An epidemiologist from Johns Hopkins walks into a maskless party with 14 fully vaccinated friends… 11 of 14 got breakthrough #COVID19 —so yes, even some epidemiologists had severely underestimated #DeltaVariant. @CDCgov definitely made a grave mistake. baltimoresun.com/opinion/op-ed/…
2) “It was bad luck for my friend, but surely she wasn’t that contagious. Surely all of us were immune. I’d been sitting across the room from her. I figured I’d stay home and isolate from my family for a few days, and that would be that. And even that seemed like overkill…
3) “The official CDC guideline stated that, since I was fully vaccinated, I didn’t need to do anything different unless I started developing symptoms…” (seriously what the hell @CDCgov)
4) “I’m an epidemiologist at a major medical research university, which has a dedicated COVID exposure hotline. I called it, and workers said I didn’t need to do anything.” 🤦🏻♂️ cmon CDC, this is on you.
5) “Grave mistake” - this @JohnsHopkins trained epidemiologist you know has been arguing against the CDC since they announced their mask relaxation in May. google.com/amp/s/www.cbsn…
6) I doubled down that @CDCgov made a grave mistake.
7) although lower risk of infection if vaccinated, it’s clear the first 6 days of a breakthrough infection is still tricky because of similar viral load. Luckily viral load drops fast if vaccinated. But that first critical 6 days!!!
8) Mild is not always so mild—“I can tell you that even a “mild” case of COVID-19 is pretty miserable. I’ve had fever, chills and muscle aches, and I’ve been weak enough that I can barely get out of bed. I don’t wish this on anybody.”

I cry for the people of Lebanon—so much hunger, no electricity. “The supply of medicines has also become unreliable. At a pharmacy, a line stretched, where anxious shoppers sought medicines that are now scarce, such as pain killers & blood pressure meds.” nytimes.com/2021/08/04/wor…
2) “In a country once billed as the Switzerland of the Middle East, the banks are largely insolvent. Education has suffered as teachers and professors seek better opportunities abroad. And health care has deteriorated as reduced salaries caused an exodus of doctors and nurses.”
3) “The emergency ward at the American University of Beirut Medical Center, among the country’s best, has gone to seven physicians, from 12, and lost more than half of its 65 nurses since July 2020, said Eveline Hitti, the head of the department.
BREAKING—Florida is caught underreporting #COVID19 deaths by 3.5x. Instead of the reported “175” deaths, the actual net increase in #COVID deaths is 616 in one week. Fuzzy math @GovRonDeSantis?
2) So what is going on? 175 is the *currently known & reported* deaths for the past week, yes, but death reporting in Florida is NOTORIOUSLY SLOW—most deaths reports weeks or months late. 616 is the backfill report of *newly discovered deaths*… same thing in May… let’s dive in—
3) so where are the extra deaths from? They are the notoriously slow backfilling of new death reports of deaths that occurred in prior weeks. But this also means that the “40” deaths below are completely meaningless if most actual deaths are discovered and reported later.
Coronavirus booster shots for the immunocompromised expected to be authorized soon— Biden administration is fast-tracking efforts to protect some of the most vulnerable Americans from the highly contagious #DeltaVariant. Approval expected in days or weeks. washingtonpost.com/health/2021/08…
2) “The stepped-up activity reflects increased urgency by the Biden administration to shield some of the nation’s most vulnerable adults as #COVID19 cases rise sharply. That has increased as some countries take steps to provide shots to people who are immunocompromised or older
3) “In the next week or two, the Food and Drug Administration is expected to review data from the Centers for the Disease Control and Prevention supporting the use of additional vaccine doses for the immunocompromised.
📈500% hospitalizations surge—one Houston Texas hospital sees 6x rise (500% increase) in just 3 weeks. ➡️Most age<50 with zero underlying condition! 95% ARE NOT VACCINATED! Doctor: we are “Fighting a war against #COVID19 & human stupidity”.
3) Many doctors in Florida like @SolNataMD now reporting patients dying much much quicker with #DeltaVariant— no longer weeks in ICU— but dying in just days and sometimes just hours. Delta is a 2.0 pandemic virus. It’s not Wuhan 1.0 anymore.
The @CDCgov needs to recognize risks much earlier and faster. The CDC was 6 weeks behind the @WHO in declaring #DeltaVariant a “VARIANT OF CONCERN”. That was an atrociously late declaration. I love the CDC but they need to communicate faster and clearer. straitstimes.com/world/united-s…
2) As for the masking needed for vaccinated, it was clear we needed to mask because of breakthroughs in Singapore contact tracing data. Yet CDC memo had to be leaked to become public.
