's Middags lezen, 's avonds schrijven.
For all the tourists who think it's ok to enter an elevator in Istanbul without a mask, and just ignore the 2 persons only instruction and enter with 8. #losinghope4humanity
Three years ago I came to Istanbul, for Syria research. The idea was for 6 months. But I liked it so much I stayed. And now I don't want to go back at all....şerefe!
Istanbul has the same temperature as Tel Aviv this week and is warmer than Beirut...32C - 34C. I love it.
I just heard some guys speak Palestinian Arabic but with 'haich' instead of 'haik' 'like this/that'. Curiosity kills the cat so I asked which city in Palestine/Israel they come from: Firdaus, 'in the 'muthalath' triangle, near Haifa...
They really explained to me exactly what area is doing this k/ch change and why. Cool. I told them I know it from Qamishli and Deir Ezzor..
We have a view of Sultan Ahmet and the Galata Tower & great music 💃💃
On the house... teşekkür ederim
... 💞💞 Istanbul
Istanbul in summer = speaking different kinds of Arabic & Turkish every day, and Modern Hebrew about every other day. Gosh what a language paradise it is...
Today I heard some girls speak real eastern mushriq arabic while swimming laps. I asked if they were from southern Iraq. Turned out to be Bahrain. I really need to work on my Gulf Arabics...
So, Ragheb Alame and pro Hezbollah and pro Assad Melhem Zein are going to perform in Antalya soon...Lebanon is coming to Turkey...
Now, some better news, Najwa Karam is coming too...@RafdenTempst
Hayda mish Haki wi hayda mish kalaam...
This is a whole poster... it looks like all of Lebanon is on its way to Antalya... although I must admit I don't know them all...
(Since January 25, 2011 I no longer have time to listen to Arabic music channels...)
We made our voices heard when Melhem Zain was promoted by the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam in 2017...it did have effect. @janjaapderuiter parool.nl/nieuws/kritiek…
With millions of Syrian refugees here, mostly because of the regime and its allies among them Hezbollah, I think it is a great shame that Melhem Zein is performing in southern Turkey, not even that far from the IDP camps in northwestern Syria. Unless he changed his mind.
This the kind of cooking I am doing these days 🤣
Busy combining work & vacation...
I just told some Egyptians that I am teaching the Bint El-Giran song. And now they are setting it up 🤣
I am learning Turkish on the street. Walla.
😍
Op m'n middag office...💙💙
😍 net gedaan.
Isn't this the Turkish singer who also knows Arabic? :)
Aywa. This could also be Iraqi, Syrian or Lebanese music, I would say...
Learning Turkish in a taxi...
Temas-sız: I know -sız = without
ödeme: to pay
yap-abil-ir-siniz: yap fr do,
-abil- fr Arabic qaabil قابل -able, similarity w English -able is fascinating!
-ir guess some present time indicator..
Then I realised 'temas' is fr Arabic..
Oftewel: u kunt contactloos betalen...
I know خط التماس as 'front line' like the front line 3 km south of Azaz between SNA and YPG. It is maybe rather touch line.
Turkish is fun for Arabic speakers...
Leyla & Mecnun...
I just interviewed a Turkish-Kurdish teenager who escaped from the Syrian YPG in Sinjar and returned to his home/family in Diyarbakir just 4 weeks ago. He was kidnapped 3 years ago during an event in Şanlıurfa and smuggled to Tel Abyad. Thanks @TulayDemir00 for the contact.
More later.
I also interviewed Midia today. She tells me that her daughter has been kidnapped by the PKK from Berlin. (I was not aware that these abductions by the PKK also take place on EU soil). She wants her daughter back, has no idea where she is now. (German)
Kurdish women from several cities in southeastern Turkey demonstrate today in front of the HDP (PKK-linked) office in Diyarbakır to demand the whereabouts of their kidnapped girls and boys, for which they believe the HDP, PKK kidnapped them to camps in Syria or Iraq . @KatiPiri
Yesterday I interviewed a teenager from Diyarbakır who managed to jump from a YPG car in Shingal/Sinjar, KRI N Iraq, after 6 attempts and returned 4 weeks ago. He could tell a lot about training camps in Tabqa and Kobani and how many Turkish-Kurdish kidnapped minors there are etc
He even knows enough Syrian Arabic to talk to me. He spent 3 years all together in Tabqa, Kobani and Hasaka, Northeast Syria.
He managed to escape along with an Arab man who had been forcibly conscripted from Hasaka, he said.
Today I will be speaking with another Turkish Kurdish teenager who was kidnapped in Turkey and sold (that's the word the families use here) to YPG on the other side of the border.
These women are desperate. It's a huge contrast to how PKK/YPG is sometimes portrayed in the West.
Tussen Diyarbakır en Mardin...
Heerlijk warm hier nog. Gister 37C, vandaag 33C. Istanbul zal frisjes zijn met slechts 24C..
This afternoon I interviewed a Turkish-Kurdish guy. He's still scared, I won't say his name. He was sold to YPG by someone in the same the street at the age of 14, as he and his mother put it. Taken from the city with some other teenagers fr the same area to a camp in Iran first.
This happened in 2014, he managed to escape in March 2020. It was his 22nd attempt, he told me. They caught him all those other times and he was thrown in jail several times just 10 minutes outside Hasaka towards Tel Tamr, he said.
He had to fight for free, no salary/money, on
...the front lines against Daesh, in Manbij, Raqqa and Deir Ezzor (province).
We talked extensively about everything he experienced in Syria. It was hard to hear everything he had to say. Esp about his times in prison near Hasaka. He said he was in prison the first time cuz he..
...had said he wanted to go back to his mother.
More specific details I will publish elsewhere later.
His friends from the same neighborhood are still in northeast Syria, they too are trying to escape.
Mardin and Urfa aren't far away..

Is it Moshe or Mouche? I wrote Mouche at first because I was afraid to Hebraise the Aramaic...
'The authorities of the Autonomous Administration (Democratic) of North and East Syria AANES, prevented Mr. Gabriel Moshe Kourieh, member of the Assyrian Democratic Organization ADO and director of the Relations from traveling to the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, on 28/8/2021..'
'Turkish Tel Abyad', that is how the vast majority of its inhabitants (Arabs) call the Turkish half of Tel Abyad. I wanted to see it with my own eyes, cuz I wondered if the town was like half Turkish half Arab or majority Arab. It is absolutely the latter. It is an Arab town.
Of course, education, services and so on are Turkish and jn Turkish. But the Arab inhabitants speak Arabic among themselves. They are bilingual. Same goes 4 the town of Harran, roughly between Şanlıurfa and Akçakale. Ak = white, kale = castle/the Turkish translation of Tel Abyad.
What I also learned, the Arabic of Akçakale/Turkish Tel Abyad, Harran and Şanliurfa (mixed population) is like Iraqi Arabic, to my surprise. It started already in the hotel where a waitor said 'aani' (ana, Iraqi way). In Akçakale I heard a lot of -ich instead of -ik: beitich.
A Syrian Kurdish activist: The US knew they were supporting and arming the PKK/a terrorist organization. Why they haven't been supporting/arming the moderate Kurdish forces? Then this escalation with Turkey could have been avoided. Now ordinary ppl fall into poverty cuz they lost
..their homes. And they will never return to the places where they lost their homes, and if white phospherous was used by the Turks, it will contaminate the water, cause cancer also in those places. Ppl will never return, will rest of their life live in poverty.
And update from #Amouda: "YPG-fighters are destroying their tunnel system in town (which is under everywhere in town - seen it)."
