Right

Armed with my EU Digital COVID Pass, I am going on holiday on 7 August and will not be on Twitter

So here is a *complete* explainer thread about COVID passes and QR codes for travel, especially for those travelling from ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง to ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ญ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ด๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฑ๐Ÿ‡ฎ, before I go!

๐Ÿงต
๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ Digital COVID Pass scheme (that works in ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ญ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ด๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฑ๐Ÿ‡ฎ) is a QR code based system to demonstrate your vaccination status

The code looks like this and - importantly - it does not matter HOW you show it. On paper, on a phone, laser etched into wood - it's your call!
For those ๐Ÿ’‰๐Ÿ’‰ in ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ท๓ ฌ๓ ณ๓ ฟ and Northern Ireland there is a similar system (๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ has not been launched yet, will be similar)

A QR code demonstrates your vaccination status - example below

But ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ท๓ ฌ๓ ณ๓ ฟ and Northern Ireland, and ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ systems are not fully compatible

But there ARE workarounds
So what do you need to do before you travel?

๐Ÿšจ IMPORTANT ๐Ÿšจ
Check the travel advice for the country you intend to visit. Due to the prevalence of Delta in ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง some places are still closed to people travelling from there!
โš ๏ธ BEWARE โš ๏ธ
The documentation you need to get INTO a country, might well be more broadly defined than what you need to do anything once you are inside that country - to go to a library, restaurant or museum for example, where you need to demonstrate you have ๐Ÿ’‰๐Ÿ’‰
That is where the ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ Digital COVID Pass is so important - the code issued to someone ๐Ÿ’‰๐Ÿ’‰ in ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น can be used to get them into a museum in ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ช, and someone ๐Ÿ’‰๐Ÿ’‰ in ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡น can eat in a restaurant in ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท without problems

But ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง isn't in it...
To the workarounds...

๐Ÿ’‰๐Ÿ’‰ in ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ: get the NHS COVID Pass letter, or do it via NHS App
nhs.uk/conditions/corโ€ฆ

๐Ÿ’‰๐Ÿ’‰ in ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ท๓ ฌ๓ ณ๓ ฟ: follow this
gov.wales/get-nhs-covid-โ€ฆ

๐Ÿ’‰๐Ÿ’‰ in Northern Ireland: guidance
nidirect.gov.uk/services/coronโ€ฆ

๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ issues letters w/o QR codes currently, QR forthcoming
Just as with the ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ Digital COVID Pass, it does not matter what medium you choose - the important point is that you have the QR code having followed the relevant procedure

It can then be on paper, on a phone screen etc.
Then how you USE this depends on the country you are travelling to!

If you are travelling to ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช and are ๐Ÿ’‰๐Ÿ’‰ in ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ท๓ ฌ๓ ณ๓ ฟ or Northern Ireland then

๐Ÿฅ EVERYTHING WORKS ๐Ÿฅ

๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช Digital Covid Cert Checker can read your NHS code

You can try it here
app.digitalcovidcertchecker.gov.ie
If you are travelling to ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท and are ๐Ÿ’‰๐Ÿ’‰ in ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ or ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ท๓ ฌ๓ ณ๓ ฟ then

๐Ÿฅ EVERYTHING WORKS ๐Ÿฅ

๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท verifier app can read the QR code

You need a mobile app to test this - it's called TousAntiCovid Verif
iOS apps.apple.com/fr/app/tousantโ€ฆ
Android play.google.com/store/apps/detโ€ฆ
For some reason not yet understood, Northern Ireland QR codes do NOT work with TousAntiCovid Verif at the time of writing - but I expect that to be added soon

Likewise Scottish QR codes, whenever they are issued, ought to likewise be added to the verifiers in ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท and ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช
โ“BUT WHAT ABOUT APPSโ“

Just as there is a NHS App to show your QR code, so ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช & ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท have their own apps for their citizens to demonstrate their vaccine status

You CAN put your NHS QR code into ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช's Covid Tracker Ireland App or ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท's TousAntiCovid App *but you don't have to*
But what about anywhere ELSE in ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ, or๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ญ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ด๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฑ๐Ÿ‡ฎ?

Those countries' verifier apps (think the app a museum would use to scan your QR code) currently show NHS QR codes as INVALID โŒ when scanning them

A full list of European verifier apps is here:
docs.google.com/spreadsheets/dโ€ฆ
There is plenty of misinformation around this, because of confusion about what functions each app has

There are citizen apps (like TousAntiCovid ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท or Corona-Warn-App ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช) and verifier apps (like TousAntiCovid Verif ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท or CovPassCheck ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช) - ONLY the latter are relevant here!
So for example in ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช if you scan a NHS QR code with Corona-Warn-App (the citizen app) it shows as valid... but if you try it in CovPassCheck it shows as invalid. And ONLY THE LATTER matters

And yes, some of the app design here is awful. But that's not my fault. Live with it
Does the fact that this works in ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท help you in - say - ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช?

NO

Because a German venue will use the German verifier app CovPassCheck, not the French verifier TousAntiCovid Verif

NHS QR fails in CovPassCheck. So no Bratwurst ๐ŸŒญ
What do you do instead?

Some countries have gone further towards vaccine passports than others - ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท most radical, ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น & ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช likely getting tighter. But in some places you might not need this at all

Also some venues *might* accept NHS paperwork even if the QR code shows INVALID
Medium term some other countries might unilaterally adopt the same route as ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช & ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท have and add NHS QR verification to their verifiers - but this is all going to be rather piecemeal I fear, and some places may never do it
For 3 countries - ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฑ - there are further partial work-arounds

For ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช try presenting your NHS vaccination documentation at a pharmacy, and they *can* issue a EU Digital COVID Pass for you (which then works ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ-wide ๐ŸŽ‰) but some pharmacies refuse to do it. Keep trying!
For residents of ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฑ nevertheless vaccinated outside ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ there is a system in place:

A system is in the works for ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น where travellers can register at a health practice, but I don't have any detail:
To conclude: all of this is up to date on Friday 6 August. The detail for individual countries might change, but the principles here will not

This is going to remain a mess BECAUSE OF BREXIT

If ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง just joined ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ Digital COVID Pass no-one would have this mess
And *if in doubt, ask*

Detail of this thread has been compiled thanks to hours of work of - among others - @parispagesblog @Thomas06901916 @thatjohn @dolmenman1 @Etienne_Sheff - I owe all of them huge thanks

We're all in this together. Let's help each other out together!

OK, we now have clarity about the issues with NHS ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ท๓ ฌ๓ ณ๓ ฟ QR codes again (incorrectly) showing INVALID โŒ in ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท TAC Verif app this morning

On iOS upgrading TAC Verif to 1.7.0 (latest version) fixed it - showed VALID โœ… again

On ๐Ÿค– v 1.6.2 (latest version) it worked all along
But there *is* a separate issue with TAC Verif on ๐Ÿค–... that's connected to language!

@cormacflynn sent me - INVALID codes being shown as VALID if the Android phone language is set to English! ๐Ÿคฏ

More detail about the issue: broken-by-design.fr/posts/tacv-vulโ€ฆ
I've now checked this with @Etienne_Sheff and we can confirm that *even if* the phone language is not set to English, ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ท๓ ฌ๓ ณ๓ ฟ NHS QR codes *still* show as VALID - as they should

In other words: the problem @X_Cli_Public identifies DOES NOT impact the ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ท๓ ฌ๓ ณ๓ ฟ NHS QR code verification!

A question for the rail nerds @vorortanleiter @Lenny_du_Nord @TrainTracksEU... and sorry, it's about Poland, the country whose rail systems I never understand

I am vaguely planning a trip to Krakรณw, end of September

DB gives me this - can book a ticket for a seat, not for a bed
International Bahn gives me this, if I click "Preis ermitteln", and ร–BB can't give me a price *either*
If I then go day by day until ร–BB *can* give me a price for the EuroNight, the first that works is... 10 September

Which is 5 weeks from now

A pretty odd time horizon if ever I saw one!

OK, so the challenge is Kรถln - Canet de Mar by train

Here's how to do it - a ๐Ÿงต

(sorry Rรผdiger - alles ist auf englisch - hoffentlich OK, ist meine Muttersprache, und ich erreiche mehr Leute!)
First, let's start at the end.

Where is Canet de Mar?

It's north along the coast from Barcelona on the Rodalies R1 commuter line (bottom right) Image
Integration of suburban rail into Spanish timetables is awful, but this site has the timetables for the Rodalies lines in the Barcelona area
rodalies.gencat.cat/en/horaris/

Latest departure: 22:54, arrives Canet de Mar at 23:56

After discussions with @ruthpadel and @stevegreen39 I've run the rule over the COVID apps / vaccine certification situation for those vaccinated in ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ท๓ ฌ๓ ณ๓ ฟ and Northern Ireland travelling to ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น

Quick ๐Ÿงต
Italian residents can prove their vaccination status using the IO app

iOS apps.apple.com/it/app/io/id15โ€ฆ
๐Ÿค– play.google.com/store/apps/detโ€ฆ

But you need a SPID or CIE number to use it, and non-residents do not have that... Image
What about Italy's verifier app - that's the app a restaurant or museum will use to let you enter (or not) from 9 August

That's VerificaC19

iOS apps.apple.com/us/app/verificโ€ฆ

Yay!

Let's all ๐ŸŽ‰ that we've spent โ‚ฌ140m renovating the Karawanken tunnel ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡น ๐Ÿ›ค ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฎ...

... but then run just 5 passenger trains through it each way each day ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ (and 1 of those is seasonal)

railwaygazette.com/infrastructureโ€ฆ
Villach - Rosenbach on the Austrian side has a Taktfahrplan (trains pretty much every hour)
It's a little messier on the Slovenian side, but there's pretty much a train every hour Jesenice-Ljubljana as well

As if this was not all messed up already, ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช Corona-Warn-App v 2.6.1 has messed this up even more

For those vaccinated in ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ท๓ ฌ๓ ณ๓ ฟ and Northern Ireland travelling to ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช read ๐Ÿงต

If going anywhere else, follow the original thread ๐Ÿ‘‡
This comes thanks to a discussion with @legumjus
@i_x_s, and a tweet from @hodadr

The prerequisites: letter from NHS ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ท๓ ฌ๓ ณ๓ ฟ or Northern Ireland confirming vaccination status, with QR code on it, and Corona-Warn-App latest version (2.6.1 on iOS)
Up until today's new Corona-Warn-App update, if you imported a NHS QR code into the app it just displayed it, and did not do any validation

For that you needed the *separate* CovPassCheck App (which is only in ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช app stores - bit of a pain, but I diverge)
