actual photo of @sussanley just now successfully urging the world heritage committee *not* to list the #GreatBarrierReef as “in danger”.

😞

(our gov’t made more calls to stop recognition of the reef’s perilous state than it did to secure covid vaccines.) #auspol
the committee did recognise:
• the long-term outlook has deteriorated from ‘poor’ to ‘very poor’
• progress to date has been insufficient
• climate change remains the most serious threat

…and…
…australia is required submit a report next february, to be considered at the 45th meeting of the committee in russia this time next year.

hopefully our _next_ minister for the environment will urge the world to save the reef.
here are the countries that supported @sussanley.

Q. what promises did she make to them?
so, @sussanley has successfully ensured that the inevitable recognition of the #GreatBarrierReef’s condition has been delayed until *after* the federal election.

@ScottMorrisonMP thanks you susssan.

🤓 what does japan's new electricity plan (released yesterday) mean for australia?

firstly, summary of new targets…

analysis w/ thanks to brainstrust: @LlewelynHughes, @Tom_Swann, @SStapczynski, @barobertson111, @TimBuckleyIEEFA & @BobBurtonoz

Image
for power sector:
• total renewables set to double over next decade, as they did over the last decade
• LNG to halve, back to levels not seen since ~1993
• coal down 45%, back to 1998 levels
• nuclear to recover to ~70% of pre-fukushima levels
• consumption set to fall by 9%
the new plan is expected to reduce electricity emissions by 46%.

(nb. there are plans for reducing emissions from other sectors of the economy… this is just the electricity sector.)

i absolutely share @juliahbanks vision.

the shortest path to good government in australia is a minority government forced to work with progressive, crossbench.

if you care about our country, please try to get your head around this vision. we don't have long. #auspol
…you _absolutely_ can vote for a minority government.

if there's a progressive independent or minor party candidate in your electorate, put a "1" beside their name.

DYK, there have been only ~30 conscience votes since 1945!

in almost every other vote, the major party members have voted as directed by the party whip.

this is why, for example, #TrentZimmerman and @PeterDutton_MP have 99.99% the same voting record.

🧵22 june marks @hepburnwind's 10th anniversary of generating clean energy!

since the very first kWh sent into the grid ten years ago, gale & gusto, the two turbines of australia's first community-owned wind farm have generated more than 100,000,000 kWh!

here's how it happened:
in 2004 a developer proposed the clarkes hill wind farm, about 30km from #daylesford.

a number of daylesford locals went along to the dean town hall for a "community consultation", excited to hear all about it.

but when they arrived, the atmosphere was hostile, almost violent!
the developer was run out of town & the anti-wind mob — themselves largely from out of town — celebrated a "victory".

the daylesford crew left the meeting devastated that the community's first response was knee-jerk opposition.

on the way home they promised to change the story.

many eyes on reported leak at #taishan nuclear power station, close to hong kong.

doesn't help that french part-owner has warned of an "imminent radiological threat", but the fact that US is monitoring closely & hasn't raised alarm should be of comfort.

edition.cnn.com/2021/06/14/pol…
small leaks do happen, but overwhelming majority result in zero harm.

best to hold off on hot-takes until situation has been fully assessed. hysteria around an incident do more harm than the incident itself.
"advising US authorities" is not in itself cause for concern.

for the technically curious:

🧵nuclear zealots like @Dr_Keefer often claim that wind turbines and solar panels last only 20 years.

…and that nuclear plants are somehow "immortal".

one problem: that's 🐂💩! Image
it’s not unusual for solar panels to come with a 25 year warranty these days.

the manufacturer of my solar panels claims they have a *40* year useful life, and guarantee that at 25 years they’ll still be 92% as productive as they were when brand new.

sunpower.maxeon.com/au/sites/defau… Image
#ontario solar manufacturer @SilfabSolar claims the world's longest performance warranty — at least 82.6% of their original power at the end of their 30th year.

😯 callide unit 4, the 405MW "HELE" coal generator near biloela that shat itself last week, underwent a major $48.5m overhaul just 3.5 years ago.

statements.qld.gov.au/statements/830…
…and if you think i'm exaggerating when i say it shat itself, read this:

afr.com/companies/ener…
👆colleague said "real issue isn’t that it was 300kg, but that it stuck in the roof hard enough to overcome gravity!"

separately, a facey post today claims:

"a pic of the callide turbine… VERY destroyed LP turbine casing in the background… broken piece is part of its shaft."
