The Greens today will move for an independent inquiry into Christian Porter’s fitness to be a Minister. 1/9 #auspol#ChristianPorter
For two months now I have been fighting to progress my bill that would set up an independent inquiry into Christian Porter’s fitness to be a Minister and uphold the parliamentary standards that the PM is meant to apply. 2/9 #auspol#ChristianPorter
At every turn I have been blocked by the government and their One Nation lackeys. Today I will again seek to progress the bill by referring it to Senate committee for inquiry, as is the norm for private members bills. 3/9 #auspol#ChristianPorter
It’s been five months since the allegations against Mr Porter came to light. Five months of dodging scrutiny. Five months of excuses. Five months of ignoring Australian women, who continue to demand action. 4/9 #auspol#ChristianPorter
The PM’s willingness to keep an alleged rapist in his Cabinet - without any attempt to determine the truth of the allegations - reeks of male privilege, and fundamentally misjudges the anger and the injustice that women feel... 5/9 #auspol#ChristianPorter
... about the continued rates of sexual assault, harassment, discrimination, and just plain sexism. It says to women everywhere that their experiences are not valid, are not important, and are not to be believed. 6/9 #auspol#ChristianPorter
The Greens’ bill will establish an independent, arms-length process to determine whether Christian Porter is a fit and proper person to hold a Ministerial position. With no other legal avenues left it is the only way these allegations can be tested. 7/9 #auspol#ChristianPorter
There is no justice for women survivors anywhere while untested rape allegations are allowed to persist against a Commonwealth Minister of the Crown. 8/9 #auspol#ChristianPorter
The referral of my bill, the Ministerial Suitability Commission of Inquiry Bill 2021, will be debated and then voted on in the Senate at approximately 5:30pm today. 9/9 #auspol#ChristianPorter

More Senate bastardry from big parties - gave late verbal notice that 2moro they’ll gang up to PERMANENTLY REMOVE the rights of Senators to move & get a vote on issues in ‘motions’. This is deeply anti-democratic; means LibLab get to dictate issues that can be voted on! #auspol
The LibLab proposal is to replace actual votes with 2min statements. Problem is, votes are where the accountability is! Big parties want to weasel out of telling the public what their position is on issues that might be tricky/politically inconvenient. But ppl deserve to know!
Senate motions are not just an important accountability mechanism to hold parties to account (eg do you support new coal mines or not? What about 2030 targets?), they have also sparked important policy reforms. The banking royal commission: started because of a Greens motion.
Mr Porter abandoning his defamation action against @Milliganreports and the ABC leaves serious allegations against him unexamined. 1/8 #auspol#ChristianPorter
The Australian people cannot have confidence in this government while a man with a rape allegation hanging over his head remains a Cabinet Minister. 2/8 #auspol#ChristianPorter
In March, I presented a petition from the March 4 Justice rally to parliament. More than 90,000 people were calling for, among other things, an independent investigation into Mr Porter’s fitness as a Minister. 3/8 #auspol#ChristianPorter
Big day in #estimates today. I found out from AFP Commissioner Reece Kershaw that the Brittany Higgins investigation had received 32 referrals of information to their investigation, and the AFP are actively pursuing six matters. 1/7
During my questioning of the Secretary of the Department of Parliamentary Services we learned that there had been no changes to parliamentary security protocols since Brittany Higgins’ allegations came to light. 2/7 #estimates
We also learned that a review of security procedures and policies - some of which haven’t been updated since the early 2000s! - had been started in early 2018 but had not yet recommended any changes to security guard duty of care. 3/7 #estimates
Greens women will walk out of the senate on Monday as part of the national #MarchForJustice protests, which are calling for gender equality and an end to gendered violence. We'll join demonstrators at the Canberra rally on the lawns outside Parliament House. @womensmarchaus 1/4
These last few weeks have made every woman in the country angry, sad and exhausted. The government’s reaction to allegations of sexual assault in Parliament House and allegations of rape against the Attorney-General have left us disgusted and fed up. #March4Justice 2/4
The PM has made it clear that he doesn’t believe women, will only think about the impact on us when his wife reminds him of it, and will go to any length to protect his mates. #March4Justice 3/4
The consent education program trumpeted by Education Minister Alan Tudge this morning is a weak-kneed response to the roar of fury from women and girls everywhere. 1/8
It wasn't new. It was a re-announcement of a $2.8 million online program the Morrison government unveiled in 2019. A program that has so far, in two years, apparently failed to deliver any education materials for schools. 2/8
In the face of a crisis of misogyny and sexual violence, this government has served up a reheated program from two years ago that was underwhelming at the time and seems utterly inadequate now. 3/8
The Greens are moving to suspend standing orders to discuss why the PM said he’d be participating the the Global Climate Summit, when diplomatic sources revealed Australia wasn’t invited to participate because of our dismal inaction on climate change.
What we need to hear from the Govt is whether the PM misled parliament in response to questions about whether we were invited to the global climate summit or not?
We understand that correspondence has been sent to the PM saying we are not invited to the global climate summit. We call for the Minister representing the PM to attend the Senate at 2pm today to explain whether we have been invited, and table any correspondence.
