
Anyways, DSTV isn't a Naija company. You can also try an alternative like StarTimes 🤒
