Armed with my EU Digital COVID Pass, I am going on holiday on 7 August and will not be on Twitter
So here is a *complete* explainer thread about COVID passes and QR codes for travel, especially for those travelling from ๐ฌ๐ง to ๐ช๐บ๐จ๐ญ๐ณ๐ด๐ฎ๐ธ๐ฑ๐ฎ, before I go!
๐งต
๐ช๐บ Digital COVID Pass scheme (that works in ๐ช๐บ๐จ๐ญ๐ณ๐ด๐ฎ๐ธ๐ฑ๐ฎ) is a QR code based system to demonstrate your vaccination status
The code looks like this and - importantly - it does not matter HOW you show it. On paper, on a phone, laser etched into wood - it's your call!
For those ๐๐ in ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ท๓ ฌ๓ ณ๓ ฟ and Northern Ireland there is a similar system (๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ has not been launched yet, will be similar)
A QR code demonstrates your vaccination status - example below
But ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ท๓ ฌ๓ ณ๓ ฟ and Northern Ireland, and ๐ช๐บ systems are not fully compatible
But there ARE workarounds
So what do you need to do before you travel?
๐จ IMPORTANT ๐จ
Check the travel advice for the country you intend to visit. Due to the prevalence of Delta in ๐ฌ๐ง some places are still closed to people travelling from there!
โ ๏ธ BEWARE โ ๏ธ
The documentation you need to get INTO a country, might well be more broadly defined than what you need to do anything once you are inside that country - to go to a library, restaurant or museum for example, where you need to demonstrate you have ๐๐
That is where the ๐ช๐บ Digital COVID Pass is so important - the code issued to someone ๐๐ in ๐ฎ๐น can be used to get them into a museum in ๐ช๐ช, and someone ๐๐ in ๐ต๐น can eat in a restaurant in ๐ซ๐ท without problems
But ๐ฌ๐ง isn't in it...
To the workarounds...
๐๐ in ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ: get the NHS COVID Pass letter, or do it via NHS App nhs.uk/conditions/corโฆ
๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ issues letters w/o QR codes currently, QR forthcoming
Just as with the ๐ช๐บ Digital COVID Pass, it does not matter what medium you choose - the important point is that you have the QR code having followed the relevant procedure
It can then be on paper, on a phone screen etc.
Then how you USE this depends on the country you are travelling to!
If you are travelling to ๐ฎ๐ช and are ๐๐ in ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ท๓ ฌ๓ ณ๓ ฟ or Northern Ireland then
๐ฅ EVERYTHING WORKS ๐ฅ
๐ฎ๐ช Digital Covid Cert Checker can read your NHS code
For some reason not yet understood, Northern Ireland QR codes do NOT work with TousAntiCovid Verif at the time of writing - but I expect that to be added soon
Likewise Scottish QR codes, whenever they are issued, ought to likewise be added to the verifiers in ๐ซ๐ท and ๐ฎ๐ช
โBUT WHAT ABOUT APPSโ
Just as there is a NHS App to show your QR code, so ๐ฎ๐ช & ๐ซ๐ท have their own apps for their citizens to demonstrate their vaccine status
You CAN put your NHS QR code into ๐ฎ๐ช's Covid Tracker Ireland App or ๐ซ๐ท's TousAntiCovid App *but you don't have to*
But what about anywhere ELSE in ๐ช๐บ, or๐จ๐ญ๐ณ๐ด๐ฎ๐ธ๐ฑ๐ฎ?
Those countries' verifier apps (think the app a museum would use to scan your QR code) currently show NHS QR codes as INVALID โ when scanning them
There is plenty of misinformation around this, because of confusion about what functions each app has
There are citizen apps (like TousAntiCovid ๐ซ๐ท or Corona-Warn-App ๐ฉ๐ช) and verifier apps (like TousAntiCovid Verif ๐ซ๐ท or CovPassCheck ๐ฉ๐ช) - ONLY the latter are relevant here!
So for example in ๐ฉ๐ช if you scan a NHS QR code with Corona-Warn-App (the citizen app) it shows as valid... but if you try it in CovPassCheck it shows as invalid. And ONLY THE LATTER matters
And yes, some of the app design here is awful. But that's not my fault. Live with it
Does the fact that this works in ๐ซ๐ท help you in - say - ๐ฉ๐ช?
NO
Because a German venue will use the German verifier app CovPassCheck, not the French verifier TousAntiCovid Verif
NHS QR fails in CovPassCheck. So no Bratwurst ๐ญ
What do you do instead?
Some countries have gone further towards vaccine passports than others - ๐ซ๐ท most radical, ๐ฎ๐น & ๐ฉ๐ช likely getting tighter. But in some places you might not need this at all
Also some venues *might* accept NHS paperwork even if the QR code shows INVALID
Medium term some other countries might unilaterally adopt the same route as ๐ฎ๐ช & ๐ซ๐ท have and add NHS QR verification to their verifiers - but this is all going to be rather piecemeal I fear, and some places may never do it
For 3 countries - ๐ฉ๐ช๐ฎ๐น๐ณ๐ฑ - there are further partial work-arounds
For ๐ฉ๐ช try presenting your NHS vaccination documentation at a pharmacy, and they *can* issue a EU Digital COVID Pass for you (which then works ๐ช๐บ-wide ๐) but some pharmacies refuse to do it. Keep trying!
For residents of ๐ณ๐ฑ nevertheless vaccinated outside ๐ช๐บ there is a system in place:
OK, we now have clarity about the issues with NHS ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ท๓ ฌ๓ ณ๓ ฟ QR codes again (incorrectly) showing INVALID โ in ๐ซ๐ท TAC Verif app this morning
On iOS upgrading TAC Verif to 1.7.0 (latest version) fixed it - showed VALID โ again
On ๐ค v 1.6.2 (latest version) it worked all along
But there *is* a separate issue with TAC Verif on ๐ค... that's connected to language!
I've now checked this with @Etienne_Sheff and we can confirm that *even if* the phone language is not set to English, ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ท๓ ฌ๓ ณ๓ ฟ NHS QR codes *still* show as VALID - as they should
In other words: the problem @X_Cli_Public identifies DOES NOT impact the ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ท๓ ฌ๓ ณ๓ ฟ NHS QR code verification!
It's north along the coast from Barcelona on the Rodalies R1 commuter line (bottom right)
Integration of suburban rail into Spanish timetables is awful, but this site has the timetables for the Rodalies lines in the Barcelona area rodalies.gencat.cat/en/horaris/
Latest departure: 22:54, arrives Canet de Mar at 23:56
After discussions with @ruthpadel and @stevegreen39 I've run the rule over the COVID apps / vaccine certification situation for those vaccinated in ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ท๓ ฌ๓ ณ๓ ฟ and Northern Ireland travelling to ๐ฎ๐น
Quick ๐งต
Italian residents can prove their vaccination status using the IO app
The prerequisites: letter from NHS ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ท๓ ฌ๓ ณ๓ ฟ or Northern Ireland confirming vaccination status, with QR code on it, and Corona-Warn-App latest version (2.6.1 on iOS)
Up until today's new Corona-Warn-App update, if you imported a NHS QR code into the app it just displayed it, and did not do any validation
For that you needed the *separate* CovPassCheck App (which is only in ๐ฉ๐ช app stores - bit of a pain, but I diverge)
