First things first, not just Lambu but Sameer Dar was also killed in this operation that lasted 271 days - test of patience, grit and determination

So what helped Army tracked this terrorist was -
1) Weather
2) Lust for phone sex
3) Dachigam

To understand this operation it is important to understand this map- and the importance of Dachigam in this operation- red is where he was killed and yellow are his potential locations over many days before he was killed

Dachigam forest has an interesting geography-
- towards NW is Bandipore & Gurez as also Neelam valley
- North is Sonmarg, Leh, Kargil
- East is Pahalgam
- South is Pulwama
- West is Shrinagar and further west is Sopore

Owing to this geography, anyone who infiltrates into Kashmir from Neelam valley follow two trajectories
1) Locals head to their respective districts
2) while commanders and foreigners head to Dachigam being a strategically located for managing entire operations

Incidentally before these terrorists, Dachigam was famous for its Indira Hut- popular amongst Congressis - even Rajiv Gandhi and Chidambaram used to stay here for recuperation- interesting …. Huh…..

If you check weather of past few days, that helped as well. Firstly due to incessant rains, informers and dogs were all indoors so Lambu didn’t get any tip off to escape and merge into thickly populated Srinagar- main modus operandi of terrorists over past several years
