By definition whistleblowers reveal information in the public interest. They expose government misconduct, such as information about unconstitutional mass surveillance, torture, the secret drone war, foreign election interference, discrimination, civil and human rights abuses.
U.S. government prosecution and persecution impacts the lives of all whistleblowers. @xychelsea has been severely mistreated during her long pre-trial detention and prison sentence, and her courage and resilience are remarkable.
Others are currently facing direct consequences: @Snowden is still in exile in Russia because the draconian Espionage Act does not allow a public interest defense and prosecutions are shrouded in secrecy.
After 4 years in detention #RealityWinner is in home confinement under strict conditions and will have another 3 years of supervised release after November. See her story in our film UNITED STATES VS. REALITY WINNER and look up her clemency campaign: standwithreality.org.
#DanielHale was under espionage investigation for 7 years and on Tuesday received 3 years and 9 months in prison. I captured his story and whistleblowing about the U.S. drone war in my film NATIONAL BIRD and you can learn more about Daniel here: standwithdanielhale.org.
None of these #whistleblowers will be able to return to a normal unrestricted life without a full presidential pardon by @POTUS@JoeBiden.
If you believe in the 1st Amendment, a #FreePress that acts as a watchdog in a strong and healthy #democracy, and a government that is accountable to the people, you should support whistleblower protection on #NationalWhistleblowerDay.
It is important to note that the protection of #whistleblowers and investigative journalism that relies on truth-tellers should concern everyone, because they make disclosures to protect your civil and #humanrights. Today is National Whistleblower Appreciation Day.

My new film UNITED STATES VS. REALITY WINNER is about #RealityWinner who disclosed one document about Russian election interference to the media and received the longest prison sentence ever imposed on a #whistleblower in federal court: 63 months.
Reality Winner is in prison right now, where she had contracted COVID-19, and is especially vulnerable because of underlying health conditions such as a history of respiratory illnesses, eating disorders, anxiety, and depression. theintercept.com/2018/11/24/rea…
Our independent film team documented the harsh prosecution of #RealityWinner in Augusta, GA, along with journalists @kgosztola & @tkbarnes. Reality and her family faced an overwhelming adversary, the US Government that wanted to make an example out of then 25-year-old Reality.
