Use all your unfair advantages.

(a 🧵)
1/ Capitalism rewards rare and valuable.

Making something that customers value is important, but so is making something rare.

invertedpassion.com/capitalism-rew…
2/ Markets are competitive and initial success usually leads to other companies or new startups trying to copy and replicate such success for themselves.

invertedpassion.com/steal-successf…
3/ The last thing you want is for someone else to come along and capture your entire market for themselves.
4/ It’s true that copying by competitors may or may not happen, and such copying by others may or may not be successful.

But why leave that to chance?
5/ In fact, companies that are copying your business will likely use all their unfair advantages to crush you.

If they have more funding, they can out-market you. If they have better engineers, they can develop a more stable product. If they have a brand name, they will use it.
6/ Forget about fairness.

Business competition is brutal and your competitors will not hesitate to borrow, steal, cheat and lie to defeat you.
7/ In 2017, Instagram used its unfair advantage of a larger user base to copy and launch Snapchat’s most successful feature – stories.

And they were (rightly) unashamed of doing so. Instagram’s head of product Kevin Weil explained their move by saying:
8/ Instagram stories succeed massively and many believe that is what effectively stifled Snapchat’s growth.

So if other businesses use their unfair advantages all the time, you should use them too.
9/ Though it’s easy to believe that something is an advantage when it’s not.

An advantage is unfair only if you have an access to it but your competitors don’t.
10/ Believing that you’re better or more hard-working doesn’t work.

Your competitors are as smart and hard-working as you are.

invertedpassion.com/your-competito…
11/ Exclusive unfair advantage can be because of:

• your unique professional network
• your gut-level understanding of a niche market (that cannot be easily replicated without sufficient time investment by others)
• your focus and decision fo what to do and what not to do
12/

• proprietary technology or

• perhaps an insight that won’t be obvious to others even after launching.
13/ You should introspect and list down all your unfair advantages and then use all of them.

Each unfair advantage matters and all of them add up to providing a significant deterrent to competitors keen on copying what you’ve built.
14/ When you are starting out, you may not have unfair advantages.

If you know how to code, so do many other people.

Lacking an unfair advantage, you can succeed only via good market timing and luck.
15/ As someone with no unfair advantage over others, be ready to fail multiple times to give luck and timing a chance to be in your favor.

invertedpassion.com/dont-be-a-firs…
16/ A word of caution.

For an advantage to be unfair, it has to be both: an advantage and unfair.

Due to our confirmation bias, it’s easy to fall into the trap of confusing non-advantages with advantages and common knowledge as something exclusively known to you.
17/ You must be totally honest about what’s an unfair advantage and what’s not.

It’ll help you to take feedback on this from someone else.
18/ Remember 🧠

the aim of any business is to prevent itself from getting irrelevant by competition while itself trying to make competition irrelevant. That can only happen with creating and using unfair advantages.
19/ That's it!

Just finished this beautiful #book by @MerlinSheldrake on fungi.

Highly recommended!

A short thread on things that struck me from the book.
1/ The first obvious but surprising thing is that fungi is neither animal, nor plant.

For a long time it was clubbed into plants, but evolutionary history suggests that’s it’s a domain of its own.
2/ Though, surprisingly, it’s closer to animals than plants.

I did not know that.

To reduce suffering in the world, you need to first prioritize its causes

I'm trying to come up with a measure for the intensity of suffering for different conditions (starting with depression)

Want to help me with the project? Take this 2 min survey docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAI…

🙏
I'm doing this is because when I wrote my moral code, reducing suffering in the world came out as a clear direction:

Given limited time and money, I need to compare suffering that different conditions cause.

Hence the need for a standardized measure.
The difficulty is in standardizing this across wildly different suffering types and beings who suffer.

There are many happiness surveys, but not enough measures of suffering.

Our “self-identity” doesn’t exist.

(a mini thread)
1/ Let’s take bodies.

Maybe collection of “our” cells define who we’re?

Well, we contain more bacterial cells in our bodies than “our” own cells. And these bacterial cells are essential for survival.
2/ What about DNA? Surely, that describes us.

Mitochondria that lives within each of “our” cells was once another organism that ended up in symbiosis with “our” cells. It contains its own DNA.

Also, about 8% of our DNA came from viruses.

Your competitors are just like you: smart and hard-working.

(a tiny 🧵)
1/ Entrepreneurs have to be confident in their abilities, otherwise, they’d never take the risk of starting a business.

However, this confidence can backfire if it’s adopted as a company strategy.
2/ If you think you’re smarter or more hard-working than your competitors, your competitors are also thinking the same.

Butter v/s Margarine war has an important lesson to teach for the emerging plant-based food industry.

(a mini thread)
1/ The plant-based meat alternatives industry currently is exploding.

Funding is exploding for the sector. (via @GoodFoodInst)
2/ So is sales.

For example, see @BeyondMeat's sales.

Compete on cost or quality. You can’t do both.

(a short 🧵 on this mental model) Image
1/ Proven physical theories are called laws because they dictate how our world operates.

If there were such a law of capitalism, it would probably be the fact that profits attract competitors who try to eliminate it by offering customers either a lower price or a higher quality
2/ This law thus allows for only two types of businesses to exist: cost-focused business or quality-focused business.

Think of a McDonald’s v/s your neighborhood gourmet burger restaurant.

Any business that tries to be both doesn’t work out in the long run.
