Learned from Sh. Ardhendumauli Kumar Prasad
(@ardhendumauli) yesterday that his late grandfather, Sh. Krishna Kumar Prasad, named all male descendants with names of Bhagavan Shiva and all female descendants with names of Bhagavati Parvati.

Requested to comment: The Rigveda does not say this.

The quote is based on a bad translation (mistranslation) of RV X.95.15 by Griffith “... with women there can be no lasting friendship: hearts of hyenas are the hearts of women.”

This translation is wrong.

The words ‘sālāvṛkāṇāṃ hṛdayāni’ in the mantra are a reference to friendships, not women. As ‘hṛdayāni’ is in neuter gender, it cannot quality women.

Meaning as per Sāyaṇa: “There are no friendships with women, such friendships are like the hearts of hyena/wolf.”

Commentary by Sāyaṇa: “स्त्रैणानि” स्त्रीणां कृतानि “सख्यानि “न वै सन्ति”। न सन्ति खलु। अभावे कारणमाह। “एता” एतानि सख्यानि “सालावृकाणां हृदयानि” तेषां हृदयानि यथा वत्सादीनां विश्वासापन्नानां घातुकानि तद्वत्।

ગુજરાતના મારા બધા મિત્રોને નૂતન વર્ષાભિનંદન.

ગુજરાતમાં આજે જન્મેલા બાળક માટે બહુ ઉપયુક્ત #સુનામ છે ‘વત્સર’.

‘વત્સર’ શબ્દનો એક અર્થ છે “વર્ષ”, અને મહાભારતના વિષ્ણુસહસ્રનામસ્તોત્ર માં વત્સર શ્રીવિષ્ણુનું ૪૭૦મું નામ છે—

“વત્સરો વત્સલો વત્સી રત્નગર્ભો ધનેશ્વરઃ” (૧૩.૧૪૯.૬૩)

જેમાં બધા જીવો અથવા લોકો વસે છે એ અધિકરણ છે ‘વત્સર’ એટલે વિષ્ણુ—“વસન્તિ જીવા લોકા વા અસ્મિન્નિતિ વત્સરો વિષ્ણુઃ”.

એવીજ રીતે જેમાં બધા ઋતુઓ વસે છે એ અધિકરણ છે ‘વત્સર’ એટલે વર્ષ. “વસન્તિ ઋતવઃ અસ્મિન્નિતિ વત્સરો વર્ષઃ”.

गुजरात में आज जन्मे बालक के लिए बहुत उपयुक्त #सुनाम है ‘वत्सर’।
