7 ways to raise well rounded, healthy kids that you've never thought about.

I moved from the U.S. to Guatemala 9 years ago.

It’s easy to see how toxic it is for parents to fill their kids lives with endless sports & activities.

A petri dish of anxiety.

// THREAD //
Teach them not to be afraid of failure.

Ask them every day, “What did you fail at today?”

If they failed, they’re growing.

Reframe failure.

“Imagine if schools viewed mistakes the way programmers do: Not as signs of failure, but as “bugs” that can be fixed.” @anafabrega11
Help them to fall in love with reading.

• They have a significantly higher chance of loving to read, if you read.
• 1 hour of reading for 30 min. of tv or video games.

“Reading is to the mind, what exercise is to the body.” – Richard Steele
Require them to be on a team or club.

It doesn’t have to be sports.

• Debate team
• Robotics team
• Book reading club

“True teams are made when you put aside individual wants for the collective good.” - @chiney
Teach them the value of good sleep habits.

Kids under 12 years old often need 10-12 hours of sleep.

Teens need 8-10 hours of sleep.

MOST KIDS don't get nearly enough.

“It’s never too early to teach your kids about the circadian rhythm” @OneGSisneros
Teach your kids the value of travel.

One road trip every 3 months will give so much depth to their personality.

• Travel within your state.
• Travel within your country.
• Travel to a 3rd World Country.

"Collect moments, not things."
Teach your kids to help others.

Growing up in Colorado, my dad shoveled snow off roofs on weekends to make extra money. I helped.

There were always two widows whose roofs we shoveled for free.

“How do we change the world? One random act of kindness at a time.” - M. Freeman
Be their biggest supporter.

Encourage their effort, not just their achievements.

Let them fall. Help them up.
Let them fall. Help them up.
Let them fall. Watch them get up.

Then...watch them grow.

“Don’t be afraid of failure. Be afraid of petty success.” – Maude Adams
That's it!

Our kids grow up more well rounded and healthy when we're intentional.

Time + Consistency = Love

At what age are you at "The Prime of Your Life?" @FI_Squirrel

That's a good question.

I have the answer.

(short thread 👇🏽) Image
When you're 25 it's 25.
When you're 35 it's 35.
When you're 55 it's 55.

If you have the right mindset, you're living in the prime of your life.

If you don't, your prime will always be behind or ahead of you.
Being self aware is an underrated and underused superpower.

When we sold everything to move to Guatemala,

A country that has 100 murders a week,

Our friends thought we were crazy & our family threatened to cut us off .

// tiny thread //
10 years later, some of them are still shaking their head, waiting for us to fold up and come back home.

We're still here, living in one of the most beautiful corners of the planet, serving the poor.

Thriving.
What are you putting off?
What are you doing that people would call you crazy for?

What do you really have to lose?

We sold everything we owned,
Except for 2 suitcases each,
And moved to a 3rd World Country.

Here are 5 things we did in our quest to find our life’s purpose.

First of all, there are no rules.

“Go to school,
get good grades,
get into a good college,
graduate and get a good job.”

IT'S NOT A RULE.
As a matter of fact, in many cases,

It’s a lie.

If you’re stuck in a job, you hate going to every day,
If you’re stuck in a life, you don’t recognize anymore,

Maybe you’re not fulfilling your higher purpose.

I’ve made a TON of mistakes.

If I could,
I’d send these 21 words of advice,
to my 21-year-old self.

Reward toxic people in your life,

With distance.
The government won’t save you.

There aren’t enough stimulus checks to dig you out of your bad habits.

How we got out $45,000 of debt in one year.

It wasn’t sexy.

(thread)
You have to want it.

We were tired of not having enough money at the end of the month. Exhausted really.

We owned two small businesses and we were grossing $90,000 a year!

If we lost even one of our clients, we would have been in real trouble.
Have a strong driving reason to get out of debt this way.

• we wanted to give more
• we wanted to make the world a better place

We couldn't do that in debt.

I completed my 55th trip around the sun a few days ago.

No regrets. None.

This is how I got to a place

full of adventure,
full of life,
full of love
and filled with gratitude

With all my heart, I wish the same for you.

When you tell someone you love them,

Mean it.
Learn to be alone.

Alone doesn’t equal lonely.
